Detangling Whales
Once driven to the verge of extinction, Southern Right and other whale species have seen numbers make a dramatic recovery since given full protection in South African waters, their traditional breeding ground. But with the increase in numbers has come ever-increasing entanglements: whales caught in drifting pieces of fishing nets and ropes, rock lobster and octopus traps. If left entangled, they die a slow and excruciating death. Carte Blanche sets out to sea with the highly-trained volunteers doing the dangerous job of disentangling these enormous mammals.
