Power Rangers : Review

It’s morphin’ time! Yes, the Power Rangers, that show from your childhood is now a full length motion picture! With a touch of origin story, four high-school kids are brought together through a set of convenient coincidences. Infused with ancient powers, they must now learn to harness those powers to defeat the evil Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks – The Lego Movie, Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1) and save the world from total annihilation.

Defeated a long time ago, and sacrificing himself to protect the powers that Rita so badly seeks, is Zordon (Bryan Cranston – Godzilla) becomes trainer to the new recruits: Jason the Red Ranger (Dacre Montgomery), Kimberly the Pink Ranger (Naomi Scott), Billy the Blue Ranger (RJ Cyler), Zack the Black Ranger (Ludi Lin) and Trini the Yellow Ranger (Becky G). Helped by the slightly excitable, and totally humorous Alpha 5 (voiced by Bill Hader – Inside Out, Sausage Party).

With a feature film budget, the Power Rangers have been brought into the twenty first century. The Suits and Zords have received an major upgrade. The film sticks to its roots though, respecting our cherished childhood memories, and yet doesn’t take itself too seriously leaving room for a lot of very funny scenes. Power Rangers is far funnier than one would expect, yet remaining respectful to its past (including a few cameo appearances by the original rangers).

A fun, action packed outing, and without an overly complicated story line, but a good dose of laughter. Power Rangers is thoroughly entertaining. As the transition from television show to big screen goes, the filmmakers have done a superb job. Keeping all the characteristics of the original series that will leave one with a feeling of nostalgia, and expanding those areas necessary to make for rather good film.

Power Rangers morphs onto the cinema screens in South Africa on 24 March 2017.
