Everly (DVD): Review

The Film

Everly (Salma Hayek), a prostitute working for criminal overlord Taiko (Kiroyuki Watanabe) . She has been attacked in her apartment by Taiko’s enforcers after he finds that she has been working with the police to bring down his organisation.

While Taiko would have expected his men to easily be rid of Everly, things seem a little more difficult. This results in him sending wave after wave of killers to rid himself of this troublesome woman, in what is tantamount to a sadistic game as the numerous hired killers are thwarted by Everly’s sheer will to survive, and extract herself from the her current lifestyle.

Everly is an action thriller, of the most adrenaline rush inducing sense. It is near non-stop action, with the fights and shootouts choreographed in a violent ballet, performed by Hayek. The film also has a feeling that it is a mix of traditional eastern philosophy mixed in with modern action, both willing Everly to survive, and ride the city of the scourge of Taiko.

Viewers are treated to a taste of the claustrophobia that Everly experiences, trapped in the apartment, with no way past all the Yakuza heading her way. The action is violent, and brutal, highlighting what our protagonist was forced to do, in order to survive, and look out for her family.

Everly is a fun, yet violent ride, with the lovely Salma Hayek leading the charge, showing that both woman can be serious action characters, and her character showing that once you make the decision to survive, nothing can stop you.

A pounding ride of chaos, where good faces off against evil.
