The story that filled news broadcasts some years back, set on the offshore drilling rig, Deepwater Horizon. The rig exploded in April 2010, creating the worst oil spill in U.S. history, and putting the lives of the crew at great risk, in this terrible disaster.
Following crew member Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg – Lone Survivor, Transformers: Age of Extinction), beginning with a brief look at the family life of someone who works on the rigs. Mike is the focal point of the mayhem as it unfolds, with danger all around. This is a look behind the scenes of the lives and events that were not at the fore on news stations as events unfolded on the Deepwater Horizon.
The film doesn’t harp on backstories too much. It get’s down to business, setting the scene, introducing the characters, and focussing on the tragic events that played out on that fateful day. And this it does in style. Under the direction of Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Battleship), viewers are in for a charged, explosive ride as the crew battle first to save the Deepwater Horizon, and then as things become more dire, to save their own lives, and the lives of their crewmates.
Deepwater Horizon is a cut above most disaster movies, it dives right in, and delivers the expected. There are no plot twists; if you watched any of the story as it unfolded in the news, you’ll know a great deal of the outcome.
