Tender Fraud

Through a clever tender fraud scam, small businesses are targeted to provide specialist equipment to government. The orders aren’t real. It’s just a ploy to get businesses to pay huge deposits. Cape drought

Western Cape dam levels have dropped to a critical 18% and with no sign of winter rain to bring much-needed relief, the province has been declared a disaster area. Emergency plans are hurriedly being put into place to supplement existing water supplies, while long-term solutions are being sought. The city has meanwhile urged residents to only use water for absolute essentials, but consumption still remains way above target levels. Carte Blanche asks: will the disaster declaration result in swift action or is it too little too late?

A cut above – SA’s sheep shearing champion

The sporting rivalry between South Africa, New Zealand and Australia is legendary but there’s one sport in which South Africa is the undisputed World Champion – blade sheep shearing. It’s a physically demanding sport but for titleholder Mayenzeke Shweni, sheep shearing is more than just a game. Carte Blanche meets a winner, who’s a cut above the rest.
