Film
South African funny man Leon Schuster is back once again as Schuks. This time he has lost the holy grail of rugby, the Currie Cup. In lieu of a R1 million fine, the sports minister (Desmond Dube) offer Schuks a lifeline. He must create a documentary that shows South Africa in a positive light.
This leads to us following Schuks as he sets off on a journey to pay for his mistake, and put things right.
Love him, or hate him, Leon Schuster is one of the pillars to South African filmmaking. With a built-in audience, anything he produces is sure to draw the crowds at the box office, and Schuks Pay Back The Money is one of those such films, following the same hidden camera setups and gags we know him for.
While the silly humour is not to everyone’s taste, there are a wide variety of differing situations, interspersed with the overall film narrative, not to mention a fair amount of social commentary on the current political and economic climate in South Africa.
Schuks Pay Back The Money is one of those films, like Schuster himself, that you either love or hate, with no in-between. So if you are a fan of the genre, and the man, this is a definite must see. For anyone else, best get your laughs elsewhere.
