Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween (DVD) : Review

Film

Another in the series of movies from Tyler Perry. On this outing, Madea winds up in the middle of things when she spends Halloween fending off a bunch of supernatural spectres when asked to keep an eye on some teens who are too eager to get out and party.

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween falls somewhere in the no-man’s land between a silly children’s movie and a teen / adult story. It’s silly, and not in a good way, with adults overacting and pushing stereotypes. And while that might appeal to very young children, it contains enough adult content, reference and innuendo to be aimed at adults. The most likely target audience are those who are old enough, yet still act like kids.

As far as story goes, the plot is simple and serves merely to set up situations where the characters can act, or overact, in a silly manner. The dialogue on its own is excruciating, feeling so forced in an attempt to project character, personality, or coolness.

There are no scares in the film either, so older audiences shouldn’t expect any of the normal Halloween creeps, yet the younger audience are likely going to become bored all too quickly.

With so many of these films being slated in the reviews of both critics and the public, it’s a wonder how they ever get funding for more. Yet, they seem to be produced on a regular enough basis that one has to wonder how big an audience they actually have, and worry about said audience. This film is simply an insult to one’s intelligence, and the best Halloween advice to be given is to simply avoid this nonsense at all costs. Anyone would to a lot better with almost any other film in this genre, so save yourself the trouble.

Disc

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween is available now, to purchase on disc, in South Africa.

Video

Video is encoded at a decent bitrate. There are no visible artefacts on screen, with rich colours, and no colour bleed.

Viewers with the relevant hardware or software, who wish to scale up to a larger or higher resolution screen, should be able to do so.

Audio

Audio is encoded at a high average bitrate, with clear dialogue (even with the silly way the actors talk). There is not much user of the surround channels, but given the nature of this type of story, that is to be expected.

Navigation

Navigation is simple, with a static background image on the main menu, and some music.

There are options for a chapter selection, with sub-menus that contain chapter numbers and colour, motion thumbnails. There is also an audio selection sub-menu, allowing one to choose between 5.1 and 2.0 soundtracks.

Bonus Features

There are no bonus features, except for trailers for Hoender Met Die Rooi Skoene, Jou Romeo and Ballerina.

These can be fast forward, or skipped.
