The Emoji Movie : Review

So, they made The Emoji Movie. Those little yellow faces we send along with text, to convey emotions to the other parties receiving our message. Yet, what do you do with such a movie?

Well, Gene Meh (T.J. Miller – Deadpool, How To Train Your Dragon 2), a multi-expressional emoji, sets out on a journey to become a normal emoji. Gene, along the way and as most stories require, has to overcome personal issues, he meets a few friends along the way, in the guise of Hi-5 (James Corden – Trolls, Into The Woods), and Jailbreak (Anna Faris – 22 Jump Street, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs: 2). Each of whom has their own obstacles to overcome, but as a buddy movie goes, they need to find a way to work together, so each of their strengths can add to the group, and succeed.

With the help of his new friends, Gen tries to save the day. We get to meet a good many of the most used app emoji, including Gene’s parents Mel Meh (Steven Wright), Mary Meh (Jennifer Coolidge), Poop (Patrick Stewart – Logan, A Million Ways To Die In The West), Akiko Glitter (Christina Aguilera), Flamenca (Sofía Vergara – Wild Card), Spam (Rachael Ray), and as the Devil Steven (Sean Hayes – Monsters University), to name but a few of the more well known names lending their voice talent to the story. And, not forgetting the antagonist, Smiler (Maya Rudolph – CHiPS, The Angry Birds Movie), setting up in opposition to the goals of Gene and friends.

Now, The Emoji Movie. The idea alone begs many questions, and yet walking out, one would be forgiven for wondering, who is the movie is indeed aimed at. It’s not the very young, because the core story might go right over their head. Yet, it’s not the teen or adult market either, as this just feels way too silly. It’s a movie idea, looking for an audience, for an on-going craze that didn’t really need its own movie in the first place. Emojis might have done better had they featured as side characters for another story, much like the Minions from the Despicable Me series.

Worth perhaps an escape when really bored, else, wait for the film to come on TV. That way you can change channels when you get bored, and reach for your phone as your attention turns to your own emoji use.

The Emoji Movie opens 22 September 2017, in South African cinemas.

The Founder (DVD) : Review

Film

The Founder. A biographical drama, telling the story of Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton – American Assassin, Spider-Man: Homecoming). Ray is a salesman who has a chance encounter with two brothers, Dick (Nick Offerman – Sing, Hotel Transylvania 2) and Mac McDonald (John Carroll Lynch – Jackie). who have created an innovative fast food eatery, McDonald’s. The film shows how this was turned into the biggest restaurant business in the world, bringing together a combination of ambition, persistence and ruthlessness.

The history told in The Founder, about the global franchise that has likely been visited by the majority of the films viewers, is a rather stark look at the harsh reality of the cut-throat business world, where deals and the law are a chess game, and one has merely to out manoeuvre one’s opponent, whether they be friend or foe.

The totally ruthless portrayal of Ray, by Keaton, is a show of acting talent, as one grows to despise the character for his ways, yet admire him for his cunning and ideas.

The Founder is an engrossing film. It might not be one that would stand up to multiple views, but it is indeed one that many would find interesting, delivered in a well rounded package of cinema, acting, and story.

A great film, marred by a terrible disc. Try catch this somewhere, somehow. Just not on DVD, in the current state that it’s in.

Disc

Over all, the disc is of a poor technical quality, given the way the video seems to have been processed in the workflow of getting the film from cinema to DVD.

This is a great pity, as the main feature itself is a good, engrossing story, with some top talent.

The Founder is available now, to purchase in disc, in South Africa.

Video

Video for the main feature is encoded at a decent average bitrate, but there appears to be a big fault in the telecine process. It seems that the video for The Founder uses a telecine repeat method, making for an apparent slow frame rate, that looks as if it is somewhere between 15 and 20 frames per second. While technically the disc is a 25 FPS disc, this method of telecine, if it were indeed the method used, is one that should only be used when previewing discs, before they are sent out to be commercially pressed.

Whether this is the case, or not, the video appears to strobe, with movement being far from smooth, and on a subjective note, leads to some eye strain and a headache. Viewers with photo-sensitive epilepsy would to well to check before viewing this film.

All in all, this video encoding issue ruins the disc, and while it is still watchable, this is not without its own drawback, so be forewarned.

Perception of the slower apparent frame rate, or strobe effect is subjective, to a degree, and dependent on each persons own visual sensitivity.

Audio

Audio is presented in a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, with a stereo 2.0 downmix as an option. Audio is encoded at a high average bitrate.

Dialogue is clear via the centre speaker, with the weight of the soundtrack carried by the front channels. Use of the surrounds is infrequent, but this is understandable, given the genre of the film.

Navigation

Navigation comprises of a static main menu, with accompanying music. There are text menu options to play the main feature, for audio, and for chapters.

The audio menu leads to a sub-menu with text options to select 5.1 surround, or 2.0 stereo.

The Chapters link leads to sub-menus, with four motion, colour thumbnails each, for a total of twelve chapters. While the thumbnails are numbered, they are not labelled, and could have been a bit bigger, meaning there is an amount of guesswork when trying to navigate to a particular part of the main feature.

Bonus Features

There are no bonus features on the disc, except for trailers for Krotoa, Vaselinetjie, and The Promise which auto-play at the beginning of the disc.

These can be fast forward, or skipped, individually, but are not accessible again from any menu on the disc.

Coming Up On “My Kitchen Rules SA” This Week

Teaser: My Kitchen Rules SA
Eyebrows are raised as the second group of contestants head to Bloemfontein!

If fans thought the competition was tough in Group One of My Kitchen Rules SA, the second group of home cooks have started turning up the heat! In last Sunday’s episode of M-Net’s new local cooking show, it was a fresh start as five new teams stepped up to the plate. Leading the group were power moms Charnell and Kelly, whose Instant Restaurant décor elements impressed their competitors slightly more than their actual food.

The BFF duo opened up the leader board for Group 2 with a just-above-average score of 67 out of 100 from their fellow contestants and celebrity judges David Higgs and J’Something.

This week, the bubbly Group Two of home cooks are travelling to the City of Roses – Bloemfontein – for their second Instant Restaurant, where married couple of 10 years, Jamandi and Machiel will be attempting to spice things up in the kitchen and on their plates! Will their love of food – and each other – be enough to impress their fellow competitors and judges, or will they boil under the pressure that comes with time constraints and a hungry bunch of guests?

My Kitchen Rules SA is broadcast on M-Net channel 101 every Sunday night at 18:00. Viewers can also visit www.mnet.tv/mkr to watch exclusive interviews with the judges and contestants, and follow all the breaking news and conversations around the show on Twitter @MNet / #MKRSA or on the official M-Net Facebook page.

Coming Up On Carte Blanche – 24 September 2017

KPMG: The Unravelling

The so-called SARS Rogue Report, compiled by KPMG, had devastating consequences for the stability of the South African Revenue Services. Then the international auditing firm withdrew its findings, forcing eight executives and the CEO to resign in the midst of the crisis. But SARS insists that there’s nothing wrong with the controversial report. Carte Blanche analyses the damage.

Presenter: John Webb
Researcher: Laura Byrne

Missing Planes

We all think airliners are tracked with pin-point precision throughout the flight, but that’s not quite the case. On long haul flights over oceans, airliners vanish from radar for a few hours. Pilots radio their position to the airline’s operations team every hour, making this is the only way for airlines to know where their aircraft are. Consider also that airliners fly at speeds of nearly 850km/h. This results in a very large search area in the case of a missing aircraft. But, through ingenious, locally developed technology, missing planes like Malaysian Airlines flight 370 could be a thing of the past.

New York Rooftop Gardens

A farm in the middle of New York City. No space you say? A group of idealists not only developed the biggest rooftop farm in the US and probably the world, but managed to turn the initiative into a massive commercial venture. Carte Blanche meets the entrepreneurial individuals who turned a seemingly impossible left-field idea into a sky-high success.

Producer: Diana Lucas
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender

South Park Comes Of Age On Showmax

White People Renovating Houses, the first episode of South Park’s 21st season, is now on Showmax, with weekly episodes available fresh from the USA.

If the new season trailer above is anything to go by, the irreverent primary schoolers are in for one raucous 21st party of a season. Warning: it’s the official trailer, so in keeping with the show contains imagery that some viewers may find offensive.

Show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have said they’re moving away from the ‘Giant douche vs turd sandwich’ election commentary of the previous season towards one-off, episodic storylines and more kids-being-kids moments like Cartman messing with Butters.

But the description for the season premiere sounds like it could be set in Charlottesville, suggesting South Park is going to stay as relevant as ever, thanks in part to its famously quick production schedule. “Protesters armed with tiki torches and confederate flags take to the streets of South Park, as Randy comes to grips with what it means to be white in today’s society.”

South Park lost to Bob’s Burgers at last weekend’s Emmy Awards but has been on a serious roll: since being snubbed in 2012, the show came back to win in 2013 and has since been nominated four years in a row – making it five Emmy wins and seven nominations in the last 13 years.

Kingsman In 4DX One Week Before Other Cinemas

‘KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE’ in Nu Metro’s 4DX theatres from 22 September

In unprecedented news for local cinemas, Nu Metro has confirmed that KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE will be releasing in its multi-sensory 4DX theatres on Friday, 22 September – one week before the film’s general South African release and just in time for the Heritage Day long weekend. 4DX is exclusive to select Nu Metro cineplexes nationwide – an entertainment destination with impact, unlike anything in South Africa.

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE introduced the world to Kingsman – an independent, international intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion, whose ultimate goal is to keep the world safe. In KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE, our heroes face a new challenge. When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded. In a new adventure that tests their agents’ strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy, in order to save the world, something that’s becoming a bit of a habit for Eggsy…

4DX features full-length movies in live action – a ground-breaking cinematic experience that stimulates the senses using high-tech motion seats and special environmental effects including wind, fog, lightning, water, scents and lots more. These effects are synced perfectly with the action on-screen to create the most exhilarating, unmatched cinema outing – only at Nu Metro.

Channing Tatum, Halle Berry

“A fantastic way to enjoy KINGSMAN is to fully immerse your senses with 4DX,” said director Matthew Vaughn – one of many respected Hollywood directors now endorsing this revolutionary cinema format. A one-of-a-kind shoot-out scene, explosions and some of the most state-of-the-art spy technology moviegoers have ever seen are vividly brought to life in 4DX.

The trademark balance of stylish spy-themed action and sharp, witty humour from the first film is combined with even more spectacular action sequences for KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE.

The release of KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE in 4DX is the result of collaboration between Twentieth Century Fox and the 4DX Studios located in Hollywood. Through their partnership, 4DX was able to enhance the many aspects of the new KINGSMAN film: from the classic spy thriller elements – gun shots, lasers, fight scenes – to other subtle nuances of the action genre.

“The entire franchise delivers twists, turns and pulse-racing action, and KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE in the 4DX format maximizes movie-goers’ connection to the Kingsman and the Statesman, as they attempt to complete nearly impossible missions,” said Yoon Tae-yoon, Creative Director of 4DX.

With 4DX at Nu Metro, cinemagoers can feel the wind in their hair, they can feel sprays of water or blasts of air during sudden, unexpected action scenes; and they can smell the scent of the scenes on-screen – from flowers to cars burning the rubber on the road, gun smoke, fire, along with seat movement and other ambient effects.

“4DX gives moviegoers an opportunity to view movies on a whole different level. These world-class cinemas add a new dimension to popular blockbusters for a one-of-a-kind trip to the movies. 4DX transports the viewer to get as close to experiencing the action on-screen as you can get!” explains Nitesh Matai, Nu Metro Cinemas: Managing Executive.

Movies are now no longer bound by their visual and aural limits. 4DX is the next step in the movie-going evolution, taking audiences on a journey into the full feature film. Find 4DX at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront (Cape Town), The Pavilion (Durban), Menlyn Park (Pretoria), Hyde Park Corner (Johannesburg) and Emperors Palace (Johannesburg).

Experience KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE before rest of South Africa in 4DX at Nu Metro one week early: see, hear, and feel this spy thriller in a way no other cinema can replicate.
