Gauteng Health

Recently furniture and office equipment were seized from the Gauteng Health Department to settle a medical negligence claim. This may seem like a particularly low point for the department, but it follows years of mismanagement and maladministration in the province. Meanwhile, more medical negligence claims are piling up for which the department cannot legally budget. Carte Blanche asks: is Gauteng health facing an imminent financial crisis?

High-tech Rabbiting

Now a new project involving a specially-trained border collie with a GPS-enabled collar and a state-of-the-art thermal imaging is helping to save this endangered animal. Carte Blanche joins the team working to prevent the total extinction of these elusive creatures.

David Patient

South African Aids activist David Patient died last week at the age of 56. Diagnosed as far back as 1983, Patient was an icon in the age of HIV stigma and an activist for LGBTQI rights. For 34 years he showed that it was possible to live ‘positively’ with HIV. Carte Blanche reflects on his remarkable will to survive and victory over the idea that his diagnosis was a death sentence.

Producer: Kate Barry
Presenter: Derek Watts
