Official Trailer For Critically Acclaimed Krotoa Released

This remarkable drama tells the story of a feisty, bright, young eleven-year old girl (Charis Williams), who is removed from her close-knit Khoi tribe to serve Jan van Riebeeck (Armand Aucamp), her uncle’s trading partner. She is brought into the first Fort, established by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. There she grows into a visionary young woman, who assimilates the Dutch language and culture so well that she rises to become an influential interpreter for van Riebeeck, who became the first Governor of the Cape Colony. KROTOA (Crystal-Donna Roberts) ends up being rejected by her own Khoi people and destroyed by the Dutch, when she tries to find the middle way between the two cultures.

KROTOA has already won eight coveted awards, including an Award of Excellence at the International Film Festival for Women, Social Issues and Zero Discrimination; a Best of Show at the Depth of Field International Film Festival; a Platinum Award at the International Movie Awards; a Diamond Award at the Filmmakers World Festival; a Best of Show at the IndieFEST Film Awards; an Award of Excellence Special Mention: Women Filmmakers at the Accolade Global Film Competition; a World Platinum Award at the World Woman Awards and an award for Best Film at the Harlem International Film Festival held in New York. The movie has also received six official selections at international film festivals around the globe and was also included in the prestigious Female Eye Festival, which focuses on female filmmakers and stories about women.

The film, written by Kaye Ann Williams and Margaret Goldsmid, was created by a dynamic team of women, with acclaimed filmmaker Roberta Durrant as director and producer. Roberta is the creator of various award-winning South African television series and sitcoms, as well as the children’s film, Felix, which won seventeen international film awards.

KROTOA is inspired by real-life historical events. The scriptwriter tried to stay true to facts and deductions made about her life, having first made a documentary about KROTOA’s life with the help of various historians and cultural advisors like Dr. Yvette Abrahams, Prof Jatti Bredenkamp, Dr. Vertrees Malherbe and Ron Martin. The narrative feature film script is inspired by historical facts and deductions made about her life. Bradley van Sitters and Dorothea Davids advised in terms of the Khoisan language, Khoekhoegowab, which is one of the languages spoken in the film along with Afrikaans. “KROTOA’s story was created by a crew of dynamic women. It was imperative that her story not only be told by creatives from the community, but also from a female perspective. This feature film is the culmination of three years of research, scripting and, most importantly, actively engaging with top historians on the subject. Because of the importance of the story the film enjoyed the support and endorsement of The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), in association with M-Net and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Every effort was made to honour this heroin’s life and memory,” says Kaye Ann Williams, who created the script for the film as a result of a documentary she produced and directed on KROTOA’s life.

“In comparison to men, very few women have been acknowledged for having an impact on South African history. KROTOA (Eva) is the tragic heroin of this movie. It is not only important to tell her story because of all her great achievements, but it is also necessary to highlight that she was caught between two ways of life and constantly forced to choose between these two cultures. Identity, a sense of belonging and reconciliation are strong, universal themes in this powerful tale. Especially because the identity of someone, who is in between two cultures, is very relevant in any multicultural society,” Durrant adds.

Crystal-Donna Roberts, known for movies such as Endless River, Die Ongelooflike Avonture van Hanna Hoekom and Skeem; as well as television series like 7de Laan, Montana, Vallei van die Sluiers, Getroud met Rugby, Boland Moorde and Byl, plays KROTOA, while SAFTA acclaimed actor, Armand Aucamp – who is renowned for his work in Ballade vir ’n Enkeling and Die Boekklub – portrays the role of Jan van Riebeeck. Jacques Bessenger, Doen Lotz, Marcel van Heerden, Roeline Daneel, Brendon Daniels and Ernest St Clair also star in this critically acclaimed film.

KROTOA is a striking tale about a woman, who was prepared to sacrifice everything, to give birth to the great nation we all share today. It not only has a powerful message, which anyone can relate to, but also promises to take moviegoers on an epic adventure back in time.

KROTOA was produced by the SAFTA Award-winning film company, Penguin Films, in association with kykNET. The film will be released in cinemas, nationwide, on 4 August 2017, and is distributed by Ster-Kinekor Entertainment.

South Africa Now Has Largest 4DX Footprint In Africa

Nu Metro Cinemas has confirmed that it will be expanding its revolutionary chain of multi-sensory cinemas, with the launch of South Africa’s fifth 4DX cinema at Emperors Palace Hotel, Casino, Convention and Entertainment Resort at the beginning of June 2017.

4DX at Nu Metro Emperors Palace will feature an 84-seat cinema and will be opening to the public from Friday 9 June 2017. Entertainment at Emperors Palace will be taken to a whole new level: cinemagoers will no longer just watch movies, but can now significantly enhance their Nu Metro cinema outing with 4DX effects being added to target all senses (such as wind, motion, water spray, scent and lightning) in the state-of-the-art new cinema.

4DX is exclusive to Nu Metro Cinemas in South Africa. Driven by overwhelming public demand, this new 4DX cinema at Emperors Palace is the second such cinema for Johannesburg, the third for Gauteng and the fifth 4DX cinema in South Africa. South Africa has one of the highest densities of 4DX cinemas in the world, and Nu Metro is also pleased to offer moviegoers the cheapest 4DX tickets in the world.

The new 4DX cinema for the east of Johannesburg follows on the runaway success of 4DX at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront (Cape Town), The Pavilion (Durban), Hyde Park (Johannesburg) and, most recently, Menlyn Park (Pretoria).

“As one of our most popular cineplexes, Nu Metro at Emperors Palace is located within one of South Africa’s most popular tourist destinations. 4DX will give local moviegoers, and visitors wanting to experience this very unique and exclusive cinema outing, an opportunity to view movies on a whole different level. These world-class cinemas add a new dimension to popular blockbusters, to establish a one-of-a-kind trip to the movies. 4DX transports the viewer to get as close to experiencing the action on-screen as you can get!” explains Nitesh Matai, Nu Metro Cinemas: Managing Executive.

“We are incredibly excited about the launch of 4DX at Nu Metro Emperors Palace. This is the next step in cutting-edge cinematic technology and we’re thrilled to offer this extraordinary multi-sensory cinema experience as an additional entertainment option to our visitors”, comments Dave Milne, Peermont Hotel and Resort Executive.

Nu Metro’s 4DX cinemas feature seats that move in sync with every single scene of action on-screen, driven by a sophisticated, computerised Servo motoring system in each seat (not hydraulics), allowing for realistic movement simulations – from racing a crash-car to falling through the sky or drifting on the ocean. Cinemagoers can feel the wind in their hair, they can feel sprays of water or blasts of air hitting them from specialised effect systems installed in front of them, and they can smell the scent of the scenes on-screen – from flowers to burning rubber, the ocean or a fire – and be moved around in their seat to become a part of the movie itself.

4DX presents moviegoers with an absolute cinema experience, and Nu Metro is the only cinema chain locally to screen chart-topping blockbusters in this ground-breaking format. Recent hits such as Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, FAST & FURIOUS 8, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2 and currently PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: SALAZAR’S REVENGE literally come to life with 4DX. Future blockbusters lined up for 4DX include WONDER WOMAN and THE MUMMY. Filmmakers work in close conjunction with the 4DX team of innovators to encode effects that not only makes for an exciting, visceral movie joyride, but which also represents the creative vision of the film’s director and producers.

Nu Metro is the first and only cinema group to premier the revolutionary 4DX cinema format in Africa. 4DX pushes the limits of cinema to its ultimate pinnacle. This cutting-edge technology allows a motion picture presentation to be augmented with environmental effects such as seat motion, wind, fog, lights, and scents along with the standard video and audio. The 3D visuals on-screen, along with Dolby 7.1 surround sound, are enhanced to the max with effects targeted to submerge the viewer in a fully immersive sensory experience.

4DX delivers a multi-sensory experience like nothing seen, heard, felt or even smelt before. The new 4DX cinemas involve all five senses for consumers to enjoy an entertainment destination without comparison.

The films screened in 4DX are projected in HD/2D and Digital 3D on a silver curved wall-to-wall screen. Its audio system is the upgraded Dolby CP750 with 7.1 full surround sound. The Barco projector used in the cinema also uses an enhanced lamp for brighter picture in both 2D and 3D.

The Voice SA: Tender And Josh Saved

THE VOICE SA 2: Coaches save Tender and Josh!
Fans pick Craig and PJ. Who will be saved this week?

#TeamLira’s Tender Mavundla (35) from Port Shepstone and #TeamBobby’s Josh Ansley (31) from Johannesburg tonight joined #TeamKahn’s Fatman (40) and #TeamKaren’s Samantha Leonard (24) in the safe group that are already through to the next round of The Voice SA Season 2, after their coaches Bobby van Jaarsveld and Lira selected them out of the 8 extraordinary performances in tonight’s second Live Showstopper show at the Mosaïek Teatro in Fairland, Johannesburg.

And after last week’s performances, The Voice SA fans voted to keep #TeamKahn’s Craig Lucas (23) from Cape Town and #TeamKaren’s PJ Pretorius (26) from Secunda in the competition, which means that sadly the show had to say goodbye to #TeamKahn’s Freddy Lalendle (23) from Durban and Zee Gqamana (23) from Grahamstown, as well as #TeamKaren’s Lindo Sithole (23) from Pietermaritzburg and Amanda Faku (23) from Port Elizabeth.

Now it’s up to the fans to vote which final two singers to keep in the show this week, using their unique voting numbers:

From #TeamLira:
Bubbles Mnomiya (23) from Durban 09
Luke Lovemore (23) from Cape Town 10
Marissa Petzer (22) from Stilfontein 11

And from: #TeamBobby:
Caroline Brussow (32) from Bloemfontein 13
John James Janse van Rensburg (19) from Carletonville 14
Marco Basson (23) from Vanderbijlpark 16

#TeamLira was up first tonight with Marissa Petzer (22) from Stilfontein rocking out the Aerosmith classic, “Pink”. “To think this girl didn’t make it through past the blind auditions last season!” Karen marveled, and Kahn thought her rendition of the song was “sassy”.

The effervescent Bubbles Mnomiya (23) from Durban went for the funk with Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like”. “You’re so versatile, you can do anything,” Bobby noted, and Kahn said she was like the lyric from her song: “strawberry and champagne on ice”! “I’m so, so proud of you!” Coach Lira beamed.

Lira’s rocker, Capetonian Luke Lovemore (23), took the pace down a notch with the Lady Gaga ballad “Million Reasons”. Karen said that Luke’s is the kind of voice she likes, “and you’re such a heartthrob as well!” she grinned as Luke’s coach, Lira, dissolved into tears. “You don’t know the amount of work that goes into this moment,” she told the audience tearfully.

Lira’s oldest talent in the competition, Tender Mavundla (35) from Port Shepstone, brought out the big guns for her performance of the Tina Turner classic, “Proud Mary”. “It was like all the different genres of music wrapped into one two-minute song,” Kahn raved. “You have such a rebel heart, that’s what I love about you,” said an impressed Karen. “It was beautiful to watch that,” said a happy Lira.

#TeamBobby’s turn on the stage was lead by Johannesburg musical theatre alum Josh Ansley (31), showing off his impressive range with the timeless anthem “Eye of the Tiger”. Kahn thinks Josh’s nostalgic quality is what makes people like him. “You are ready to take it to the next level,” Lira told him, and Karen thought his voice is world class. “Not many people can do that – not in South Africa, not in the world, what you just did,” she said. “You are one of the best entertainers I’ve ever seen in my life,” his Coach, Bobby van Jaarsveld, praised.

Matriculant John James Janse van Rensburg (19) from Carletonville brought some soul to the party with his rendition of Shawn Mendes’ pop ballad “Treat You Better”. “So, so proud of you,” Karen raved. Lira called him the South African Justin Bieber but Kahn thought he was better: “You actually sing on stage,” he joked. Bobby told him it’s time to let go of his self-doubt now. “You’re going to go far,” he said.

Next up for #TeamBobby was the blonde lawyer and rugby-wife from Bloemfontein, Caroline Brussow (32), tackling Sia’s “Elastic Heart”. “You have powerful, roaring, strong vocal capability,” said an impressed Lira. “You have an elastic voice!” Karen exclaimed, and noted that Caroline is also the nicest person in the show. “I don’t think you’re human,” Kahn marveled.

And finally Vanderbijlpark engineer Marco Basson (23) chose Ed Sheeran’s pop standard “Castle on the Hill” for his first live performance. Kahn praised Marco’s sincerity and Karen said she thought he was spectacular. “You’re my favourite nerd!” his Coach Bobby praised him.

With Tender and Josh now also safe from this week’s vote, it is up to the fans to decide which final two singers to save with their votes. Only one member of each team can remain – four singers must be sent home in next week’s Showstopper episode.

Voting for #TeamLira and #TeamBobby’s’s singers opened directly after the show at 19:00 tonight and will close on Tuesday, 30 May at 22:00. Fans can vote for their favourite singers via WeChat (free) and SMS (standard rates apply). Terms and Conditions are available on
