Deadpool: Review

Meet Deadpool, the most irresponsible and immature anti-hero in the Marvel universe. Former special forces operative turned mercenary, Wade Wilson, is subjected to what he believes is state-of-the-art medical treatment but which turns out to be a rogue experiment, giving him accelerated healing. Wade adopts an alter-ego in the guise of Deadpool.

Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), the character, is immature. This of the class clown, then scale him up, give him some super-abilities, weapons and skills second to none, and you have this irritation to the enemy. His one liners are constant, his jokes in poor taste, and he talks to himself a little too much. Yet, he is funny. You know you shouldn’t be laughing at this grown up brat, but we all want to indulge ourselves in the darker side, and shake off societal norms for just a little while, and this is your excuse.

As a movie, Deadpool is funny, action packed with very stylised, choreographed action, and an engrossing story to boot. Slotting into the Marvel Universe, yet making fun of this fact.

For fans of the Marvel Universe, Deadpool doesn’t bring in any significant information from other aspects or story lines. The film stands pretty much on its own. This is a great origin story of how this character came about, and we are sure to see more of him in the future.

A fun romp, letting us shirk our adult ways, and indulge in some darker humour, in this action packed story, and is a film not to be missed. Funny, exciting and a great way to escape for an afternoon.

Deadpool opens in South African cinemas on 12 February 2016
