CyberWar Threat

In the midst of a deadly new arms race, the global CyberWar is heating up. And, the stakes are no longer limited to the virtual world of computers.

As internet connections multiply, so too do points of attack and risks to national security. Governments the world over are competing to dominate a new battlefield: cyberspace.

Already, highly sophisticated, stealthy computer programs can take over and even destroy the control systems that regulate everything from food factories to gas pipelines, power plants, and chemical facilities—even our cars.

Carte Blanche examines the murky realm of criminal and strategic hacking as we explore the chilling new reality of cyberwar in which no nation or individual is safe from attack.

Hacksaw Ridge : Review

The amazing, true story of a man who wanted to serve his country during World War II, but did not want to compromise his beliefs by using a weapon, or killing people. Army Medic Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield – The Amazing Spider-Man 2) served in the horrific Battle of Okinawa. He eventually became the first man in American history to receive the prestigious Medal of Honour, without ever firing a shot.

Garfield is the ideal actor to play Doss. He begs a like from the audience, and yet, while one understands his beliefs and desire to serve his country, one feels the frustration that must be felt by his fellow soldiers, as they suffer somewhat during training, because of Doss’s refusal to comply.

Hacksaw Ridge is a great story, and film, on two fronts. It tugs at the heart, as we bare witness to the tough trials that befall Doss, in life, in training, and in the eventual battle. His faith in God, is seemingly unwavering, and a testament for many. Yet with journey of faith playing out, we are treated to a harsh, hard-hitting, and at times sobering look at the realities of war, it’s kill-or-be-killed ethos, and one can but wonder how Doss was able to keep his cool, and become such a selfless hero.

There is no doubt that Hacksaw Ridge is a brilliant film. It scores top marks in many categories, and is one of the gripping tales of 2016. Without a doubt, there was a lot of care that went in to the making of the film. From casting, to the effects, stunts and cinematography.

Hacksaw Ridge takes us back, at the beginning of the story, to a time where life was simpler, and builds from there to a time where man had to stand up against tyranny and evil, his beliefs tested, and do what is right for his fellow mane.

Hacksaw Ridge opens 30 December 2016, in South African cinemas. A great film to watch over the holiday season.

Hot South African Heartthrobs Will Be Wingin’ It On M-Net

Hot guys will be Wingin’ It on M-Net in the New Year
Janez Vermeiren and Siv Ngesi join the M-Net family

In 2017, Sunday nights will sizzle even more on M-Net, channel 101 on DStv. In addition to firm favourite Carte Blanche and The Voice South Africa Season 2, whose iconic red chairs return to our screens on 29 January at 17:30, M-Net will be introducing more locally produced series to the channel. From 29 January viewers will also be able to jet off to exotic foreign cities at 17:00 with well-loved South African celebrities Janez Vermeiren and Siv Ngesi in the cheeky new travel and lifestyle show Wingin’ It.

With absolutely no plan, no itinerary and only 48 hours to see, taste and experience the best each far-flung location has to offer, Wingin’ It, is not your ordinary show in this popular genre, however. It’s a fast-paced plunge into the world’s most fascinating and eclectic destinations seen through the eyes of two diverse and intrinsically competitive best buddies.

“These heartthrobs certainly don’t visit the world’s run-of-the-mill travel brochure type of hot spots and tourist attractions,” says M-Net’s Head of Publicity, Lani Lombard. “They land in cities you might never have thought of exploring, or even heard of, but which may just, after you’ve seen their mischievous adventures, end up on your bucket list. It’s a great-fun-filled show that will put a smile on your face – and awaken the explorer in you.”

Janez and Siv will be Wingin’ It in places like Baku, Ho Chi Minh City, Bogota, La Paz and Kathmandu and will show you the lesser-known side of Istanbul, Bangkok, Tokyo, Mexico City, Havana and Reunion Island.

This dynamic duo, who have travelled the world, of course boast illustrious careers in the South African entertainment industry. Comedian and actor, Siv had a coveted role in Les Misérables, and is active on both stage and screen. His CV includes roles in films such as Invictus and Long Walk To Freedom as well as an appearance in the 2008 TV Movie 24. Janez has made regular trips to Europe and the East with his parents as a child and has been a feast for the eyes in many television programmes. Among others, he was the co-presenter on the show Top Travel, and has also starred in the magazine show, The Man Cave.

Now, in Wingin’ It, Siv and Janez will pack their bags to find out more about the cultural elements of lands far and wide, feast on an array of delicacies and tackle interesting activities –like getting a good scrub down in a Turkish bath in Istanbul, arm-wrestling with Olympic Champions in Baku, bumping into David Beckham in Bangkok and rubbing shoulders with Sumo giants in Tokyo.

Wingin’ It is produced by the production company Cheeky Media and will be on M-Net 101 from 29 January, Sundays at 17:00.

Inside Einstein’s Mind

One hundred years ago Albert Einstein made a mind-blowing discovery: what we feel as gravity is, in fact, the push and pull of space and time, itself. He called his idea “general relativity.” Today it’s still considered the most remarkable feat of thinking about nature to come from a single mind. Carte Blanche delves into one of the greatest scientific theories ever conceived and the man behind the theory of space, time and gravity.

Who Do You Choose To Sit #Sidebyside You For Some Great Movie Moments This Summer?

Share those ‘Big Experience, Big Emotion’ movie moments with someone special at Ster-Kinekor.

Special moments should be shared – and sharing those special movie moments are no exception. So, who are you going to choose to sit #SidebySide with you as you enjoy a feast of wonderful movie titles that Ster-Kinekor has lined up for the Summer season? It could be the special person in your life, or your family, or a group of friends… just choose your movie and decide who is best suited to share that movie moment with you!

Whatever your favourite kind of movie is, Ster-Kinekor is inviting you to share the experience – and all the emotions that go with that movie – with others. Maybe it’s that first ‘butterflies in the tummy’ excitement of a first date, or it’s a night out with the guys or sharing a special time with your besties, or enjoying some fun family time together… you get to choose the movie and you get to choose who you want to sit #SidebySide with.

#SidebySide for Family Fun…

The fun starts with some great kids’ movies – and there’s nothing stopping the kid in all of us from enjoying them too! These titles give us the chance to sit back, relax and just chill out with family and friends for a few hours – and isn’t that what being on holiday is all about? Pretend you are living the life on an exotic Polynesian island with the delightful new Disney animated film, Moana.

Or, follow the antics of man and beast on another exotic island as an outgoing parrot and his quirky animal companions befriend the marooned Robinson Crusoe in the animated Robinson Crusoe / The Wildlife Life. When their harmonious lives are disrupted by two savage cats, they discover the true power of friendship against all odds. Both these animation films are currently screening – side-by-side – at Ster-Kinekor cinemas nationally.

The youngsters – and the young at heart – have two more fabulous holiday fare to look out for. Staying with the world of animated animals, Sing serenades its way onto the big screen in 3D from Friday, 23 December. But, you can catch it first with special pre-screenings at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas for all shows, only on Friday, 16 December. A dapper koala, Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey), has one final chance to restore his fading theatre to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition… and five lead contestants emerge to battle it out, ‘Idols’-style!

Dancing its way onto the magical screen in the New Year, from Friday 06 January, is Ballerina. This 3D animation film is set in 1879 Paris, and tells the story of an orphaned girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina. She flees her rural Brittany for Paris, where she passes for someone else and accedes to the position of pupil at the Grand Opera house. The perfect movie to enjoy #SidebySide with your dance partner!

All-out action #SidebySide with the boys…

If hanging out with the boys is more your style, the choice of action-packed movies to watch #SidebySide include some of the most anticipated releases of the year. Things are hotting up in the code-defying Inferno starring Tom Hanks in Dan Brown’s latest thriller.

The Star Wars fans have been shining up their lightsabres in anticipation of this week’s release of the all-new epic adventure, Rogue One – A Star Wars Story, the first standalone film from the internationally successful Star Wars franchise. The film releases in South Africa on 15 December, a day before its US release and, to appreciate all the in-your-face special effects, this one is a must-see in IMAX, with its full-on IMAX 3D Experience.

If gaming is more your thing, make sure you know who is at your side before going to watch Assassin’s Creed from 21 December (in 2D and 3D): you don’t want to mix with the enemy – the all-powerful Templars – if you are an Assassin. Starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons, the battle for supremacy has begun…

Snuggle up #SidebySide for a special moment

First date, date night… there’s something special about watching a magical story unfolding on the big screen, and sharing it with that someone special in your life. If you need something comedic to break the ice, Ster-Kinekor has that in abundance this festive season, from the local take on the life of stand-up comedian featuring Rikus de Beer as Jonathan, to the hilarious, all-out riotous antics of the annual Office Christmas Party starring Jennifer Aniston. T.J. Miller and Jason Bateman!

We know it’s Almost Christmas when shop windows are ablaze with lights and colours and the angelic voices of choirs are heard singing Christmas carols, but it’s also a time of reflection and family relationships… and sometimes those are a little more complicated. This movie, with an all-star cast including Kimberly Elise, Danny Glover and Omar Epps, puts it all into perspective – with some unexpected consequences!

Why not arrange the perfect date-night to end the year off with a bang? Book the love seat in Ster-Kinekor’s luxurious Cine Prestige cinema, order in some delicious platters or coffee and cake, put your feet up, and let Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt do the rest… Passengers releases on 30 December and follows the couple, who are two passengers aboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. Or, catch the special pre-screening on 26 December, to recover from the over-indulgences of Christmas Day!

Also releasing on 30 December is the romantic comedy Why Him? with Bryan Cranston as the over-protective father, Ned Fleming, and James Franco as the over-the-top billionaire boyfriend, Laird Mayhew, to Stephanie, played by Zoey Deutch. It’s all about relationships…

This summer, the movie choices at Ster-Kinekor are endless, the people you can share them with is endless… so, just make sure you are #SidebySide the perfect match for each movie you watch – it’s up to you!

South African Film “The Wound” To Open THe Panorama Programme Of The Berlin International Film Festival

Just after celebrating its selection to have its world premiere in competition at the Sundance Film festival in the USA, the film-makers of the South African film The Wound, have received news that the film has been selected to open the Berlin International Film Festival’s Panorama section in February 2017.

Produced by Urucu Media, directed by John Trengove and co-written by Trengove, Thando Mgqolozana and Malusi Bengu , The Wound stars multi-talented musician and novelist, Nakhane Touré in his acting debut, with Bongile Mantsai and Niza Jay Ncoyini.

The Wound tells the story Xolani, a lonely Xhosa factory worker who joins the men of his community in the mountains of the Eastern Cape to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood. When a defiant initiate from the city discovers his best kept secret, Xolani’s entire existence begins to unravel.

Speaking from Cape Town, producer Elias Ribeiro said “We could not have wished for a stronger start for The Wound. We will have the spotlight in the two top festivals in North America and Europe, and that bodes well for its future, as Pyramide, our International Sales Agents will be representing the film at their booth inside the European Film Market in Berlin in February.”

The Berlin International Film Festival website describes the Panorama programme as a showcase of “new films by renowned directors, debut films and new discoveries. The selection of films provides insight on new directions in art house cinema. Traditionally, Auteur Films – movies with an individual signature – form the heart of the programme, and aims to take quality independent film out of its niche into the spotlight of the international market.”

“The fabrication of masculinity has long been a consistent theme in Panorama,” said the statement from the festival. “Producer Elias Ribeiro previously delighted festival audiences in Panorama 2015 with Necktie Youth.”

John Trengove commented: “I was interested in what happens when groups of men come together and organize themselves outside of society and the codes of their everyday lives. I wanted to show the intense emotional and physical exchanges that are possible in these spaces and how repressing strong feelings leads to a kind of toxicity and violence. As an outsider to this culture, it was important that I approach this story from the perspective of characters who are themselves outsiders, who struggle to conform to the status quo of which they are part.”

The Wound is a co-production between South Africa, Germany, The Netherlands and France and was shot on location in the northern region of South Africa. The film was developed with the assistance of The Hubert Bals Fund and ARTE International Prize. The Department of Trade and Industry and The National Film and Video Foundation as well as The World Cinema Fund supported production and the film pre-sold to broadcasters ARTE France and ZDF in Germany. The film’s intended release in South Africa is July 2017.
