Jason Bourne (DVD) : Review

Film

The latest outing of one of the most dangerous black ops members. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is drawn out of hiding, and teaming up with ex-CIA analyst Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles), in a thrill a minute race, with double crosses and those with their own agendas.

Rewatch value on such an action packed story, with so many main players, and an unpredictable plot, is very high. Watch it again, either to understand the story better, or just get lots on the thrills of the action and stunts. Fans of action, and of the Bourne series are sure to keep returning to watch again and again.

Disc

As for as the technical aspect of the main feature on the disc goes, this is good. Missing more than half the bonus features, is appalling. Out of seven, there are only three that are actually on the disc.

The disc does seem to take a little longer than average to begin, one placed in the player (whether PC or set-top box). After this, all else seems fine.

Video

Video is encoded at a high average bit rate, with no visible artefacts on screen. There is no colour bleed, and a fair amount of detail in the films several darker scenes. Compression holds up well in the many fast paced scenes and cuts.

Audio

Audio is encoded as a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack. Dialogue is clear via the centre speaker, with the front and surround packing their ample share. With all the on-screen action, the surrounds are given a pretty decent workout, further expanding the on-screen world for the viewer.

Navigation

Navigation is rather cryptic. The triangle symbol is most obvious, which plays the main title. A book icon for chapters. An asterisk icon takes you to a sub-menu for the bonus features. The loudspeaker icon for choosing between English or descriptive audio. And finally a square with lines, leading to a sub-menu where the English subtitles can be turned on or off.

The menu background on the main menu is comprised of a few short video cuts of the main film.

The chapter selection sub-menus comprise of a static menu, with four static, colour thumbnails. There are numbered, but not titled, so might take a bit of guesswork to find the exact spot in the film one is looking for.

If the disc is left on a sub-menu for a short period of time, it does revert back to the main menu. If left on the main menu for a period of time, the main title starts. This might be okay with some, but irritate others.

Bonus Features

There is an advert that auto-plays, for Harry Potter, at Universal Studios in Hollywood.

Then a trailer for The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon. This can be fast-forwarded, or skipped.

There is a sub-menu for bonus features, comprising of:

Bringing Back Bourne – presented by Matt Damon, it talks about the journey from the previous Bourne to this latest outing. A short look at how the film came to be, with some behind the scenes footage, and input from both cast and crew.

Las Vegas Showdown – comprising of Convention Chaos and Shutting Down The Strip. Both are a fun look at how some of the films most action packed, climactic sequences were filmed, again presented by Matt Damon, with insight from cast and crew.

These are all of decent length, and both fun and insightful to watch. Sure to thrill any film, action or Bourne fan.

These, however, are the only bonus features on the disc. While the DVD sleeve talks about seven in total, there are only these three. This is sure to anger and disappoint many a fan, who may have bought the disc for not just a fun action film, but all the additional features about how the film was made. Be aware of this before acquiring this.
