Demi Lovato, Joe Manganiello, Ariel Winter And Meghan Trainor To Celebrate World Premier Of “Smurfs: The Lost Village”

In celebration of tomorrow’s World Premiere of Smurfs: The Lost Village, the first-ever World Premiere of a film to be held in Culver City, the home of Sony Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation, the city of Culver City will be declared to be America’s Official Smurfs Village, with a street renamed for the three-apple-high heroes. As part of the celebration, Sony Pictures Animation will make a donation to the Culver City Department of Parks and Recreation. The theme of the premiere, “Give Back to Your Village,” follows the Smurfs’ timeless messages of peace and living in harmony.

The film premiere will be attended by the cast, including Demi Lovato (voice of Smurfette), Joe Manganiello (voice of Hefty Smurf), Ariel Winter (voice of SmurfLily), Jack McBrayer (voice of Clumsy Smurf), Danny Pudi (voice of Brainy Smurf), Meghan Trainor (voice of Melody Smurf and performer of the original song “I’m a Lady”), and Jeff Dunham (voice of Farmer Smurf), and by the filmmakers, including director Kelly Asbury, writers Stacey Harman and Pamela Ribon, and producers Jordan Kerner and Mary Ellen Bauder Andrews. Véronique Culliford, daughter of Pierre Culliford (also known as Peyo), creator of the Smurfs, will also be in attendance.

Joining them will be several dignitaries from Culver City, including Mayor Jim Clarke, Vice Mayor Jeff Cooper, Councilmember Göran Eriksson, City Attorney Carol Schwab, Police Chief Scott Bixby, Fire Battalion Chief Rob Kohlhepp, and CCUSD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joshua Arnold, as well as several Culver City businesses, who have given back to Culver City by “blue-tifying” their businesses to celebrate Culver City and the coming of Spring with the Smurfs, and schoolchildren, who have participated locally by planting flowers throughout the city.

The donation will be received by Daniel Hernandez, Culver City Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services.

Commenting on the announcement, Kristine Belson, president of Sony Pictures Animation, said, “Culver City is home to Sony Pictures – we shop locally and eat at all the amazing restaurants throughout Culver City; we participate in community and volunteer events; and have initiated and sustained many programs that support Culver City schools and the community. We could not be more thrilled to be part of what makes Culver City a great place to live and work – and tomorrow’s celebration is a wonderful way for us all to come together.”

Culver City Mayor Jim Clarke added, “We’re proud of our neighbors at Sony Pictures, who have always proven to be wonderful members of our community – we’re grateful for their donation and thrilled to be celebrating the World Premiere of Smurfs: The Lost Village with them. Culver City has been the Heart of Screenland for 100 years, and in that time, so many classic movies have been filmed here, but tomorrow will be the very first time that we have been honored to host a World Premiere. This event is a special occasion for us.”

Véronique Culliford added, “I’m so proud that Culver City has been named America’s Official Smurfs Village. Our friends at Sony Pictures have always welcomed us with open arms and it’s always been a wonderful pleasure to visit Culver City.”

Smurfs: The Lost Village opens Friday 31 March 2017 in South African cinemas. Read the SAMDB review of Smurfs: The Lost Village.

Film Review

Smurfs: The Lost Village : Review

An all new take on The Smurfs, and this time it’s fully animated. Smurfs. Living in their secret village, lead by Papa Smurf (Mandy Patinkin), life seems good, fun and routine. That is, until some Smurfs go wandering when they should have stayed in the safe confines of the village.

The Lost Village follows Smurfette (Demi Lovato), and friends Brainy (Danny Pudi – Star Trek: Beyond, Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Clumsy (Jack McBrayer) and Hefty (Joe Manganiello ) as they race to The Forbidden Forest, trying ever so hard to keep away from the wizard Gargamel (Rainn Wilson), and stumbling upon the biggest secret in Smurf history.

The totally new focus this film takes to telling the Smurf story, means it is devoid of any live characters. This does mean that much more can be done to create a very unique and magical environment for the characters to exist in, but it does feel as if it has taken away a little “something” from some of the characters. Azrael, Gargamel’s cat, is not as cute or entertaining as he was in the other films, but he does steal several scenes from his wizard master.

The animation is superb, and colourful, but the story feels ever so slightly linear. The Smurfs spot something, and the move to that location, the find something more, and move ahead again, meaning the film is likely targeted more at younger viewers, without too much for older audiences. Still a fun and entertaining story, just one that has a simple plot.

Smurfs: The Lost Village is a great film for the school holidays, and is sure to keep the young ones entertained, laughing and happy. The film opens Friday 31 March 2017 in South Africa.

Q&A With Going In Style Director Zack Braff

Going in Style, starring oscar winners Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby), Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules, Hannah and Her Sisters) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) team up as lifelong buddies Willie, Joe and Albert, who decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty.

Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money, in director Zach Braff’s comedy “Going in Style.”

Also starring are two-time Oscar nominee Ann-Margret (Tommy, Carnal Knowledge), Joey King (The Conjuring, Wish I Was Here), John Ortiz (“Kong: Skull Island”), Peter Serafinowicz (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), and Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”), with Oscar nominee Matt Dillon (“Crash”) and Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future” trilogy).

Zach Braff (“Garden State,” “Wish I Was Here”) directed from a screenplay by Oscar nominee Theodore Melfi (“Hidden Figures,” “St. Vincent”).

Going in Style is a remake of the 1979 film of the same name, directed then by Martin Brest, and starring George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasberg.

ZACH BRAFF (Director) Q&A

What attracted you to Going in Style?

There were many things. If it had been just a big, fun movie, I would have been intrigued, and then if you told me Ted Melfi wrote it, I would have been more intrigued. And Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin are probably my favorite actors. So I just couldn’t believe that New Line was interested in me directing the film.

What I’m really drawn to is a mix of comedy and heart, and that’s what we all wanted for Going in Style. We were all on the same page. I was thrilled when they asked me to direct it.

Working with these three iconic actors must have provided many unforgettable moments for you on set. But was there a particular scene that was especially memorable for you?

There are so many. I think one of the funniest scenes to shoot was in the aftermath of the guys attempting to rob a convenience store, and Michael and Morgan are attempting to escape the scene of the crime in an electric shopping cart. It was a pretty elaborate stunt with Morgan in a basket in the cart and Michael driving it. We shot it in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, which has a lot of traffic, through which the cart had to be driven. We had planned to use stunt doubles for Morgan and Michael for most of the scene, but they kept saying, “No, we can do that. We can do that.” They ended up doing almost every stunt in the sequence.

I was laughing almost the entire time we shot that scene. We had rigged the basket to accommodate Morgan and make sure he was comfortable. We did such a good job he didn’t want to get out of the basket. So Morgan spent the whole day just lounging in the basket like it was a comfortable chair.

You mentioned shooting in Williamsburg. Why was important to shoot on location in New York?

First of all, I love the crews here, and I wanted to avoid shooting on stages, where you can lose some realism. Also, we wanted to pay homage to the original [1979] Going in Style, directed by Martin Brest. We shot in many of the same neighborhoods took place in the same neighborhoods that were used in that film.

The film has a fun and relatable theme about these three guys joining forces to buck the system and get what’s rightfully theirs.

Audiences are having a lot of fun with that idea—of people getting what’s rightfully theirs. These guys have a firm morality; they don’t want a dime more than what’s owed them. In fact, they’re robbing the very bank that has their money.

Why was it important to add the love story between Alan Arkin’s character, Albert, and Ann-Margret’s Annie?

We wanted to show that people can find love at any age. That’s something you don’t see very often in today’s movies.

Albert is kind of a grumpy guy. He thinks he’s done with women—until Annie charms him back into dating. It’s interesting to me that Annie is the aggressor in that relationship. She is still interested in sex and in falling in love. They remind us that being a senior doesn’t mean you’ve lost that need for love and closeness.

Early in the film, there’s a big action scene in which Michael Caine’s character, Joe, witnesses a bank heist. Do you like shooting action?

It’s a lot of fun to shoot action scenes. I felt like a kid who had been given all the toys in the toy store. Before Going in Style, I had directed some action sequences, for Scrubs. But I had never before directed action on the scale of that bank robbery.

What do you hope audiences experience when they watch Going in Style?

This is the perfect film for family members to experience together. Going in Style has something for everybody. Ten year olds will have fun with it, as will their parents and grandparents. It’s my favorite kind of comedy, with an amazing cast, lots of laughs, as well as a big heart and even some social commentary.

Kickstart Your Career With An ACT Performing Arts Scholarship

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) is calling on young people with the dream of pursuing performing arts studies to apply for an ACT Scholarship.

Funded by the Nedbank Arts Affinity and the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO), and supported by The Market Theatre, the 2017 Scholarships Programme, strives to nurture young talent and provide tertiary education opportunities to young people with their sights set on pursuing performing arts training in 2018.

Aspirant young performers are invited to apply in one of the following categories; acting, dancing, singing, or musical theatre. Once registered online, hopefuls will be required to perform two pieces of their choice, within their chosen category, at an audition. Musical theatre applicants are encouraged to perform pieces that showcase their competency as a triple threat performer (singer, dancer and actor).

Auditions will be held in all nine provinces between late June and mid July 2017. ACT CEO Pieter Jacobs says this will ensure everyone is given an equal opportunity. “Over the years we have seen that exceptional talent is not only the preserve of those with access to development opportunities, and undertaking a national road trip to find the best talent has proved well worth it,” says Jacobs.

Since 2009, The ACT Scholarship Programme has awarded 23 scholars and students with over R2,3 million worth of tertiary education funding, Jacobs says that this year they look forward to continuing this legacy.

“It is tremendously rewarding to see previous recipients make their way into productions across the country,” he says. “To mention a few, Tankiso Mamabolo just finished a run as part of the Baxter Theatre’s production of Marat Sade and Arlin Bantam is starring in Rent at Joburg Theatre. This is testament to the valuable investment of our partners.”

Film Review

Ghost In The Shell : Review

Set in the near future, and with a history of anime film releases behind it, the live action Ghost in the Shell follow Major (Scarlett Johansson – Captain America: Civil War, The Jungle Book, Lucy), the first of her kind. Major is a human, saved from a terrible crash, and who has now been cyber-enhanced, to be a perfect soldier, devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals.

Ghost in the Shell is visually stunning, coupling stunts and action sequences with great cinematography. Add a talented cast, an engaging story, that is a bit easier for mainstream audiences to understand than predecessors of the same namesake.

Despite much controversy over the casting of Scarlett Johansson in a lead role of an inherently Japanese story, still does the character and story justice. The multi-award winning and nominated actress delivers a character with tough outer shell, yet with an underlying vulnerability as she seeks to find out who she really is, and who she was. The quieter, more tender moments of the film surface as Major seeks out her past and family, who believe her to be deceased.

Thoroughly entertaining, fun to watch, and an engrossing story, Ghost in the Shell is one for fans of anime, science fiction, and anyone looking to escape into a story with a difference.

it is unfortunate that there are so many issues in the cinemas these days, as previews were initially to be in Imax, doing justice to the incredible visuals of the film. However, this was not to be, and being relegated to a cinema where the 3D is too dark is not something that one would want. So the recommendation to cinema audiences, is to seek a large, bright screen to fully enjoy this action packed adventure, and to not accept a poor quality viewing in a location that is either technically not up to standard, and vote with their feet and only frequent those facilities that offer a decent quality experience.

Ghost in the Shell opens Friday 31 March 2017 in South African cinemas.

Coming In 2018 – Tomb Raider

Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, “Tomb Raider” is the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero. The film stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (“Ex Machina,” “The Danish Girl”) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (“The Wave”), with Oscar-winner Graham King (“The Departed”) producing under his GK Films banner. The film’s production began on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the wildly popular videogame franchise from Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal.

“Tomb Raider” also stars Dominic West (“Money Monster,” “300”), Walton Goggins (“The Hateful Eight,” “Django Unchained”) and Daniel Wu (AMC’s “Into the Badlands”).

Shooting on location in South Africa and the UK, Uthaug directs from a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The director’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography George Richmond (“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”); production designer Gary Freeman (“Maleficent”); Oscar-nominated editor Stuart Baird (“Skyfall,” “Gorillas in the Mist”); and costume designer Tim Wonsik (key costumer, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”).

“Tomb Raider” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by MGM.

Being a longtime fan of the game, it’s important to me to honor the Lara Croft legacy and capture that spirit. It’s great to know that there’s such a passionate global fan base for Lara and her world, and our commitment to that will be evident in our movie. What’s different about this “Tomb Raider” movie is that it’s an origin story for the big screen, focusing not only on Lara’s strength and physical accomplishments but her humanity. We see Lara as a young woman, smart and capable but largely unfocused, and follow her on a dangerous journey that will push her to her limits in every sense, and allow her to hone the skills she needs to ultimately become who she was meant to be. As Lara Croft, Alicia Vikander is brilliant. She brings great depth to a complex role that is both physically and emotionally demanding. We hope this film will delight fans around the world and add another intriguing chapter to the Tomb Raider story.

PRODUCER GRAHAM KING (The Departed, Blood Diamond)

I’m excited to be a part of this new Tomb Raider story, which introduces the origins of Lara Croft and delves into the humanity of this character. Alicia Vikander is a gifted actress that brings so much to this role. Our director, Roar Uthaug is extremely passionate and has an eye for scale as well as gritty realism. It’s been a wonderful experience shooting in various locations around South Africa and we hope that using these actual locations will give a grounded sense of reality. It’s our goal to make a film that will not only delight fans but enthrall a world-wide audience.
