Service delivery protests

From looting shops and burning a truck in Eldarado Park to violent altercations with police in Ennerdale, Gauteng is in the grip of service delivery protests. But why has the provincial government failed to respond to the plight of the poor? Carte Blanche examines the issues.

As South Africa continues to grapple with racial tension, this week Coligny in the North West became the focal point. Two farmers accused of the murder of a teenage boy allegedly over the theft of sunflowers, were granted bail. Some residents believe the killing was racially motivated. As tempers flared, a number of houses were burnt and property damaged by community members protesting their release. Carte Blanche analyses this developing story.

Granny runs Geneva

At 85, Deirdre Larkin has proven that age is just a number. She holds the half-marathon world record for women over eighty-five, and she’s also broken the South African 10km record for women over 70. After seeing her story on Carte Blanche, sponsors rushed to help Deidre run her first race in Europe. Now, she’s collected another title at the Geneva Half Marathon. Carte Blanche heads to Switzerland with this remarkable athlete.
