Mechanical heart

Philasande Dladla was an ordinary ten-year-old Johannesburg boy until he contracted what seemed to be nothing more than the common flu virus. But suddenly diagnosed with acute heart failure, he faced a desperate fight for survival. In a first on the African continent, doctors managed to save his life by replacing his failing heart with not one, but two so-called mechanical hearts. Carte Blanche witnesses the miracle of modern medical technology at work.

Pressure on Pravin

In February this year, just before Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan delivered a highly anticipated budget speech, news broke that he was being investigated by the Hawks in relation to an intelligence unit within the SA Revenue Service established in 2007—during his tenure as Commissioner there. In August Gordhan declined to appear before the Hawks as requested. Then, on Tuesday—two weeks before delivery of his medium term budget—the NPA announced that a summons, on charges of alleged fraud, had been delivered to him. Support for Gordhan has poured in from various quarters and, while the Minister has spent much time reassuring investors that the economy is making a turnaround, every move against him has sent shock waves through the markets and hit the rand hard, renewing fears of a downgrade to junk status. Carte Blanche brings key analysis to these developments.
