Zama Zamas Trapped

A small group of illegal miners, so-called zama zamas, surfaced from an abandoned mine shaft in Johannesburg this week. They were the lucky ones. Others – some as young as 12 years old – were still stuck in the disused Langlaagte shaft where they had been trapped for two weeks. Search teams recovered the bodies of several miners while others emerged on their own and were later arrested. Carte Blanche asks: who’s responsible for securing Johannesburg’s disused mine shafts to avoid recurring tragedies?

Vaal Dam: Status Critical

The Vaal Dam is rapidly drying up and with the drought worsening each day, severe water restrictions are on the cards. The public have been warned that they will be fined for wastage or excessive water use, but what about the municipalities routinely mismanaging and polluting existing water resources? Are authorities equally committed to cleaning up their act? Carte Blanche heads back to the Vaal to see if promised infrastructure improvements are being implemented.

Exclusive: SANDF in the DRC

Escorted by the legendary Rooivalk combat helicopter, Carte Blanche travels to a recently-captured military camp deep in the tropical forests north of Beni, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. John Webb gains exclusive access to the SANDF’s forward-operating bases in the infamous Triangle of Death in North Kivu province as we visit our soldiers on the frontline in the battle against ADF rebels. We find soldiers who have distinguished themselves both in the field of battle as well as in crucial combat support roles, and SANDF pilots operating as part of the UN’s aviation unit who have fast developed a reputation for skill and courage. Carte Blanche also meets the SANDF’s General Derrick Mgwebi who was recently appointed to head the overall UN peace-keeping operation in the DRC – still the largest peace-keeping mission in the world.

Disabling Growth in the Disabled

Daryl-Ann suffers from cerebral palsy and microcephaly. Her parents have used Growth Attenuation Therapy to keep her growth restricted. Their argument is that her quality of life is better at a child’s size so that she can do the things her siblings can and they can more easily manage her. However opponents fear the treatment is being used for the wrong reasons. Carte Blanche asks: Should parents have the right to stunt the growth of severely disabled children to make them more manageable or is it a selfish course of action?

Producer: Phillipa Hutchison

SA Designer’s Skinny NY Buildings

Carte Blanche visits the Big Apple for stunning views from new so-called skinny buildings where an apartment will set you back a cool $50 to $100-million. We meet South African design engineer Chris Shirley, a man integral to several of these New York high-rise apartment buildings and who is taking the investment world by storm.
