Nelson Mandela – The Song Lives On

Concord_Nkabinde_and_David_Klassen_Photo_by_Siphiwe_Mhlambi_web

A new collaboration by Concord Nkabinde and David Klassen sees the two South African creative artists dig deep into their collective years of musical performance and production to deliver a performance piece that re-visits the essence and depth found in the words of one of the greatest humanitarians to have ever lived, Tata Nelson Mandela.

This production seeks to ensure that the impact created by the words of power, love, courage and healing that Madiba left us with, last for generations to come.

NELSON MANDELA – The Song Lives On is a public concert that marries the well-known sound of Mr. Nelson Mandela’s voice with live music and spoken word.

In the words of South Africa’s former president himself; “Music is a great blessing. It has the power to elevate and liberate us. It sets people free to dream. It can unite us to sing with one voice. Such is the value of music.”

During Heritage Month, on 23 September, at the Drostdy Teater in Stellenbosch, Nkabinde and Klassen will, for the first time, present this work that respectfully and carefully interweaves new compositions as well as existing songs with an audio-visual presentation.

Suitable for all ages, this concert promises to be a special experience, one that carries history lessons from South Africa’s past whilst inspiring us to work together to create a future of bright possibilities.

“This will be just as exciting for the audience as it will be to us, as we together re-examine the words and ideals of an Icon,” says Nkabinde.

Along with Klassen, Nkabinde has invited three well-established and highly respected Cape Town-based artists to collaborate on this concert; Mark Fransman, a highly accomplished saxophonist, pianist, flautist, vocalist, composer and music educator; Nomfundo Xaluva, a dynamic new voice in the music scene, who is also a pianist, composer and music educator; and Bulelwa Basse, a profound and prolific performance poet, language facilitator, speaker and community builder.

The result of this collaboration is a concoction of different musical styles, well-thought out musical compositions and arrangements, expertly glued together by moments of improvisation. This five-piece outfit will deliver an experience that will remain in the hearts and minds of many, for years to come.

Klassen shares his sentiments on the project; “I am excited about it. It’s got meaning and purpose. We are honoring the values and humanitarian ideals of a man who deserves to be honored in this manner.”

Integral to the NELSON MANDELA – The Song Lives On concept are free community workshops, intended to engage and inspire young artists to tap into our country’s rich heritage in order to devise new creative works.

The first workshop will take place on Thursday, 22 September at the Drostdy Theatre in Stellenbosch from 15:00 until 17:00. Young and emerging artists are invited to attend, free of charge, to learn more about the creative process and the music industry in general. Facilitators, Nkabinde and Klassen’s, along with guest artists, will also perform for those in attendance, while encouraging them to use this project as a model to draw from history and heritage when creating new artworks.

Through both the workshops and the concerts, the project seeks to encourage continued dialogue and conversation in order to realise equality and justice for all.

In the development of the content of this project, interaction and counsel from the Nelson Mandela Foundation as well as the Robben Island Mayibuye Archives has ensured a holistic way forward. To make this concert possible, the project has also received meaningful support from the SAMRO Foundation’s Concerts SA – Mobility Fund.

Additional support has been provided by Eastern Acoustics, Sennheiser SA, TC Helicon, Drostdy Teater, Millstream Guesthouse, the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, Siphiwe Mhlambi, Mark Wessels Photography and The Famous Idea.

The first presentation of the NELSON MANDELA – The Song Lives On concert will take place on Friday, 23 September at 20h15 at the Drostdy Teater in Stellenbosch. Tickets are available from Drostdy Teater at R100 each.

ACT Scholarship Recipient Wow Idols Judges

In 2012, then matriculant, Amanda Kunene sang her way to the finals of the Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) Scholarship Programme. Since winning a Scholarship, the young starlet has performed across the country and currently holds a place in the Idols SA Top 16.

Amanda_Kunene_Pic_credit_Idols_SA

“Winning an ACT Scholarship has changed my life completely,” says Kunene, “not only have my dreams of going to university come true, but I have been given the opportunity to further my knowledge on what I am passionate about.”

Since 2009, ACT has been supporting arts students through their Scholarship Programme. The only difference this year is that with additional support from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC), ACT is also able to make Scholarships available to first and second-year university students.

After winning a Scholarship in 2012, Kunene used the funding to enroll at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Howard Campus. There she completed a three-year undergraduate degree in Music and Drama Performance.

Pieter Jacobs, Chief Executive of ACT says; “It’s very rewarding to see our Scholarship recipients achieve their goals and realise their dreams. We are tremendously proud of Amanda for making it to the top 16 of Idols SA and wish her the very best as she embarks on this exciting journey.”

Since graduating, Kunene has been performing around her community and around South Africa. “I was also given the opportunity to represent Africa at the ANOC Olympic Gala Dinner in Bangkok, Thailand in 2014 with the legendary Madala Kunene,” she says. Kunene believes this artistic and educational whirlwind has helped her grow both as a person and a performer. “Being able to step on different stages where phenomenal artists have performed is such a humbling experience. I am really fortunate to be able to do what I love and to work with well-respected individuals in the entertainment industry.”

During this year’s popular production of Idols SA, Kunene wowed the celebrity judges, who granted her with a covetable Golden Ticket during the first round of auditions. This ticket, fast-tracked Kunene to the Top 16 of the competition’s 12th season. “Being on Idols has been a wonderful experience,” she beams. “And being chosen to be in the Top 16 has been the most amazing experience ever!”

Gracing the small screen on a weekly basis has garnered Kunene a throng of fans. Every Sunday, the hashtag #AmandaKunene floods Twitter with messages of praise and support for the talented young songstress.

She firmly believes her studies, which were made possible through the ACT Scholarship Programme, helped to get her to this point in her promising career. When asked what her advice for this year’s Scholarship hopefuls would be, Kunene says; “continue believing in what you love”. “You are your biggest competition in life, never compare yourself to others because there is no one else like you on this earth,” she continues. “Respect is the most important thing in life, humble yourself, and always be willing to learn.”

Kunene, who is currently working towards her Honours degree, firmly believes that hard work and practice make perfect. “Live and walk in gratitude because pressure builds diamonds,” she concludes.

After a nationwide audition process, this years’ finalists in the Grade 12, first and second years ACT Scholarship finals have been selected.

The first and second years will go head-to-head in final showcases hosted in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and the Scholarship recipients will be named at each respective event. The six Grade 12 scholars will showcase their talent at a glittering grand finale on Monday, 10 October at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg. These winners will also be named on the night.

Funded by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC), and supported by the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Organisation (DALRO) and the Nedbank Arts Affinity, the 2016 Scholarships Programme will change the lives of dramatic arts, singing, dance and musical theatre scholars and students with scholarships to the value of R800 000.

Idols XII: Introducing The Ladies

There are some women who know how to make an entrance in a packed room – and then there are the Idols SA 2016 ladies!

The eight female powerhouses made an entrance to remember when they opened Season 12’s live voting shows at Pretoria’s State Theatre with a sexy, yet classy, delivery of Rihanna’s Work. Looking relaxed in black skinny pants, white shirts and Aztec printed ponchos, they owned the stage and held the audience spellbound during the opening sequence. Talk about a memorable first impression!

As if Pretoria was not hot enough, Durban’s Afrotainment crew brought their own heat on stage; culminating in the Queen of Gqom, Babes Wodumo, performing her runaway chart topper Wololo. If anyone was in any doubt that Idols SA always bring the blaze, the first 20 minutes completely obliterated that!

The evening’s theme was “Hits of the Last Decade” and soon enough, the eight ladies came on stage to introduce themselves to Mzansi and seduce Idols faithfuls into falling in love and voting for them.

Valentine kicked things off with Beyonce’s Halo. Considering she was belting out a favourite on Queen Bey’s birthday, Valentine had a lot riding on the performance. It paid off. Gareth said she stood out among the other roses, Somizi wanted her to find her Sasha Fierce “Matlakala”, Unathi called the performance emotive and Randall congratulated her on choosing the perfect song to open the Top 16.

Things were off to a great start at the State Theatre.

Lucia followed with Adele’s Send My Love (To Your New Lover). Somizi said she has a great range and called her a future seasoned vocalist, Unathi warned that SA can be unforgiving and ruthless at this stage so Lucia needs to be on point with her delivery, Randall said it was safe and good but needed to be memorable, and Gareth agreed with him.

Bringing things home was Sgherdeed, who was a ball of dancing energy on stage while performing Deep in the Bottom by Black Coffee feat. Monique Bingham. Unathi complimented her on her interpretation both vocally and performance-wise, Randall said the performance was good but the voice quite flat, Gareth thought the song choice might not have been so great at this “critical” stage and Somizi said he got lost somewhere along Sgherdeed’s performance.

Coming in with a fighter spirit was Luke, performing Yoga by Jhanelle Mone feat. Jadena. Randall called the song choice “ambitious” but that Luke fell short, Gareth concurred with his fellow judge, Somizi felt she was restricted by the heels and uncomfortable, while Unathi thought nerves got the better of her.

Noma slowed things down with a deeply moving rendition of Rihanna’s Stay feat. Mikky Ekko. The goosebump-o-metre in the theatre went off the charts as she got a standing ovation. Gareth asked her to trust the musicians she way playing with, Somizi said not only is she gifted but has a beautiful soul as well, Unathi called the performance absolutely perfect and could barely contain her emotions, and Randall could not fault her but asked Noma to be more aware of her mic technique.

The lady with the intense facial expressions, Siyakha, brought the energy back up with local hit Valelisa by Trademark and Zinhle Ngidi. Somizi, who is unashamedly her biggest fan on the judges’ panel, said she was the girl to watch. Unathi called her voice incredible but felt distracted by her dancing, Randall believe she had done a better job of standing out than other contestants and Gareth said it was impossible to take his eyes off her.

Amanda was effortless in her performance of Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman. Unathi called her a dangerous woman, Randall gushed that it was the right song, she had presence and was emotive enough, Gareth called it his performance of the night, and Somizi was left speechless.

Nosihe closed up the show with Beyonce’s XO. Randall said her nerves got the better of her and in turn, she gave an average performance. Gareth said the song was a grade or two below expectation, Somizi said she was going to need Mzansi to forgive her so that they can keep her in. Unathi was certain that she was going to stay because Mzansi loves her despite her average week.

So who made a good impression? Who did Mzansi fall in love with at first sight? Well, we have a little time to wait because next week we have the eight guys who make up the Top 16 take their turn to seduce South Africa for votes.  Don’t miss it!

Idols SA season 12 is on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161 on Sundays at 17h30.

22 Years Of Creative Excellence, Now On Offer In Joburg

Red And Yellow Event Banner

The widely-regarded Red & Yellow School has operated successfully in Cape Town for the past 22 years. During this time, it has produced a long pedigree of outstanding graduates, many of them giants in the advertising and marketing industries today, and with dozens of creative awards under their belts. They are the living and breathing proof of the school’s value.

Now, the Red & Yellow School is in Johannesburg – and is bringing its popular 3-year diploma in Graphic Design and Art Direction (GDAD) to the new campus in 2017. The GDAD diploma’s key premise is that the marketing and creative industry needs practical problem-solvers who can conceptualise big ideas, and who have the skills to implement them. This diploma equips its students to be just that.

An Open Day is being held on Saturday, 10 September, from 10:00 to 13:00, for prospective students to come through and find out more about the GDAD diploma. The Red & Yellow School’s Johannesburg campus is located in one of the iconic buildings in the heart of the city centre, and is an integral part of the current downtown revival and rejuvenation that is underway.

Red And Yellow Open Day JHB

Lyndi Lawson-Smith, JHB Campus Director of the Red & Yellow School, comments: “Students will not only learn the theory they need, but will develop a broad range of skills that will enable them to pursue any number of creative career opportunities.”

She goes on to note that developing skills to ensure that you remain relevant in an ever-changing industry is critically important. “The conceptually driven nature of the programme ensures the longevity of the qualification and its relevance to employers – our diploma has stood the test of time and will continue to provide the industry with remarkable creative talent.”

Carmen Schaefer, who oversees the GDAD programme at the Cape Town campus, highlights that the studio environment and lecturer review teaching methodology mimic what it’s like to work in the industry.

“All the skills taught ensure that our graduates will be able to offer a meaningful contribution from day one in the workplace: as they have done for the past 22 years.”

And employers know this. It is just one of the many good reasons why it is a qualification that appeals to parents and their aspiring creative offspring.

Red & Yellow JHB Campus 1

Red & Yellow provides an exciting, stimulating learning environment with world-class resources for its students. The 3-year creative diploma is an internationally aligned and accredited qualification, taught by experienced lecturers who have many years of work experience in the industry.

For students, this qualification offers a highly practical and industry relevant programme that’s guaranteed to prepare them for the work world while developing their individual skills. Carmen suggests that “if you are someone who is creative, hard-working, but in the ‘get-your-hands-dirty-in-paint’, as opposed to the ‘hours-spent-in-front-of-the-books’ kind of a way, then this diploma is for you.”

Completing the 3-year GDAD diploma will undoubtedly open doors, whether through industry engagement, the breadth of skills learnt, the experience of being assessed and competing on an international stage, or through the internships you complete as part of the programme. Classes are kept small and students are assured of focused, personal attention and one-on-one interaction with each other and their lecturers – a key differentiator from a traditional and largely impersonal university environment.

Entrance requirements for the diploma are an NQF level 4 matric certificate with admission to diploma studies, together with a strong application test and practical portfolio submission.

To find out more about the programme and career options, to get a first-hand feel of the diploma and to meet your future lecturers, attend the Red & Yellow JHB School Open Day on 10 September. Visit www.redandyellow.co.za or email info@redandyellow.co.za for details.

Khabonina Qubeka’s Performance In Dora’s Peace Hailed As “Magnetic”

Dora’s Peace, starring Khabonina Qubeka in the title role, and directed by Kosta Kalarytis, has opened to excellent reviews.

Shot on location in Johannesburg, the film tells the story of Dora, a Hillbrow prostitute, who sets out to save a gifted young boy from the violent clutches of organised crime, in the process, she is forced to rediscover aspects of her own lost humanity.

Following its countrywide release on Friday 26 August, film critics have responded positively to this tale of an unlikely heroine and her journey of self-discovery.

IOL’s Theresa Smith calls it “a poignant crime drama” and a “strong and surprise debut from director Kosta Kalarytis”. She adds that Qubeka, whose performance she describes as magnetic, creates a complex character, “eschewing stereotype to show us an older woman who has learnt to survive, she plays to her strengths and has no mercy”. Smith has praise for the script too and for Geo Hohn’s music which “beautifully underscores the atmosphere, egging on suspense one moment, sharing delight the next”, and for Nic Hofmeyr’s cinematography.

Emmanuel Tjiya writing in The Sowetan, says the film is a “much needed departure from all the glossy rom-coms and launches us into an exhilarating path of crime drama”. He describes the film as fast-paced, with “a heart-palpitating action sequence central to the screenplay that will leave you begging for more just in the first 15 minutes”. But it’s Qubeka’s performance that nails it: “With her finesse, Qubeka gently ushers you through a tale of how and adolescent mistake turned the world of a once naïve village upside-down, thrusting her into a dark world of prostitution and drugs in downtown Jozi. Qubeka’s genius in her portrayal is in how she manages to capture a strong character, with countless demons, but at the same time bring to the table so much heart and vulnerability that it’s sure to resonate with a female audience”.

Reviewing the film in the Cape Times, Steyn du Toit says, “Thanks to the spot-on casting of its lead actress, a new breed of local silver screen icon has the potential to be born”. He also praised the film’s costume design, soundtrack and stellar cinematography.

What matters most is that audiences are agreeing with the critics. On its opening weekend, the film took 85% of the box office of Yesterday (South Africa’s Oscar submission in 2004), 309% of Life Above All (South Africa’s Oscar submission in 2010), and 106% of Monster’s Ball, which earned Halle Berry an Oscar for Best Actress in 2002.

“Dora’s Peace is in good company, and performing well to its intended market”, says Helen Kuun , of Indigenous Film Distribution, which is distributing the film in South Africa. “It’s clear that the film has a message for women across South Africa and across generations, about deriving te strength to stand up for themselves and what they believe in, but what is most exciting is Khabonina Qubeka’s performance as Dora. She’s and actress to watch and local audiences can look forward to seeing her next year in Gersh Kgamedi’s She is King”.

Jackie Chan, Anne V. Coates, Lynn Stalmaster And Frederick Wiseman To Receive Academy’s 2016 Governors Awards

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (August 30) to present Honorary Awards to actor Jackie Chan, film editor Anne V. Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster and documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman. The four Oscar® statuettes will be presented at the Academy’s 8th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 12, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center®.
“The Honorary Award was created for artists like Jackie Chan, Anne Coates, Lynn Stalmaster and Frederick Wiseman – true pioneers and legends in their crafts,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “The Board is proud to honor their extraordinary achievements, and we look forward to celebrating with them at the Governors Awards in November.”

After making his motion picture debut at the age of eight, Chan brought his childhood training with the Peking Opera to a distinctive international career. He starred in – and sometimes wrote, directed and produced – more than 30 martial arts features in his native Hong Kong, charming audiences with his dazzling athleticism, inventive stunt work and boundless charisma. Since “Rumble in the Bronx” in 1996, he has gone on to enormous worldwide success with the “Rush Hour” movies, “Shanghai Noon,” “Shanghai Knights,” “Around the World in 80 Days,” “The Karate Kid” and the “Kung Fu Panda” series of animated films.

A native of Reigate, England, Coates worked her way up to lead editor on a handful of features before collaborating with David Lean on “Lawrence of Arabia” and winning her first Oscar. In her more than 60 years as a film editor, she has worked side by side with many leading directors on an impressive range of films, including Sidney Lumet (“Murder on the Orient Express”), Richard Attenborough (“Chaplin”) and Steven Soderbergh (“Erin Brockovich”). She also earned four additional Oscar nominations, for “Becket,” “The Elephant Man,” “In the Line of Fire” and “Out of Sight.”
Stalmaster, a one-time stage and screen actor from Omaha, Nebraska, began working in casting in the mid-1950s. Over the next five decades, he applied his talents to more than 200 feature films, including such classics as “Inherit the Wind,” “In the Heat of the Night,” “The Graduate,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Harold and Maude,” “Deliverance,” “Coming Home,” “Tootsie” and “The Right Stuff.” He has enjoyed multiple collaborations with directors Stanley Kramer, Robert Wise, Hal Ashby, Norman Jewison and Sydney Pollack, and has been instrumental in the careers of such celebrated actors as Jon Voight, Richard Dreyfuss, Scott Wilson, Jill Clayburgh, Christopher Reeve and John Travolta.
From his home base in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Wiseman has made one film almost every year since 1967, illuminating lives in the context of social, cultural and government institutions. He created a sensation with his first documentary feature, “Titicut Follies,” which went behind the scenes at Bridgewater State Hospital for the criminally insane. The film established an unobtrusive, observational storytelling style that has strongly identified his work, from the gritty (“Law and Order,” “Public Housing,” “Domestic Violence”) to the uplifting (“La Danse – The Paris Opera Ballet,” “National Gallery,” “In Jackson Heights”).
The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”

The Light Between Oceans: Review

Directed by Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond The Pines) and bringing together the acting talents of Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave), Alicia Vikander (Jason Bourne) and Rachel Weisz (Oz: The Great and Powerful), The Light Between Oceans follows a time in the life of a lighthouse keeper and his wife off the coast of Western Australia, and how they raise a baby that they have rescued from a rowboat that drifts up to their small corner of the world.

The story is a straight forward one, about love and what one is capable of doing for the sake of love. But it certainly begs the question, of how far we would go for love, or what we are capable of doing for the ones we love. Can we really find happiness and peace if we have to cross some line in order to achieve this?

The cast bring a fantastic ensemble performance, tugging at the heart strings, and evoking a number of emotions. Each character has traits that one will love, and traits that one will hate, bringing all these to a boil in the small world they inhabit, crossing paths all too often, and eventually having to not only face each other, but themselves too.

Thoroughly engrossing, The Light Between Oceans is a work of art, in all aspects. Not forgetting the cinematography, and subtleties of the score, this is certainly a film that is bound to be enjoyed by all who venture forth and experience what it has to offer.

The Light Between Oceans will likely leave viewers with one burning question at the end. Who do they tell to go see this? It’s hard to pin-point exactly who to recommend the film to, yet most people will sing its praises once they’ve had the chance. This is sure to be one of those late-night chance films, that one happens across, and which turns out to be totally enthralling, engrossing, and a wonderful experience.

Noma Gives A Voice To The Homeless

Spanish filmmaker Pablo Pinedo sensational and stirring documentary Noma, which was showcased at the HotDocs 2016 in Toronto, won the Amnesty International Durban Human Rights Award at the past edition of the Durban International Film Festival on June.

Noma, was screened at The Bioscope in Maboneng district in Johannesburg, from the 20 to the 24 August. In Cape Town it will be screened at The Labia Theatre in Orange Street, from this coming Friday 2 September, until the 8 September. At 6:15PM on the screen number 3.

Challenging conventional filmmaking, Pablo Pinedo is very much an auteur when it comes to his well-researched and structured Noma, using his skills as producer, writer, director and cinematographer to create an impressionistic documentary that is different from traditional filmmaking.

Noma tells the story of Nomaliphathwe Gwele, a 25 year old single mother of two, who lives in a backyard in a rented shack, and wants to improve her life. To do that she decides to join a land occupation action to build her own shack in the new settlement but risking violent evictions.
Pinedo found inspiration for Noma when he documented evictions in Cape Town and surroundings, ‘’to be a human shield for the residents and use the ‘media’ presence as an attenuator for law enforcement repression.’’

“After documenting several evictions I felt the necessity of telling the story from before, to make audiences and society understand the reasons and conditions/circumstances that leads someone to occupy land and erect a structure to name home. Theres a real social drama related to housing in this country, that still affects thousands of people, in spite of being 22 years in a so-called democracy, after Apartheid.’’

Based on the true story of Nomaliphathwe Gwele, who represents a huge portion of the South African contemporary youth in similar situation, living in appalling conditions and surviving with a precarious underpaid job in the best of the cases, the documentary focuses in the birth and exponential growth of a new slum, and all that it implies.

“Personally I have been always fascinated by homeless people. That perseverance and endurance that they have strikes me, like Nomaliphathwe, perhaps because it is something completely opposed to the way I am used to live. Diametrically opposed to my comfort zone. Housing issue is an universal issue. We see examples of it all over the world: the favelas in Brazil, the squatter camps in the outskirts of Madrid and the house evictions due to economic recession to thousands of people all over Spain, the Rumanian gipsy camps in Italy…. I lived in Rome, for five years, during that time I spent around 2 years hanging out, researching and shooting with homeless people in the surroundings of Termini, the main train station, for a film about intimacy and dreams.

With more than 12 years’ experience in the TV and Film industry, Pablo has worked in numerous films and documentaries, as a filmmaker and cinematographer, as well in theatre as lighting designer for several plays, among them, The Beauty Of Incomplete Things in 2014. Before setting down in Cape Town where he created http://everywherefilms.co.za, he spent four years in Italy, in search of the Italian neo-realism and acquired strong skills in cinematography.
