Doctor Strange: Review

Top neurosurgeon, Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch – Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Imitation Game, The Fifth Estate) has an unfortunate accident, partly brought on by his self-absorbed ego. Devastated, and with western medicine unable to help him, he embarks on a journey that eventually leads him to a world of mystic arts.

Doctor Strange

As an origin movie, Doctor Strange will not disappoint. It fits snugly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), so as with all other Marvel movies, wait until the end of the credits for any post credit scenes containing easter eggs and hints to what is next in the story of Stephen Strange.

As for the film itself, the cast does not disappoint. Well rounded, and three dimensional characters. We have Mondo (Chiwetel Ijiofor – 12 Years A Slave, The Martian, Triple 9). A master of the arts, but torn between what is right, and what he has been taught. The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton – Snowpiercer, Hail, Caesar!) in her usual brilliance, and commanding presence on screen. And Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen – Casino Royale, Clash of the Titans) brings a special kind of evil to the role. Each supporting acting is at a level one would expect of such a film, with Cumberbatch bringing nothing short of his A-game once more.

The effects in the film are mind-blowing, conjuring up thoughts of Inception in some cases. However, as marvelous as they are, they feel right at home, as if all the craziness, mystic spells and supernatural events are an everyday occurrence.

Doctor Strange is a thoroughly entertaining film. It has some very well choreographed action scenes, with awesome effects. A storyline that while part of the Marvel Universe, can happily stand on its own. The film has more humour than one would expect. So with all these positive traits, it will appeal to a very wide audience, to be enjoyed by all. One caveat however, is to be aware of the cinema that one is viewing it in. There are far too many cinemas in South Africa that either do not have the correct equipment to show a film that is not very close to totally dark, or they do not have the know how to use or install said equipment. Having a film screened that is far too dark robs audiences of so much detail, and disconnects them to a large extent from the movie. Add to that, that some cinemas are not able to actually project the entire picture, having a portion cut off on either side of the screen, and this does not bode well. A better choice would be to see the film in all its glory, in Imax.

Doctor Strange, a fun trip to the movies, for the whole family, with lots more on the horizon for the films universe. The film opens 4 November 2016 in South African cinemas.

A Celebration Of Comedy And Local Film With The Release Of Jonathan

jonathan2016-10-31

Comedy and local cinema join hands for a series of meet and greets and pre-release screenings for the hilarious South African movie, Jonathan. The film stars comedian Rikus de Beer as Jonathan, who will entertain audiences with his special brand of humour at select Ster-Kinekor sites over the next few weeks. The film is scheduled to release nationally at Ster-Kinekor cinemas on Friday, 02 December.

The Jonathan roadshow kicks off on Wednesday, 02 November at Ster-Kinekor Matlosana Mall in Klerksdorp. Fans of the comedian and those looking for a hilarious night out should head down to the cinema from 7pm, to meet the comedian and catch some comedic banter as ‘Jonathan’ welcomes audiences and introduces the special pre-release screening of the movie, which will screen from 8pm. Bookings for this exclusive Ster-Kinekor event are now open. This event moves to Ster-Kinekor Mooirivier Mall in Potchefstroom on Thursday, 03 November.

The following week, the roadshow moves to Ster-Kinekor Mimosa Mall in Bloemfontein on Thursday, 10 November, before heading to the Ster-Kinekor cinemas at Vaal Mall (Vanderbijlpark) on 15 November, Garden Route Mall (George) on 16 November, TygerValley in Cape Town on 17 November and Eikestad in Stellenbosch on 18 November.

The final two pre-screenings and the opportunity to meet ‘Jonathan” in person before watching his hilarious antics on the big screen, take place at Ster-Kinekor Kolonnade in Pretoria on 23 November, and at the East Rand Mall in Benoni on 24 November.

Rikus de Beer is a South African internet phenomenon and one of the country’s top-billed comedians, who rose to notoriety when he started recording voice clips as jokes for his friends on WhatsApp. Rikus created the fictional character of ‘Jonathan’ in 2013 and, since then, he has been ‘giving advice’ and ‘teaching guys to be better at life in general’.

In Jonathan the movie, Jonathan (Rikus de Beer), who is in his late 20s and still lives with his parents, is a dreamer and wannabe stand-up comedian. After another failed open-mic performance, he gets drunk and crashes his father’s car on the way home. This is the last straw for his loving but fed-up parents and now, for the first time in his life, he has to take care of himself. With nowhere else to go, he becomes a car guard. When he falls head-over-heels in love, Jonathan realises that to win her heart, he has to embark on a rollercoaster journey of self-discovery.

The film is directed and written by Sallas de Jager, and produced by Sallas de Jager, Rikus de Beer and John-Henry Opperman. Starring alongside de Beer in Jonathan are some of South Africa’s most popular actors, including Rika Sennett, Brümilda van Rensburg, Lizz Meiring, Beáte Opperman, Paul Eilers, Eric Nobbs, Frank Opperman, Marnus Kruger, Anel Alexander, Albert Pretorius, Jacques Bessenger and Francois Viljoen.

For more information about the pre-release screenings of Jonathan, visit www.sterkinekor.com or movies.sterkinekor.co.za. Follow @sterkinekor on Twitter or Facebook at Ster-Kinekor Theatres. For queries, call Ticketline on 0861 MOVIES (668 437) or you can book at the box office.

Bevin Exits Idols As Top 5 Is Announced

The race to the finish line is on!

bevin-idolstop5It was smiles, hugs and good vibes when Idols bid farewell to 19-year-old Bevin Samuels from Port Elizabeth, who did not receive enough votes this week to keep him in the competition.

After tonight, Idols SA contestants can be counted on one hand and Lucia, Thami, Noma, Tebogo and Terra Cox are this season’s official Top Five.

Like last week, each contestant performed twice with different themes. Round One’s theme was How It Should Have Been Done and saw the Top Five picking butchered songs by Wooden Mic performers. Round Two was called My Idol, and contestants chose a song by their musical inspiration.

Lucia was up first, singing R. Kelly’s If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time followed by Lira’s Ngaphakade. Gareth gave her a glowing report, praising her consistency and “beautiful” performances. “You deserve to record your own album and conquer the SA music industry,” was Somizi’s take. Randall agreed, saying no matter what happens in the next weeks, Lucia has a career post-Idols.

Thami’s performance of Hero by Enrique Iglesias saw him show a rare emotional connection with the song and audience. He continued to surprise when he chose James Brown’s So Good for his second act. The performance was on fire – complete with the stage shimmying and a split at the end of the performance! The crowd went wild and Unathi and Gareth gave him a standing ovation. “Ladies and gentlemen, the hardest working man on Idols this season!” declared Randall.

Noma chose Josh Groban’s You Raise Me Up, followed by Heaven by Beyoncé. Her rousing rendition of the first song earned her a standing ovation from three of the judges, with Proverb proclaiming that she was “taking us to church!” She continued with the sentimental ballads by dedicating her second song to a recently deceased friend. Randall was not crazy about both being slow songs.

Tebogo brought out the acoustic guitar for both performances – We Found Love by Ed Sheeran and Asa’s There Is Fire on The Mountain. Unathi gave him a thumbs up “for reminding us that you are the only person who plays an instrument in the Top Five”, adding “I’m so happy you didn’t get this far last year because you wouldn’t have been able to deliver what you are giving us now.”

Terra Cox closed off the show with Adele’s Hello, followed by Mariah Carey’s If It’s Over. He received mixed reviews from the judges. “I didn’t love the Adele earlier, but you brought out the drama this time around. And when you do bring out the drama it’s really dramatic,” said Gareth. Somizi advised him to “be patient with yourself and choose songs that will show us a different side to you”, while Randall cautioned that having good and bad performances “don’t win you Idols”.

Now You See Me 2 (DVD): Review

Film

The Four Horsemen resurface. Now forcibly recruited by a tech genius to pull off an impossible heist, their biggest to date. It has been a year now since they outwitted the FBI and won over the public.

Now You See Me 2 is an engrossing film. It is fun, with action, mis-direction, a plot that will leave the viewer guessing as it twists and turns.

The film features a highly talented ensemble cast: Jesse Eisenberg (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, American Ultra), Mark Ruffalo (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Now You See Me), Woody Harrelson (Triple 9, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) , Dave Franco (22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie), Daniel Radcliffe, Lizzy Caplan, Sanaa Lathan, Michael Caine (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Interstellar) and Morgan Freeman (Lucy, Transcendence). With names like these, and their filmographies, there is talent abound.

As for rewatch value of the film, although subsequent views would not have the allure of all the plot twists, there are many subtleties to the story that are easily missed in an initial viewing, making it well worth seeing again. Read the full review of Now You See Me 2 here.

Disc

Technically, the disc is a huge disappointment. There are some artefacts in the video in some scenes, most likely from the compression process. And the missing bonus features that are listed on the DVD box.

The main feature is great, but let down by a poor quality disc.

Now You See Me 2 is available now, to purchase on disc, in South Africa.

Video

The disc is encoded at a high average bitrate, however in several scenes (most notably those with blue stage lighting) there are compression artefacts visible on screen. Colours do also appear washed out.

It would not be recommended to scale this up to a larger or higher resolution screen, as this would merely serve to exacerbate the lower quality visuals.

Audio

There is a choice of two audio soundtracks, namely a Dolby Digital 5.1 track, and a 2.0 stereo downmix.

In the 5.1 track, dialogue is clear via the centre speaker. Surround channels are used to great effect in many scenes to expand the on-screen action, and further draw the viewer in to the story.

Navigation

From the start, the disc dazzles with flashy menus, with video backgrounds taken from some clips in the main film. These are non-spoilers. There is a music accompaniment for the menus.

Navigation is simple though, and easy to follow, with choices to play the movie, a sub-menu for selecting between Dolby Surround or Dolby Stereo and another sub-menu for scene selection. Scenes are chosen from small still image thumbnails, with neither a chapter number or description (unless a faint number in the thumbnail counts). The thumbnails are in black and white, with ten per sub-menu screen, making it rather difficult to pick a specific chapter in the film.

Selecting the audio menu on your DVD software or set-top box will take you to the audio setup menu, but there is no option to resume the film, and it starts from the beginning again.

Bonus Features

The DVD box states that there are two bonus features. An audio commentary by director Jon M. Chu, and a feature “You Can’t Look Away”, however neither of these are accessible on the disc, and likely not present.

No Holds Barred As Two More Deals Are Clinched In The Shark Tank – Episode 5 Summary

Now that all five of the Sharks in M-Net and Telkom SA’s Shark Tank South Africa have invested in a number of diverse local businesses, the gloves came off this week as they started snapping at each other in the face of some brand new budding business owners. Amongst the entrepreneurs who were brave enough to step into the tank this week, two received deals as Sharks Dawn Nathan-Jones and Gil Oved landed some interesting new additions to their portfolios.

Dawn, the only female Shark in the tank, made it clear from day one that she’ll invest in people who she believes in, despite whether their business projections are already big or are starting off small. It was no wonder then, that when 24-year-old Thabiso Mokomele from Gugulethu in Cape Town entered the tank, Dawn immediately got a glint in her eye.

Thabiso’s clothing line, “T-Squared” was started out of his own garage a few years ago. Since then, his distinctive streetwear brand has grown to the point where he now owns eight industrial sewing machines and his current premises is literally bursting at the seams. He needed the Sharks to give him the capital to expand, and quick. “You’re employing five people,” fellow Shark Marnus stated. “If we could get 400 000 entrepreneurs in this country on the level that you are, then unemployment is solved,” he raved. Dawn also loved Thabiso and his business from the start, and when he informed the Sharks that he is now branching into producing uniforms for local schools, it was enough for Dawn to take the plunge. Not only did she offer Thabiso much-needed capital to expand his business immediately, but she also gave him something that the other Sharks couldn’t: her time. She is relocating to Cape Town at the end of this year, and part of her deal included her one-on-one dedication to growing “T-Squared” in the Mother City.

A far cry from bustling Gugulethu, a husband and wife team from the Karoo became the second entrepreneurs to land a deal in the Shark Tank, with their novel business called “Creative Doormats”. Having married straight out of university, Henco and Chantelle Wiid had to get creative in order to make extra money to get by. They started “Creative Doormats” as a sideline business, and came to the Sharks in the hopes of taking it from sideline to full time. Their business is a simple one: they manufacture bespoke doormats with unique and personalised messages on them and are able to produce the mats at low margins, thanks to a secret time-saving technique that they developed themselves.

Again, it was a case of investing in the people rather than just in the business, as a number of the Sharks started showing some serious interest in the Wiids. Vinny was first to offer them a deal, but in a move that the rest of the Sharks deemed rude and arrogant, he only gave them five seconds to accept, and without giving them the opportunity to hear from any of his fellow Sharks. This left the young couple speechless and unable to take Vinny up on his offer, but luckily for them, both Gil and Dawn chipped in with counter offers to Vinny’s, and both for more money than they initially asked for! In the end, and despite a brand new offer from Vinny, Henco and Chantelle eventually decided to accept marketing guru Gil Oved’s offer of R150 000 for a 25% stake in their company.

As always, there were some unlucky attempts to receive a financial boost in tonight’s show too. Yet another tech endeavor, an app called “Farmboek” specifically aimed at the farming and agricultural community in South Africa, did not reap the rewards that farmer Andre Groenewald was hoping for. The fact that Andre’s “Farmboek” app seemed solid as an idea was not in question. Businessman Romeo Kumalo told Andre, “there may be a need in the market for what you are trying to do, but I simply can’t see how you are going to monetise it.” Accounting boss Marnus Broodryk also weighed in by telling Andre that “there’s so much that still needs to be done to turn Farmboek into a full-on business.” For those simple reasons, all five of the Sharks were out and Andrew returned to his farm empty-handed.

Another entrepreneur who made the mistake of coming into the tank with an idea but nothing to back it up as a lucrative business endeavour was young biokineticist Bram Brand (27). He entered the tank with a 3-D prototype of an invention that he had developed to help sufferers of back and neck pain massage their painful muscles from the comfort of their own home. Unfortunately for Bram, it was just that: a prototype. He did not have any medical research or endorsements to back up his invention, and while his intentions were good, he simply did not have the supporting evidence to convince the impatient Sharks. “The problem is, you lack hustle,” Gil told Bram. “As an entrepreneur you need to be a hustler. If you are hungry for this, come back with some real interest and an understanding of how you’re going to sell more products and make us our money back. I’m out.” His fellow Sharks were all in agreement too.

Shark Tank SA, sponsored by Telkom SA, is screened on Sundays between 18:00 and 19:00 on M-Net 101. The series will also be available on DStv Catch Up and streamed live on DStv Now.

The Accountant: Review

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck – Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) is a math savant, also known at The Accountant. He uncooks the books many clients in the seedy underworld, and as he takes on a new client, the US Treasury Department and it’s agent Ray King (J.K. Simmons – Zootopia, Terminator Genisys) closes in on his activities.

As the body count begins to rise, Christian finds himself protecting Dana Cummings (Anna Kendrick – Into The Woods), a low-level bookkeeper who has stumbled upon a massive international scheme, that sets her up as a target for a host of killers and evil-doers. Kendrick brings her usual heartwarming charm to Dana, and although this does pretty much unnoticed by Christian (leading to a few awkward, yet rather humourous moments), he does notice something in her that brings him out of his shell, and propels him along a collision course with some of the toughest killers around.

Affleck goes all out in his portrayal of a high functioning autistic, including a few tense scenes showing his coping mechanisms, likely brought about by his overly-strict military father, who always puts discipline first.

The Accountant drifts between a tense thriller, and an all out action, adding small doses of humour at several intervals. And this mix is just right. A plot that will leave audiences guessing, with many story threads feeling rather circular, connecting many aspects of Christian’s past to his present, and so many chance (or not so must chance) encounters with people along the way. A good part of the film will leave viewers thinking, yet the action scenes are not lacking.

A fun, and engrossing film, with well-rounded characters, a great cast and entertaining story make for fun viewing.

The Accountant opens 28 October 2016 in South African cinemas.

Money Monster (DVD): Review

Film

Host of a television show on finances and investing, Lee Gates (George Clooney – Gravity, Tomorrowland) and his producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts – Mother’s Day) find themselves in a tense situation when, after some bad information given out by the show, an investor who has lost everything takes over the studio. The investor, Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell) does this live on air.

Money Monster is a film that finds just the right balance between tension and humour. Even the ridiculous dance by Clooney’s character Lee, as part of his show, just seems right. As if it were meant to be there, and not only would his quirky and over-the-top show be missing something without it, the film Money Monster would be too.

With a cast, the likes of Oscar winners George Clooney and Julia Roberts, and a talented supporting cast, helmed by Oscar winning Jodie Foster in the director’s seat, there is no doubt this is going to be an engrossing ride.

Money Monster does dig up memories of Dog Day Afternoon (Al Pacino), with a robbery and hostages live on television, with a few similarities, including the level of talent and creative story telling.

Money Monster grips the viewer right from the start. Characters are revealed as the story progresses, with viewers knowing just enough at each stage to be able to concentrate on the story as the plot thickens and other deeds and underhanded dealings are revealed, adding to the ensemble of people who might be to blame for Kyle’s misfortune. The story does not have too many twists and turns that it becomes hard to follow, but it is certainly not one that will have audiences guessing the outcome from the get-go.

A well rounded film, bringing the right mix of tension, humour and engrossing story, adding a talented cast, and holding the viewers focus right to the very end.

Disc

Money Monster is available now, to purchase on disc, in South Africa.

Video

Video is encoded at a high bitrate. There are no visible artefacts on screen. Colours in the film are vibrant (especial the reflections from the many screens in the studio and control room). Blacks are dark, but maintain detail (also important, as there are many scenes in darker settings).

Viewers who wish, can scale the film up to a larger or higher resolution screen.

Audio

Audio is encoded in a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Dialogue is clear via the centre channel, with use of the surrounds to further enhance the on-screen events, and draw the viewer in to the story.

Navigation

The disc starts by presenting the viewer with a choice of languages, with a creative background still of a television test pattern and money, both tying in to the theme of the film. Once selected, there are a few trailers, that autoplay. While there is no way to skip to the next trailer, these can be fast-forwarded or skipped in their entirety.

The menus hold this same theme idea, with static background images and some music. Navigation is simple, and easy to follow.

Options are again available for languages, a scene selection sub-menu with chapter numbers and thumbnail stills, and another sub-menu for special features.

Bonus Features

The disc begins with a trailer for Ghostbusters (although misleading, the trailer gives the impression this is a sequel to Ghostbusters and not a remake), a trailer for The Meddler, Concussion, and Angry Birds.

Deleted Scenes: Three scenes deleted from the film, with an option to play all as part of a playlist, or to pick them one at a time. Included in the list is a different opening, on more of a global scale.

George Clooney: The Money Man: A short featurette with director Jodie Foster talking about the show Money Monster, actor George Clooney talking a bit about the character, writer Jamie Linden talking about the character arcs and stories, and other cast and crew.

This is a brief look behind the scenes, and an insight in to the character driving the story forward.

Inside The Pressure Cooker: A slightly longer featurette, again with input from the cast and crew. Talking about the challenges of the film, the tension, cynicism and humour that create a well rounded film, with many varied pieces.

Analysis Of A Scene: The Showdown: A short piece, that looks at the final moments. How the story is rounded off, and the confrontation and camaraderie with Lee and Kyle. The entire story of the film leads to this final incident.

Dan The Automator (Featuring Del The Funky Homosapien) “What Makes The World Go ’round (Money!)” Music Video: With some footage from the film, and a song in keeping to the music Lee plays as part of his show, there is the option to view and listen to music used by the film.

There is also a chance to replay the previews at the beginning of the disc.

Independence Day Resurgence (DVD): Review

Film

It has been twenty years since mankind defeated the aliens in the first Independence Day film. With the loss of three billion people, and the capture of alien technology, Earth has rebuilt. People are united now for peace, and have been preparing to defend the planet from any future threat from the stars.

The old favourites are back, with Jeff Goldblum (as David Levinson), Bill Pullman (as President Whitmore), Brent Spiner (as an even quirkier Dr. Brakish Okun), and joined by new comers Liam Hemsworth (Jake Morrison), Sela Ward (President Lanford) and Maika Monroe (Patricia Whitmore).

As the film begins, once again a signal has been detected. And while the the smart people are busy figuring out what this may be, the audience has already looked ahead to determine that the original aliens are returning, saving viewers from the puzzle of signal interpretation, so they can follow the establishment of the various characters that will become the heroes of the story, played out by an ensemble of known-names and talented newcomers.

Independence Day Resurgence, however, borrows far too much from the first film, which was a critically acclaimed hit with critics and audiences. From the overuse of footage as news broadcasts, the repeated use of President Whitmore’s big monologue, right down to camera angles and shots from the first film (shooting the glass of a containment chamber when Whitmore is held by an alien).

The initial story is being repeated, in a sense, a little too much. Relying on nostalgia for the first film, rather than allowing this one to stand a bit more, on its own. And it is for this reason that one should definitely see the first film, before embarking a viewing session of this one. This will, however, show the many short-comings of the sequel.

Special effects certainly show the progression into the new century, but relying on those, too, does not promote an engrossing film.

Independence Day Resurgence is bound to appeal to fans of the first film, however, it is that very reason it is likely to disappoint them.

A science fiction film, with aliens attacking Earth, that relies too much on the strength of the genre and its predecessor, rather than pushing the bounds of story and creativity.

Disc

Overall, the disc is technically of a high quality, with several bonus features and extra material.

Independence Day Resurgence is available now, to purchase on disc, in South Africa.

Video

Video is encoded at a high average bitrate. There are no visible artefacts on screen. Colours are vibrant, with no bleed. There are several darker scenes, where blacks are deep, and maintain their detail. Contrast in some of the scenes outside the moonbase is high, providing detail in light and dark areas.

Viewers with the necessary hardware or software are able to scale the film up to a larger or higher resolution screen, should they wish.

Audio

The main audio soundtrack is presented in a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. This is encoded at a high average bitrate.

Dialogue is clear via the centre channel, with ample use of the surround channels during the many action scenes, serving the expand the on-screen action and further draw the viewer in to the film experience.

Navigation

Navigation is simple, and easy to use. The menu backgrounds are static images, saving room for more bonus material and less compression of the main feature.

There are sub-menus for selection of the audio track and subtitle languages. A menu for scene selection, with numbered scenes and still image thumbnails from that scene.

The extras menu presents a list of bonus feature titles.

The disc does start with an warning about pirating movies. This can not be skipped. It then has an advert for Digital HD media, for online film distribution. This too, can not be skipped.

Bonus Features

Deleted Scenes: There are several deleted scenes included on the disc, including an alternate opening. These can be viewed individually, or via a “play all” menu option. While the scenes do not include too much additional information with regards to the overall plot, they do show a slight insight into how the filmmakers initially saw the film playing out.

The scenes have the option to be viewed with commentary by Roland Emmerich.

The War Of 1996: A mini-feature in the form or style of a news story, showing footage from the first Independence Day film, and bringing the viewer up to speed on the changes that have taken place on Earth since the initial encounter with the aliens, showing how the planet has not only been rebuilt, but united in peace and utilising the captured alien technology for mankind.

It’s Early ABQ!: A slightly slapstick feature, in the form of an early morning television magazine show, with an interview of Julius Levinson on his book. The humour is sure to appeal to some viewers, but would be a matter of personal taste.

Audio Commentary By ROland Emmerich: Director, writer and producer Roland Emmerich narrates this audio commentary, as the film plays. While one gets the feeling he has a deep personal connection with the film, and a love of the work, the commentary is interspersed with many little facts, never really delving too deeply into the process of creation. It is a bit slow and laboured at times, so is likely to lose the interest of some.

Audio commentaries are always good for avid fans and filmmakers alike, so its inclusion is great, nonetheless.

Theatrical Trailers: A selection of two theatrical trailers for the film, and a TV spot. Not adding too much to the film, but interesting to see the reveals used in the trailers, as compared with the very simple teasers used for the first Independence Day film.
