The Walk (Imax 3D): Review

Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), high-wire artist, is determined to walk between the north and south towers of the World Trade Center. This attempt was made in 1974, when the buildings were not yet fully completed.

The Walk chronicles these actual events, following Philippe’s first foray into the wire, and his growth over the years, both as a walker, and as a person, as he learns the skills needed to walk the wire and as a performer and person.

One of the aspects that remain with the viewer, after the credits roll, is the incredibly impressive cinematography, helped along by some incredible effects, being even more impressive with the fact that you’re not quite sure if you’re looking at an effect, a set, or something shot on location.

While this is an incredibly enjoyable film, with stunning visuals, and an engrossing story, at times the acting and accents do feel slightly flat. This is being very nit-picky, but with all the positive, there does need to be something wrong.

The Walk is based on a true story, and this does feel a bit like a fairytale, as Philippe has his many encounters, his struggles both with not just the physicality of walking the high wire, but as he needs to face his own demons, and overcome those.

While The Walk will be released in 2D and 3D commercial cinemas, the visuals are truly done justice on a the big Imax screen, especially in 3D.

A totally engrossing, enjoyable, and delightful film, The Walk opens in South Africa 9 October 2015 in Imax and 18 October 2015 in 2D and 3D commercial.
