The Riot Club (DVD): Review

The Film

The Riot Club, an infamous group of ten students at Oxford University. A club that has existed through the history of the establishment, steeped in tradition, and debauchery. Two first year students are drawn into this elitist group, and shortly after their destructive initiation, the group sets off on their club dinner’

It is at this club dinner, where careers, lives and reputations can be either made or destroyed, in a single evening. As the night progresses, and the alcohol flows, behaviour changes, limits are tested, and the separation of class becomes more and more evident.

The Riot Club is a poignant look at what money can buy, and what it can not. It prompts thought, into what one would do, given the wealth and opportunity presented to the characters, and leaves one to ponder how one would behave in a similar setting.

While most of the story is shown in the dramatic, there is a slight dose of some dry British humour thrown in, on the odd occasion, lightening the mood for that moment.

The Riot Club is an interesting escape, being entertained by the excesses of wealth, and lack of rules. While it may repel some viewers, it is sure to draw many, curious to catch a glimpse of a world to which they are not often privy.

Disc And Bonus Features

The disc is encoded at a high bitrate. with no artefacts visible on screen. Those with the necessary hardware can scale the image up to a large or higher resolution screen.

Sound is presented in a 2.0 and 5.1 soundtrack, with the surround mix adding to several scenes in the film. Given the nature and genre of the story, this is not something that is used to the extreme, as one would expect in an action feature.

Disc navigation is very simple, with merely a static menu. There are also, unfortunately, no bonus features on the disc, save for a few trailers at the beginning.

The Riot Club is now available to purchase, on disc, in South Africa.
