Spider-Man: Homecoming : Review

Taking place some months after the events portrayed in Captain America: Civil War, Peter Parker (Tom Holland – Locke) is being mentored by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr. – Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3). He seeks to find a balance in his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens, New York City while at night he seeks to be a crime fighter in the guise of his superhero alter ego Spider-Man. Soon a new threat emerges in the form of the Vulture (Michael Keaton – Minions, Need for Speed).

Saving us from the torture of yet again having to watch Peter endure another spider bite, or watching Ben Parker once again meet a violent end, Spider-Man: Homecoming takes us to a point where the young hero is known, both by cinema audiences, and the public living in his world. He is trying hard to make a difference, and impress Tony Stark, and dreams to be a part of the Avengers. School life is mundane though, after the events of Civil War.

The film feels as if aimed at a younger audience, but don’t let that mislead you, as it will keep audiences thoroughly engrossed. There is a bit more humour than one would have expected, some intricate action sequences that although over the top for any other film universe, feel right at home here.

Holland fully embraces his Spidey, bringing several interesting nuances to the character. Nuances that alter when confronted by either Stark or Vulture. There is a bit of a love story too, which adds a further dimension to the film, and another dimension to the many interconnected relationships between all the characters in the film, forming a web of love / hate, where each can spar, vying for superiority, and pushed by their own self-serving motives.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a fun installment for the webbed hero, playing out on the fringes of the Marvel Universe. Action, laughs, and engaging story.

The film releases 7 July 2017 in South African cinemas.
