The Accountant: Review

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck – Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) is a math savant, also known at The Accountant. He uncooks the books many clients in the seedy underworld, and as he takes on a new client, the US Treasury Department and it’s agent Ray King (J.K. Simmons – Zootopia, Terminator Genisys) closes in on his activities.

As the body count begins to rise, Christian finds himself protecting Dana Cummings (Anna Kendrick – Into The Woods), a low-level bookkeeper who has stumbled upon a massive international scheme, that sets her up as a target for a host of killers and evil-doers. Kendrick brings her usual heartwarming charm to Dana, and although this does pretty much unnoticed by Christian (leading to a few awkward, yet rather humourous moments), he does notice something in her that brings him out of his shell, and propels him along a collision course with some of the toughest killers around.

Affleck goes all out in his portrayal of a high functioning autistic, including a few tense scenes showing his coping mechanisms, likely brought about by his overly-strict military father, who always puts discipline first.

The Accountant drifts between a tense thriller, and an all out action, adding small doses of humour at several intervals. And this mix is just right. A plot that will leave audiences guessing, with many story threads feeling rather circular, connecting many aspects of Christian’s past to his present, and so many chance (or not so must chance) encounters with people along the way. A good part of the film will leave viewers thinking, yet the action scenes are not lacking.

A fun, and engrossing film, with well-rounded characters, a great cast and entertaining story make for fun viewing.

The Accountant opens 28 October 2016 in South African cinemas.
