Jupiter Ascending: Review

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), born under the starry sky, with the signs predicting she was destined for great things. While going about her mundane life, barely making ends meet, she spots Caine (Channing Tatum) an ex-military hunter, genetically engineered, as he arrives on Earth. He is there to track her down, and Jupiter is thrown into the midst of an interstellar, family feud.

Jupiter Ascending is a mix of science fiction, a story of live, and plain family drama. The effects are sure to astound, and the magnificently designed sets are to be marvelled at, yet there is something lacking. One feels more like you’re there observing the characters being taken along on a ride, than actually being swept up and taking along with them.

The film is bound to appeal to sci-fi and fantasy fans, but will likely lose some audiences along the way, as it labours along. It definitely provides for great escapism, but misses that wow-factor that would have made it so much more enjoyable.

Jupiter Ascending opens 6 February 2015 in South African cinemas.
