Gentrifying the inner city?

Fattis Mansions once stood as one of the grandest apartment blocks in downtown Johannesburg, but with broken windows, no electricity and years of neglect, the building is in a severe state of decay.  Despite this, hundreds of people still called it home. Then in July this year, the Red Ants moved in, evicting residents and dumping all their belongings onto the streets. Developers say they want to return the apartment block to its former glory, but some residents claim they own the flats they lived in. Gentrifying the inner city, or an attack on the poor? Carte Blanche investigates.

Coal Wars

Desperate to maintain the value of their properties and their health, the people of Ogies on the Mpumalanga Highveld are taking on coal mines in a massive legal battle. Carte Blanche meets residents of the coal belt who claim government continues to issue mining licenses while their homes are being damaged through encroaching blasting and clouds of coal dust are causing serious respiratory illnesses.

Declining Adoption Numbers

In recent years, the rate of child adoptions in South Africa has declined substantially. Now the Department of Social Development in KZN is accused of deliberately slowing down the adoption process in the province, leaving hundreds of children stuck in places of safety without the hope of finding loving families. Carte Blanche explores a system in crisis.

Sardine Run

The sardine shoal migrating along the KZN coast was once described as the greatest on earth, resulting in the legendary annual sardine run. But stocks have drastically plummeted and over the past two years, fishermen have netted almost nothing. Carte Blanche asks: what’s happened to our sardines?

MKRSA: Lani And Louzel’s Farm-style Feast or Flop?

Teaser: My Kitchen Rules SA
Lani and Louzel: farm-style feast or flop?

This week on My Kitchen Rules SA, it’s the turn of mother-and-daughter duo Lani and Louzel to host their eight fellow competitors and celebrity guest judges David Higgs and J’Something at their generations-old family farm in Cradock, Eastern Cape. Will the slow pace of farm life encourage everyone to drop their guard, or will the competition remain as fierce as ever?

“I’m looking forward to serving good, hearty farm food,” Louzel revealed. But how will this pair take humble, rustic-style cooking to the next level?

“We’re going to pull out all of the stops and show them true Karoo hospitality, and bring a generation of knowledge to this competition,” Cradock mom Lani said confidently. Their fellow competitors are also looking forward to some typical South African farm-style cuisine: “I’m hoping for a warm farm stew or some delicious soup!” Claudia squealed. With her and Bruce’s score of 72 out of 100 firmly at the top of the leader board, they can sit back, relax and enjoy this Instant Restaurant – for now. Food dudes Rein and Rowan, on the other hand, will desperately be hoping that Lani and Louzel put a foot wrong in the kitchen this week, as they come closer to the reality of an elimination as their spot at the bottom of the board still hasn’t shifted.

But it will take more than one mistake from the close-knit Lani and Louzel to ease Rein and Rowan’s fears. This familial team has never been shy to share their extensive food knowledge around the table, as they are used to processing all of their own ingredients – from growing a vast array of vegetables in their garden to butchering their own meat on the farm. While they’re clearly au fait with the “farm to table” style of eating, it was revealed last week that this is clearly where their comfort zone starts and ends, however. While dining at Bruce and Claudia’s Instant Restaurant – which garnered the current top score on the leader board – it became clear that the Karoo ladies are not familiar with any type of fusion food. Could this be their downfall later in the competition?

As we’ve come to expect from Bloem besties Liz and Leanne, they will bring their critical eye to every detail of this week’s Instant Restaurant – not least because they too are farm girls from the Free State! Nothing seems to get by them, so Lani and Louzel will have to keep their eye firmly on the ball – and the prize – if they’re to meet the high expectations of their fellow home cooks and the judges.

My Kitchen Rules SA is broadcast on M-Net channel 101 every Sunday night at 18:00. Viewers can also visit www.mnet.tv/mkr to watch exclusive interviews with the judges and contestants, and follow all the breaking news and conversations around the show on Twitter @MNet / #MKRSA or on the official M-Net Facebook page.

The film, written by Kaye Ann Williams and Margaret Goldsmid and directed and produced by acclaimed filmmaker, Roberta Durrant, released in twenty-five local cinemas at the beginning of August 2017. Triple-bill For Ghanaian Classics Now On Showmax

three classic Ghanaian films, I Sing Of A Well, Sinking Sands and Ties That Bind, are now available to stream on Showmax in Africa.

Sinking Sands was named one of CNN’s ten ‘Must-see African Movies Of The 21st Century’

Writer/director Leila Djansi won Best Screenplay three years in a row at the Africa Movie Academy Awards for first I Sing Of A Well, then Sinking Sands, then Ties That Bind

Ama K. Abebrese won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress for Sinking Sands and was nominated for Ties That Bind.

Ghanaian writer/director Leila Djansi won Best Screenplay three years in a row at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) – for I Sing Of A Well in 2010, Sinking Sands in 2011, and Ties That Bind in 2012. Reviewing Ties That Bind, Indiewire hailed Djansi as an “ambitious filmmaker” who “crafts complex female characters so well” and “doesn’t shy away from female-driven, heavy and poignant themes that elicit intense emotions…”

Sinking Sands

Ama K. Ababrese won the Best Actress AMAA for her role in Sinking Sands. She plays Pabi, who is in a seemingly loving marriage until a domestic accident disfigures her husband Jimah (Jimmy Jean-Louis, aka The Haitian in Heroes). CNN included Sinking Sands as one of ten “Must-see African Movies Of The 21st Century,” with AMAA founder Peace Anyiam-Osigwe writing, “You cannot watch Sinking Sands and not be affected.” Sinking Sands also took home the AMAA for Best Make-up and four Ghana Movie Awards, including Best Picture

Ties That Bind

In Ties That Bind, Ababrese co-stars alongside Time 100 alumni and Nollywood star Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde (Last Flight to Abuja) and four-time Image Award winner Kimberley Elise (Diary of a Mad Black Women). They play women from different walks of life bound together by a similar pain: the loss of a child. The three women journey together to redemption, love, life and forgiveness as they renovate a dilapidated village clinic. Indiewire called it “emotionally rich… thought-provoking and engaging.” Ties That Bind also won Best Diaspora Film at San Diego Black Film Festival

I Sing Of A Well

Djansi’s debut feature, I Sing Of A Well, is a period drama about Soraya (Akofa E. Asiedu) and a hunter, Dume (Godwin Kotey), betrothed to each other but threatened by slave raiders, the Mali Empire of Mansa Musa, and the unwanted attention of their prince (JOT Agyeman). I Sing Of A Well won the BAFTA Los Angeles’ 2011 Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) Choice Prize, as well as AMAAs for Sound and Costume Design. PAFF founder Ayuko Babu called it “a wonderful piece of cinema… As a people, it represents who we are; where we have been; and where we are going. The film enriches our soul, stimulates our senses, and entertains our audiences with a compelling storyline.”

Ster-Kinekor And Vision Mission #OpenEyes Campaign Secures A Campaign Gold At #Loeries2017

Adding to its list of accolades, the much-awarded Ster-Kinekor and Vision Mission #OpenEyes campaign has received yet another global honour. This time it is in the form of a Campaign Gold Award in the Effective Creativity Category, announced at the prestigious 39th Loeries Creative Week in Durban (14 to 21 August 2017).

Ster-Kinekor and its creative agency FoxP2 Cape Town, were awarded for the heart-warming CSI campaign that saw a young man, Philani Twala, from Katlehong on the East Rand, receive a double corneal transplant – and a second chance to live his best life.

“Being recognised yet again for our heart-warming #OpenEyes campaign is a huge honour for the marketing team at Ster-Kinekor Theatres, and our creative agency, FoxP2, together with Ogilvy Public Relations JHB and Juice Content, whose integrated collaboration on this project resulted in this award-winning work,” says Motheo Matsau, Chief of Marketing and Sales at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

The 2016 #OpenEyes campaign told Philani’s story – for the past 10 years, he has been suffering from an eye condition that had made him almost completely blind. However, he could not afford the treatment to restore his vision – a costly double corneal transplant.

The #OpenEyes campaign followed Philani’s emotional and uplifting journey to regain his sight, following the sponsored operations. It then called on all South Africans to share in his journey by nominating the film he should watch as his first ever, big screen cinema experience. The film that was chosen was Avatar.

The #OpenEyes campaign forms part of Ster-Kinekor’s CSI programme Vision Mission, a dedicated programme focused on healthy eye care in children. Moviegoers can opt in and donate to the programme when booking tickets online or at the cinemas’ self-service terminals.

“CSI is not just a good to have activity for corporates, it’s a necessity because of the good impact it has on ordinary community members. We need to consistently do good for the good of others while being mindful of our deeds as an organisation,” motivates Matsau.

Matsau adds: “The #OpenEyes campaign placed another side of the movie industry in the spotlight. A side that focuses on the importance of healthy eyesight and vision as essential senses to appreciate the magic of the big screen. The campaign certainly got South Africans talking and voting for their favourite film for Philani to watch, while creating awareness for a plight that affects thousands of other ‘Philani’s’ across our country.”

The campaign recorded 50 million online impressions with an earned media figure of more than R14 million, more than twenty times the campaign budget. Twala was featured on the front page of The Star newspaper, among numerous print and online articles, and appeared on SABC News, Talk Radio 702 and Cape Talk, to mention a few broadcast platforms. During the campaign period, donations to Vision Mission increased by a staggering 60%.

Hear all about Philani’s journey

Philani will be at the Ster-Kinekor offices on Tuesday, 29 August 2017, to share more about life through his new set of eyes. For interview opportunities with Philane, please contact [Ogilvy Public Relations, Lineo Thakisi on 081 363 6872] no later than 25 August 2017.

  • Loerie 3 x Gold winner
  • Bookmarks Gold 3 x Silver winner

  • Creative Circle 2 x Ad of the Month

DStv Now Breaks Records

DStv Now has broken all previous records with the live stream of The Money Fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor. The daily live stream audience peaked at 40% above any previous high on the DStv Now platform, including those driven by events in traditional “prime time”.

Live sport has been one of the main drivers of growth for DStv Now. With its unrivalled and exclusive sports offering of up to 12 live streaming SuperSport channels, DStv Now has grown monthly usage more than 50% in just three months and has doubled in the last six months. To put the growth of live streaming on DStv Now in context, the Money Fight audience was 30 times larger than that for the Mayweather vs Pacquiao live stream just two years ago.

And it wasn’t just the main event which drove up audience numbers. Almost as many fans visited the live stream for the build-up and undercard as the main event, while many others used Catch Up in the DStv Now app to view the fight at a more civilized hour or watched the “All Access” documentary. The Fight coverage started at 03:00 CAT, with the main event starting just before 06:00 CAT. Users tuned in on their decoders, or the DStv Now website and APP (iOS and Android).

Worldwide, the fight between the boxing superstar and the MMA phenomenon was mostly available on a “pay per view” basis. However, SuperSport made sure DStv Premium customers across Sub-Saharan Africa could view The Fight live, at no extra cost.

And it’s not just once-off boxing spectaculars that are big on DStv Now. In the past two weekends, DStv Now users have had exclusive live streaming access to The Rugby Championship. The first of two games between South Africa and Argentina resulted in the second highest live streaming numbers seen to date on DStv’s online platforms. These exclusive live streaming events create unprecedented excitement and value for DStv Premium customers.

There have been many other drivers for the stellar growth in DStv Now usage. Nineteen additional live streaming channels have been added since April 2017, bringing the Premium offer to more than 70 channels, as well as making the service available to Compact and Compact Plus subscribers in recent months.

“Exclusive live sport is a key drawcard for our customers,” says Graeme Cumming, head of DStv Digital Media. “We were proud to be able to stream The Money Fight live to our Premium customers at no extra cost”.

DStv Now can be accessed via the app for tablets and smartphones, or online at now.dstv.com

The app is free to download for all DStv customers on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Data costs will apply when streaming content.
