FreeState’s Haemorrhaging Healthcare REPEAT

Last week Carte Blanche exposed a controversial stem cell unit at Pelonomi hospital. Despite having operated since June, last week the Medicines Control Council ordered the doctor running the unit to stop all treatments. Then the province’s Department of Health cancelled the controversial unit’s contract calling it a ’bad decision’ on their part. Over the past three years, Carte Blanche has uncovered widespread maladministration in the Free State’s public health sector. Little has changed. From a serious shortage of doctors, specialists and nurses to cases of medical negligence and the credibility of the University of the Free State Medical School hanging in the balance, is the Free State’s healthcare system on the brink of collapse?

Albino Terror

What has led the United Nations to declare that people with albinism—a congenital disorder characterized by the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes—are at risk of total extinction, unless radical action is taken to protect them? Carte Blanche meets people living with this disorder and with unimaginable fear, people for whom something as simple as going to school or venturing a little too far from home could see them pay the ultimate price?

Producer: Tarryn Crossman

Great Whites REPEAT

South Africa’s Great White shark population has plummeted to alarming numbers. A recent study revealed that there may be less than 530 Great Whites along our coastline, confirming fears that the species may be rapidly facing extinction. Carte Blanche asks: Are we doing enough to protect Great Whites?

Taxis behaving badly REPEAT

They’ve plugged the void in South Africa’s public transport market. But does this justify their lawless and dangerous behaviour on our roads? Dealing with congested roads and hot-headed motorists, Carte Blanche goes behind the wheel with the drivers who move over 65 percent of the nation in a daily race against time to experience the cut-throat taxi industry first-hand.
