When rookie officer Jon Baker (Dax Shepard) is teamed up with a hardened pro, Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Michael Peña – The Martian, Ant-Man) at the California Highway Patrol. But it is not long until Jon learns that Ponch is in fact an undercover federal agent, investigating a series of daring robberies, and the gang of perpetrators that may involved a bunch of crooked cops.
Based on the television show, CHiPs, from the late 70s, starring Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox, there is a fair dose of nostalgia in the film. There are a few key items that bring this into present times though, with a few naked photos doing the rounds (to be expected, with the rate everyone takes selfies these days) and a bit of swearing, that was sure not present in the original series.
Action fans will not be disappointed with the motorcycles and related stunts, a fair dose of fights and shootouts, and of course what would a fun film be without a good dose of humour.
CHIPS is thoroughly entertaining, and is sure to draw both fans of the show it is based off of, and introduce the two officers, Jon and Ponch, to a whole new generation and audience.
A plot with enough twists, so as not to be obvious, and a well rounded mix of cast, story and direction, CHIPS is a buddy cop movie, for all to enjoy.
CHIPS opens 24 March 2017 in South African cinemas, with laughs, action and an entertaining story.
