12th South African Horrorfest Halloween Event

The South African HorrorFest film festival and Halloween event strikes 12!

It will hit the Labia Theatre (Cape Town) for 10 days across 26 October to 4 November, with everything from movies, short films and a live movie soundtrack performance, to literature, Halloween dress-up and a mini-market.

The 17 mind-blowing movies on the slab include:
vampyres, spirits from the other side, a zombie ambushed strip club, Frankenstein’s daughter, swinging ’60s slasher, an absorbed twin determined on come out, a haunted bed, giant leeches, a lesbian couple on the rampage, a backpacker’s Indonesian nightmare, five intersecting tales of terror, a gory night out, a found footage shoot gone wrong, a documentary on the long lost & most dangerous film ever made from the dawn of cinema, Dr. Frankenfurter, Brad & Janet, and a multitude of incredible short films with a wide range of genre sub-divisions and fantastic execution.

The majority of the movies in this 12th edition of the HorrorFest will be making their African premieres, and you can be the first to see the new anticipated prequel OUIJA: Origin Of Evil, before anyone else (27 Oct)
The Makabra Ensemble’s live movie soundtrack performance this year (29 Oct) will be for the stunning 1932 French-German classic VAMPYR (linked with the audience Halloween dress-up competition and mini-market outside the cinema).

And it’s dress-up and participation time with the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW! (28 Oct)

The festival opens on Wednesday 26 October (6-8pm) with the (free) Bloody Parchment literary evening, including local authors reading from their works.

Audience give-aways will include a wide range of chilling books from Penguin Random House, and exciting DVD titles from Next Entertainment and Ster Kinekor. For the bearded Horrorfesters, Dark Waters has some smooth beard product prizes up for grabs.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary of creating new soundtracks to classic silent films and performing it live to the screen, for the 12th SA HorrorFest the Makabra Ensemble will breathe new life into the amazing 1932 French-German film VAMPYR. Special guest musicians: Nerine Dorman and Ronnie Belcher.
In VAMPYR, Allan Grey, a student of the occult enters the village of Courtempierre. It is under the curse of a vampire and he is drawn into a surreal experience as the elements of the evil vampire and the victims under its spell unfold. The amazing visuals will be accompanied by a new live soundtrack and the event serves as the HorrorFest’s official Halloween dress-up competition (with great prizes attached)

For over 4 decades, the cult classic musical film the Rocky Horror Picture Show has thrilled audiences around the globe. Still as irresistibly fun and fresh as always, the phenomenon is not waning. A group of filmmakers travel to a cabin in a remote part of Texas to film the first ever 3D found footage movie. However, they find themselves becoming part of their film and battling for their lives as the evil entity from their film begins to show up in their behind-the-scenes footage.

An ancient evil is entwined in the wood of an antique bed. Four twenty-somethings find themselves stuck on this haunted bed, where leaving means suffering a gruesome death. After a traumatic accident a woman begins to experience strange episodic-black outs, hallucinations, and night terrors-that lead her to discover that she has a tumour, a benign growth that is the remnants of a “vanishing twin” absorbed in utero.
The tumour manifests itself as the dark and demented stranger, resulting in psychotic episodes making her a danger to everyone, her evil side threatening to take over.

In Florida a pair of gigantic, intelligent leeches live in an underwater cave. They begin dragging locals down to their cave, where they slowly feed on them, draining their victims of blood!

After Dr. Frankenstein is murdered by a monster he created, his daughter and his lab assistant continue his experiments. This feminist take on the mad scientist movie is a hybrid of the ’70s Hammer horror films’ infatuation with nudity and sadism and the golden age of Italian horror’s gothic period.

THE PHANTOM OF SOHO (WED 2 NOV, 6:15pm)
Franz Josef Gottlieb’s early-’60s swinging London Soho setting has a mysterious killer with golden gloves and a skull mask breathe terror into the nightlife community. A Scotland Yard detective has to stop this killer.
This movie may have pioneered the killer Point Of View shot.
