Kahn Morbee Assembles Strong Team For The Voice SA Live Shows

Coach Kahn Morbee picks four unique singers for The Voice SA’s live shows
… and coach Karen Zoid reveals her team’s first contender

In the first episode of The Voice SA Season 2’s gruelling new Knock-Out rounds, Parlotones front man Kahn Morbee – who produced the first winner of this prestigious television singing contest – had to choose the four singers to represent him in the live voting rounds. He picked an eclectic mix comprising soulful Information Systems graduate Zee Gqamana (23) from Port Elizabeth, the raspy-voiced cool cat Freddy Lalendle (23) from Pietermaritzburg, the inimitable comedian Fatman (40) from Bela Bela, who showed his serious side this week with a masterful rendition of the iconic Afrikaans song “Liefling”, and Craig Lucas (24) from Cape Town, who Kahn previously described as “the love child of Freddy Mercury and John Legend”.

These four talent will be singing for South Africa’s votes in a few weeks’ time, along with Amanda Faku (22) from Port Elizabeth, who was the first member of Karen Zoid’s team to make it through to the Live rounds.

“Kahn had to make some tough decisions, but ended up with a diverse group of singers who promise to be strong competition in the live rounds,” says M-Net’s Head of Publicity, Lani Lombard. “Now, the pertinent question is: will coaches Karen Zoid, Lira, and Bobby van Jaarsveld be able to compile a team that can outperform #TeamKahn at the public voting polls? Judging by the talent still lined-up for the remaining Knock-Outs, we’re in for vocal fireworks during this year’s bigger and better live shows at the Mosaiek Teatro in Fairland.”

While tickets to the live shows, starting on 21 May, will be available at Computicket from this week onwards, Karen, Lira and Bobby will finalise their teams during the next two episodes of the show (Sunday 6 and 13 May). These two episodes will feature the remaining Knock-Outs in which the eight talent in each coach’s team is narrowed down to four.

But how did Kahn decide who to take through to The Voice SA’s lives in tonight’s episode (Sunday, 30 April) and how did Amanda secure her position in #TeamKaren? Herewith a summary of all the dramatic events:

In an impressive episode showcasing incredible vocal performances from both the coaches and the talent alike, tonight’s show was bound to be emotional from the start. The coaches kicked off the episode with an epic rendition of the Queen classic “Don’t Stop Me Now”, before clearing the stage to make way for the talent in #TeamKahn. Coach Kahn called his eight vocalists to the stage tonight, and had the difficult task of pairing up his talent to sing against each other in each Knock-Out performance. The first pairing that Kahn settled on was between Cape Town’s Kirby Jo (23) and Zee Gqamana (23) from Port Elizabeth, due to the fact that both singers possess very “soulful” voices, according to their coach. Kahn told both ladies that he would be looking for which one of them interpreted their song the best, and brought the most accomplished performance to the stage. Kirby chose to sing the emotional Beyonce ballad “If I Were A Boy”, but struggled with her nerves and maintaining control of the song when it came to performing first. Zee took to the stage after Kirby with a local hit, Zonke’s “Jik Izinto”, and received high praise from all of the coaches. Both Bobby and Lira encouraged Kirby to never doubt herself because her nerves clearly got the better of her. With that, Kahn picked Information Systems Honours graduate Zee as his first talent for the Live shows.

The next two singers that Kahn chose to pit against each other were alternative performer Freddy Lalendle (23) from Kwa Zulu-Natal and petite powerhouse Al Petersen (28) from Cape Town. Both singers chose to go a little out of their comfort zones in their song choices, with Freddy picking rock song “Heathens” by 21 Pilots and Al selecting the Nelly classic “Hot In Here” – a rap song that was a big departure from her usual, more down-tempo style. “I have to challenge myself, as a way to grow as an artist,” Al reflected. Despite a flawless performance by Al, as well as gallantly coping with a mid-performance wardrobe malfunction, Kahn had to give the Knock-Out to enigmatic Freddy, as he just has a special something that Kahn believes will go far in the competition.

Kahn’s penultimate Knock-Out was between Economics graduate Craig Lucas (24) from Cape Town and Education student Mia Pretorius (20) from Potgietersrus. Mia’s rendition of “Not Ready To Make Nice” by Dixie Chicks had all of the coaches raving. Kahn told Mia that if she wasn’t signed by a record label the moment she leaves the show, he’d be amazed, as she is “ready to take the music business on as a full package”. Coach Karen also noted that she had no idea just what a consummate performer Mia was. But it was pop-rocker Craig, whose cover of FUN’s “We Are Young”, that had the coaches and the audience alike absolutely stunned. “You have the control and the soul,” Karen told Craig. “You left your blood and guts on that stage, what an incredible performance,” she continued. Kahn told Craig that if he kept performing like that, he could follow in Richard Stirton’s footsteps and win this competition. With that, Craig joined Zee and Freddy as Kahn’s pick for the Live shows.

The final Knock-Out for #TeamKahn was arguably the toughest for the coach. Music teacher Aston Wylie (23) from Gonubie was up against another music teacher, the larger-than-life Fatman (40) from Bela Bela. Both performers chose local songs for their Knock-Outs; Aston picked Arno Carsten’s anthemic “Another Universe” while Fatman chose the quintessential Afrikaans ballad “Liefling” by Ge Korsten, which blew everyone away with its sheer magnitude and vocal power. Aston – who Kahn stole from #TeamLira in the Battles – followed Fatman, and accompanied himself on the piano in a stripped down version of his song. Lira told Aston that it was lovely to see him in his element behind an instrument, but that the moment he left the piano and performed without it, his performance lost some of its shine. On the other hand, she told Fatman that his cover of “Liefling” was simply “brilliant.” Karen agreed and stated matter-of-factly that Fatman was better than Aston. Coach Kahn admitted to being very torn, but ultimately agreed with Karen Zoid and chose Fatman to round off his team for the Live shows and the public’s vote.

Once #TeamKahn had been concluded, it was time for the contenders in #TeamKaren to step up onto the stage, as Karen paired her first Knock-Out talent up: Amanda Faku (23) from Port Elizabeth and Rick Jansen (18) from Centurion – both talent that Karen stole from other teams during the Battle rounds. Amanda chose to sing “Nomvula” by local artist Nathi, while Rick opted for the fast-paced “Love Runs Out” by international pop rockers One Republic. Both talent did their songs justice, and Karen raved to Amanda that she is “a soul sister, Earth Mother who has the voice of a prophet. When you sing, it speaks to my soul,” Karen gushed. Likewise, she complimented Rick on doing a phenomenal job, and predicted that he has a bright musical career ahead of him, if he continues to work as hard and put himself out there, like he’s done on The Voice SA. Wishing Rick well, Karen announced that the first talent that she would be taking into the Live rounds of the show was Amanda.

Stars Shine On The Red Carpet At “Love By Chance” Movie Premier

Local and visiting celebrities were out in all their finery at last night’s Hyde Park Nu Metro premiere of the delightful comedy ‘Love by Chance’, a South African-US co-production starring local favourite Atandwa Kani, and the gorgeous Altovise Lawrence, winner of ‘Top Actor South Africa’, in the lead roles. Man of the moment Kani, who has just been cast in Marvel’s upcoming superhero film The Black Panther, flew to Johannesburg from New York just in time for the glitzy event.

Samad Davis, Altovise Lawrence, Atandwa Kani

Also on the red carpet at the state-of-the-art cinema complex were the film’s director Samad Davis, an award winning international film producer and director from the US, and three of the film’s American stars, actress and producer Terri J Vaughn, comedian Desi Banks and actress and author Ja’el Roberson.

Terri J Vaughn, Ja’el Robeson and Altovise Lawrence were all dressed by renowned local designers Quiteria & George, couturiers to A-List celebrities.

The film tells the story of two South African actors who are independently in America, trying to break into an extremely difficult and over saturated Hollywood industry. They find themselves in the Hollywood of the South, Atlanta, Georgia aka “Hotlanta,” following their dream, one audition after another. But nothing comes easy.

Director Davis describes ‘Love by Chance’ as a pioneering film because it brings together US and South African talent and bridges cultural and continental divides against the backdrop of a love story.

MC for the event was Dineo Moeketsi, who wore a gorgeous black number for the evening. She welcomed the US guests onto the red carpet and introduced the film to the audience. The South African producers of ‘Love by Chance’ Dumi Gumbi and Catharina Weinek were also in attendance.

Dineo Moeketsi

Gumbi recounted the story behind the making of the film: “We are extremely proud to host our American guests tonight. We met Samad at the premiere of our previous movie ‘Mrs Right Guy’, and he said he would like to work with us on a film that would bring together South African and American talent. A year later and here we are celebrating the wonderful cast and the great production team that made it all happen. This was our first movie together, but it will certainly not be our last.”

‘Love by Chance’ opens in South Africa on 5 May 2017, and is distributed by Indigenous Film Distribution.

Ster-Kinekor Rewrites The Month Of Love With The Release Of Two Local Love-fuelled Romcoms

ALL ABOUT LOVE and LOVE BY CHANCE set to get hearts racing…

Love is in the air… and on the big screen! And no, we have not wound back the calendar to February! But, with two new local films releasing on the circuit that feature love firmly at the centre of their storylines, it’s time to celebrate all the emotions that this four-letter word brings!

The release of both All About Love (from Friday, 21 April), and Love By Chance on Friday, 05 May, gives us as proud South Africans even more reason to feel good, as they are both romantic drama/comedies with a strong local flavour.

“As South Africa’s leading cinema exhibitor, Ster-Kinekor is once again showing its commitment to the local film industry and lending its support to the release of local films. We are especially excited to be the exclusive exhibitor to screen All About Love, and look forward to movie lovers filling up the cinemas once it releases,” says Motheo Matsau, Chief of Marketing and Sales of Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

“We are committed to marketing and screening local productions that tell our South African stories in their many different guises, stories that South Africans can relate to. Genres such as romcoms and romantic dramas perform particularly well at the box office and, spiced up with a good dollop of local flavour or twist, gives them even greater appeal with our local audiences.”

All About Love features a strong, all-African cast that gives the film an intriguing continental feel. Shot in and around the vibrant city of Johannesburg, this new romantic comedy explores the interesting, bitter-sweet and sometimes difficult, but always instructive, journeys of the heart.

The leading ladies are played by popular South African actress and flavour of the moment, Nomzamo Mbatha, alongside Katlego Danke and Zenande Mfenyana. Joining this local star-studded line-up are Richard Lukunku and Angela Sithole (also from South Africa), Chris Attoh (Ghana), Leroy Gopal (Zimbabwe) and Enyinna Nwigwe (Nigeria), among others.

Written and directed by Adze Ugah (Jacob’s Cross, Isibaya, Mrs Right Guy), the film also showcases the talents of Emmy Award-winning director of photography Nicholas Hofmeyr.

Following a night of red-carpet glamour at the film’s premiere at The Zone in Rosebank, Johannesburg, tonight (20 April), the film releases exclusively at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas around the country on Friday, 21 April. These include The Zone @Rosebank, Eastgate, Southgate, Newtown Junction and Festival Mall in Johannesburg, Maponya Mall in Soweto, Mall of Africa in Midrand, Sterland and Wonderpark in Pretoria, Mall of the North in Polokwane, Musgrave in Durban and Parow in Cape Town.

While All About Love features an exciting cross-continental collaboration, Love By Chance crosses the Atlantic Ocean to create a wonderful combination of South African and American talent. The film, directed and produced by Samad Davis, was shot in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Love By Chance is a romantic dramedy about two aspiring South African actors, played by Altovise Lawrence and Atandwa Kani, who independently are in America trying to make it big in the extremely difficult and over-saturated Hollywood industry… sound familiar? The characters meet by chance, but between the everyday struggle of auditioning, dealing with daily rejection, self-doubt, financial hardship, crazy friends and a mad dating scene, who actually has time for love?

As the film releases at Ster-Kinekor cinemas countrywide on Friday, 05 May, local audiences and fans alike will have the chance to find themselves ‘up close and personal’ with the popular stars. Altovise Lawrence and Atandwa Kani, together with other cast members, will be meeting and greeting fans at various cinemas and events, to sign autographs and take photographs. By posting these on social media including the Ster-Kinekor Facebook page, you could win a great hamper from leading make-up brand, MUD.

The stars will make an appearance at a special pre-screening of Love By Chance at The Zone in Rosebank on Wednesday, 03 May, so come on down and show your support for local cinema! If you are in Cape Town, head to N1 City on Friday, 05 May from 7.00pm to meet Altovise and Atandwa before the film’s screening at 8pm. The two lead actors will then be whisked back to Gauteng to meet fans at Sterland in Pretoria on Saturday, 06 May from 2pm.

Altovise Lawrence, the winner of the first season of Top Actor South Africa, stars as the main character, Bailey, alongside Atandwa Kani, son of South African actor, director, and playwright John Kani, together with a host of local and international stars, including Nicholas Nkuna (Top Actor South Africa) and Denise Zimba (Generations: The Legacy).

US co-stars include funny man Carl Anthony Payne II (Martin), Clifton Powell (Ray, Rush Hour, Grand Theft Auto), Terri J. Vaughn (Girldriends Getaway, Greenleaf and The Steve Harvey Show), E. Roger Mitchell (Flight, Equalizer) and Lil Zane (former rap superstar and actor).

Altovise is quoted, saying she has been fortunate to play complex characters this year, from Scandal to Blood Drive and now Love By Chance. “I am nervous and thrilled, but more than anything, I am grateful to land this role. Bailey is a complex character and I see a lot of myself in her. Having South Africans at the centre of this narrative is an important step in taking our talent to the world… I get to play alongside someone (Atandwa) who is no stranger to our screens and stages. We both studied drama at Wits University, and I trust his work and talent. We brought out the best in each other through our performances.”

The film’s local producers are Dumi Gumbi and Cati Weinek of the Ergo Company, who produced the recent films, Mrs Right Guy, and winner of Best Film at the 2016 Jozi Film Festival, Dora’s Peace. Production on the film started in October 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia, with all post production taking place in South Africa, making it a truly collaborative production between the producers and countries.

The film, distributed locally by Indigenous Film Distribution, releases on Friday, 05 May at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas countrywide.
