“Krotoa” Lands International Film Distribution Deal

Critically acclaimed local box office hit, KROTOA, has just announced that it has joined forces with Shoreline Entertainment in California, to distribute this gripping tale to viewers across the globe.

The film, written by Kaye Ann Williams and Margaret Goldsmid and directed and produced by acclaimed filmmaker, Roberta Durrant, released in twenty-five local cinemas at the beginning of August 2017. It was well received by critics and grossed nearly half a million during its opening weekend. It is now entering its fifth week on the local circuit.

KROTOA, starring Crystal-Donna Roberts and Armand Aucamp, is a remarkable historical drama about a visionary young woman who had to sacrifice everything to give birth to the great nation we all share today. It has a powerful message and takes moviegoers on an epic real-life adventure back in time.

“It was very important to me to be part of this film and to learn more about an incredible woman. It has also opened my eyes to the discourse around this important subject,” says Roberts, who has been praised for her brilliant portrayal of the forgotten heroin.

Aside from its exceptional local achievements, the film has won eight coveted international awards and has received numerous selections from various film festivals, including the Montreal International Black Film Festival taking place from 27 September to 1 October 2017. It has also been selected as the gala opening night film at the Toronto South African Film Festival in October and Kaye Ann Williams and Crystal-Donna Roberts will be attending this wonderful occasion. “I am very excited about taking another South African film overseas and hope that it will be seen as something positive. I am very excited about everything that is currently happening in our film industry,” adds Roberts.

KROTOA was produced by the SAFTA Award-winning film company, Penguin Films, in association with kykNET, the NFVF and the Department of Trade and Industry. It also boasts impressive performances by actors such as Jacques Bessenger, Deon Lotz, Marcel van Heerden, Roeline Daneel, Brendan Daniels and Ernest St Clair.
