Assassins Creed : Review

When Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender – The Light Between Oceans, X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Days of Future Past) is pushed to explore some genetic memories of his ancestor Aguilar, and as he gains the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers along the way that he is a descendant from a long line of those who were a part of a secret Assassins society.

Assassin’s Creed has a feeling that hints at The Matrix. it has a futuristic aspect to it, and an aspect set in ancient times, where skill with a blade is key to survival. So while the future tale unfolds amidst the flashes of bright lights and computer screens, the one of ancient times mixes the art of movement and the martial arts to bring a spectacular setting, with some incredibly amazing stunts and fights.

As far as the cross from computer game to cinema screen goes, Assassin’s Creed is one of the best. There is story, and a gripping plot. While not following the game story too closely, it is not a requisite to have played, or even seen, the game to be able to follow the interesting, yet not overly complex, plot.

Lynch encounters Sofia (Marion Cotillard – Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues) and not too soon after, her father Rikkin (Jeremy Irons – Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), and it is at this point that things kick off as each of them pursues their own agenda in an attempt to fulfill their life’s work.

A game to screen crossover with such an accomplished cast is sure to be entertaining, and Assassin’s Creed delivers. Excellent performances by the leads, great cinematic settings, and a well rounded tale. There are sure to be game purists who would beg to differ, but this is an enjoyable film, and is sure to reignite interest in this game as a new generation becomes enthralled by the secret group, charged with their mission that has survived the ages.
