Experience The South African Premier Of Kong: Skull Island As An Amazing Outdoor Cinema Experience

Chance to see the film FIRST – a week before its global release!

One of the biggest blockbusters of the year is Kong: Skull Island – and this is not only because its title character happens to be the biggest primate ever created. To give due credit to the enormity of this movie, Warner Bros. Pictures and Ster-Kinekor have announced a unique outdoor screening experience for the South African premiere of the film, a week before its global release on 10 March.

For one night only, on Thursday, 09 March, Joburgers are being treated to the movie premiere on a huge screen and surround sound, befitting to Kong, which will be set up on the top field of St Stithians College in Sandton for this premium cinema event.

The producers of Godzilla reimagine the origins of one the most powerful monster myths of all in Kong: Skull Island, from Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures and Tencent Pictures.

A compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer), the film tells the story of a diverse team of scientists, soldiers and adventurers uniting to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific, as dangerous as it is beautiful. Cut off from everything they know, the team ventures into the domain of the mighty Kong, igniting the ultimate battle between man and nature. As their mission of discovery becomes one of survival, they must fight to escape a primal Eden in which humanity does not belong.

The film is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Brie Larson and John C. Reilly. It has a 13V age restriction and the running time is 118 minutes. The film releases nationally at Ster-Kinekor’s IMAX, Cine Prestige, 3D and 2D cinemas on Friday, 10 March.

“As the country’s leading cinema chain, we are extremely excited to present the premiere of a movie the size of Kong: Skull Island as an alternative screening event. We are constantly striving to present innovative and new cinema offerings to our audiences, as an extension of our promise to deliver great moments,” says Motheo Matsau, Chief of Marketing and Sales of Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

“We believe this outdoor cinema experience will surpass our customers’ expectations, considering that we are hosting the premiere of the film at this event – a week before it hits our cinema screens.”

The event is being staged on the top field of St Stithians College in Sandton. Access to the venue is via the school’s entrance off Bram Fischer Drive, with gates opening at 17:30. The film’s screening starts at 19:30, and bookings are now open for this once-off outdoor cinema event.

The evening promises to be a wonderful mix of an outdoor cinema experience and a feast of delectable artisanal foods, craft beers and wine. Of course, Ster-Kinekor’s freshly popped popcorn and cold drinks will also be on sale to enjoy during the movie.

Tickets for this unique cinema event need to be pre-booked and paid for via the Ster-Kinekor website (www.sterkinekor.com – note the Ts & Cs) and cost R120.00 each. No tickets will be available for sale at the venue on the night of the premiere. The film carries a 13V age restriction so unfortunately no child under the age of 13 will be permitted into the venue to attend this event and watch the film.

Unlike a Ster-Kinekor cinema, there is no seating at the venue! Seating is unreserved, on a first come, first served basis and as such, the organisers encourage ticket-holders to arrive early to find a good spot and indulge in the delicious food and drinks that will be on sale throughout the evening – even while the movie is playing. Audiences should bring picnic blankets and low-style camping or beach chairs to enjoy the screening in comfort.

The state-of-the-art outdoor screen is massive – 15m wide and three-storeys high – so everyone will enjoy perfect line of sight to the screen from anywhere on the field. A rock concert-style surround sound system will be set up around the entire venue to do justice to this larger than life, monster movie event.

Due to the fact that this is a fully-catered and licenced event, unfortunately no food or drink may be brought onto the premises. “However,” says Matsau, “we are confident that everyone will find something to their liking amongst the array of food and drink vendors we have hand-picked for the evening.”

As a safety measure, the venue will operate as a cashless environment: the vendors are not able to process any cash payments but all bank cards will be accepted on the night.
