The Little Prince Beats Hunger Games

The big budget animation film, The Little Prince helmed by Mark Osborne, the Academy Award® nominated director of Kung Fu Panda, reigned supreme at the Japanese box office, rising to the Number One position this past weekend, ousting Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2 from the Top 10. After opening in third position in its first week of release, The Little Prince sped to the Number One spot, earning an incredible US$2.6 million with over 250 000 attendances. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year, followed by a wide cinema release in France in July, where it was a box office hit, earning more than US$67 million.

Based on the classic children’s book of the same title, the animation adaptation of The Little Prince features a star studded voice cast which included Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, James Franco, Benicio Del Toro, Ricky Gervais, Marion Cotillard, Paul Giamatti and Albert Brooks.

At the heart of the film is The Little Girl, who’s being prepared by her mother for the very grown-up world in which they live – only to be interrupted by her eccentric, kind-hearted neighbour, The Aviator who introduces his new friend to an extraordinary world where anything is possible. A world that he himself was initiated into long ago by The Little Prince. It’s here that The Little Girl’s magical and emotional journey into her own imagination – and into the universe of The Little Prince – begins, and it is where The Little Girl rediscovers her childhood and learns that ultimately, it is human connections that matter most, and that what is truly important can only be seen with the heart.

The Little Prince will be enchanting South African audiences when it opens nationally on Friday, 11 December, providing a heart-warming holiday treat for local audiences. The film will be released in South Africa three months ahead of the United States where Paramount Pictures will release the film in March 2016.

Sanjeev Singh, Videovision Entertainment’s Director of Acquisition and Distribution said, “The fascinating story of The Little Prince has been captivating people around the world since the book was first published seventy years ago. Now the fans of the book, both old and young, have the opportunity to watch the animated film which they will find equally fascinating. The Little Prince is the perfect film for the December holidays.”

The Little Prince is a Videovision Entertainment release through United International Pictures (South Africa).
