48 Hour Film Project (Cape Town) – Call For Registrations

Registrations are now open for the 48 Hour Film Project, the world’s largest international timed short film festival which kicks-off on 1 September at the Cape Audio College in Cape Town.

The competition – which sees crews write, produce and direct a short film in 48 hours – continues to grow every year. The winning film goes on to Los Angeles to compete in the next leg of the competition at the Filmapalooza Film Festival. The top 10 films in Los Angeles will then be accepted and screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

The 48 Hour Film Project is organised by benchfilms and according to them, besides the international exposure promised by the competition, many of the short films have gone on to win at other festivals too.

The 2016 48HFP winner ‘First week’ by the Mason Brothers placed in the top 10 internationally, which saw their film screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

The challenge and exhilaration of making a short film in 48 hours is as rewarding as it is intense. Aside from making the films, every year there is great comradery among cast and crew, and new working relationships have been formed.

The competition continues to grow every year. Last year, 42 teams participated, with over 800 cast and crew involved. This year, benchfilms is hoping to draw 48 teams, a new record for Cape Town.

This year the competition will be giving away 2x two year bursary to the value of R280000, sponsored by City Varsity.

“This is really exciting as we have a great range of emerging filmmakers which enter every year and with prizes that include a 2 year diploma course at City Varsity, two lucky filmmakers can hone their craft and take that next important step into their careers.” – Hisham Samie, Cape Town City Producer.

Early bird entry fee is R1000 and the early bird deadline is the 7 August. Entries thereafter will need to pay R1200 to enter.
