Superheroes Made Real In 4DX

THOR: RAGNAROK, JUSTICE LEAGUE and STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI releasing in Nu Metro multi-sensory 4DX cinemas nationwide over the next two months

Nu Metro Cinemas has an impressive slate of movies lined up for their multi-sensory 4DX theatres nationwide for the remainder of 2017. THOR: RAGNAROK, JUSTICE LEAGUE and STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI are the blockbusters destined to make the earth move at the 4DX box office.

4DX makes superheroes come to life, and pushes the cinema experience to ground-breaking new levels of “real”. No other cinema format or experience provides a more immersive or realistic portrayal of what it feels like to be a superhero than the next-generation 4DX cinema format.

The latest superhero blockbuster from Marvel Studios, THOR: RAGNAROK, started showing in 4DX from this past Friday, 27 October 2017. 4DX’s high-tech motion seats and special environmental effects are tailor-made to amplify one of the world’s most popular big screen-characters to maximum effect, making moviegoers join the action-packed fight between good and evil on an epic scale (and in a different dimension).

Experience the power of Thor’s infamous hammer as it whizzes past moviegoers in the 4DX theatre. ‘Tilt and rotate’ effects are enabled through the motion seats in tandem with other effects (wind, fog, face water, strobe, vibrations, scent, side air, back kickers and lots more) to create point-of-view movie experiences from the hammer’s perspective.

Read the SAMDB review of Thor: Ragnarok.

Nu Metro has also confirmed that bookings for DC Comics’ JUSTICE LEAGUE have been opened. This highly-anticipated superhero showcase combines the forces of Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash on a scale never seen before. JUSTICE LEAGUE starts showing in Nu Metro’s 4DX theatres from 17 November.

As announced previously, Nu Metro pre-bookings are also already open for the 15 December global release of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (including special pre-release screenings on 14 December) – which will be Nu Metro’s tentpole release in 4DX for the holiday season.

My Kitchen Rules SA: Shock Elimination

My Kitchen Rules SA:
Top team Bruce and Claudia eliminated!

In the most shocking elimination of MKRSA to date, the top performing team in the series – husband and wife Bruce and Claudia – were the first pair of cooks to be eliminated from the Kitchen HQ rounds in tonight’s nail biting episode. Bruce, a martial arts world champion, and his master baker wife, impressed their fellow competitors and guest judges David Higgs and J’Something from the start of the series, but found themselves in a Sudden Death cook-off challenge against the weakest competitors in the show so far, Capetonian brothers-in-law OG and G, making their loss all the more unbelievable.

After coming last in the People’s Choice pizza challenge at the Johannesburg Zoo last week, Bruce and Claudia entered the brand new MKRSA Kitchen HQ tonight not knowing who they would be up against in their elimination cook-off. First, the rest of the competitors had to complete a “Steak, Sauce and Sides” challenge, but with only 30 minutes on the clock to cook the perfect medium-rare steaks and accompaniments for the judges, many of the teams started crumbling under the pressure that came with so little time on the clock.

“We lost a lot of time waiting for our pan to heat up on the stove,” a slightly flustered OG admitted as the steak challenge was nearing its end. While many teams harboured doubts about their dishes, the judges confirmed that OG and G – the “meat guys” of the competition – fell way below their usual standards and would be going up against Bruce and Claudia in the Sudden Death cook-off. “These guys still seem as cool as cucumbers and nothing seems to rattle them. That seriously worries me,” Claudia nervously admitted before going head-to-head with them.

The cook-off had no boundaries and the brief from the judges was clear: for both teams to simply cook to their strengths. While most people may have expected Bruce and Claudia to do their usual Asian-fusion style of cooking, they instead opted for paprika chicken with diced potatoes, red wine jus and purees of broccoli and beetroot. Unfortunately for perfectionist Bruce, he did not reduce the red wine jus sufficiently, giving it a bitter aftertaste. On the whole, Bruce and Claudia’s dish couldn’t stand up against OG and G’s perfectly cooked, flavour-packed lamb knuckle stew with onion and butter pap, pea and mint puree and glazed carrots.

“OG and G came up against very stiff competition and I want to commend them on doing an absolutely incredible job,” judge and award-winning chef David Higgs raved. With that, a stoic Bruce and emotional Claudia had to bid the Kitchen HQ and their fellow competitors farewell.

The remaining seven teams were visibly stunned by the surprise outcome of this week’s challenge, making them all the more nervous for what lies ahead next week, as they’re learning very quickly to always expect the unexpected in MKRSA…

My Kitchen Rules SA is broadcast on M-Net channel 101 every Sunday night at 18:00. Viewers can also visit www.mnet.tv/mkr to watch exclusive interviews with the judges and contestants, meet the new group of five couples and follow all the breaking news and conversations around the show on Twitter @MNet / #MKRSA or on the official M-Net Facebook page.

Coming Up On The Wedding Bashers This Week

Teaser: Coming up on The Wedding Bashers
Two sets of high school sweethearts tie the knot!

Coming up on M-Net’s heart-warming series The Wedding Bashers this week, celebrity wedding guests Cindy Nell, Denise Zimba, Siba Mtongana and Zavion Kotze attend high school sweethearts Nicollette and Hermish’s culture clash bash-with-a-twist on the Umhlanga beach front. These lovebirds enjoy an exquisite Hindu ceremony, but will the incorporation of more modern, Western wedding themes meet the Bashers’ standards on their very unique and personalised day? And what goes down in the parking lot that gets the celebrities excited?

The four Bashers then head North for the second pair of high school sweethearts’ nuptial celebrations, where teacher Ezel and hubby Henk tie the knot in a classic, rustic themed wedding. The pair chose the homely farm venue, Mooiplatsie, just outside of Pretoria, for their celebration. Their classic wedding preparations were under the competent control of Ezel, who let only one thing get the better of her – the budget!

As usual, each Basher will rate both weddings according to their various areas of expertise, namely the décor, food, fashion and entertainment at the end of the show. On top of the Bashers’ feedback, viewers can have their say too by rating all of the weddings on www.mnet.tv/weddingbashers, putting them in the running for some great weekly prizes, including R100 000 from 1st for women!

Tune in on Sunday, 29 October to catch the traditional Hindu celebration, and the rustic “I Do’s”.

The Wedding Bashers is produced by [sic] Entertainment and will be broadcast on M-Net channel 101 every Sunday night at 17:00. Viewers can also visit www.mnet.tv/weddingbashers to watch exclusive interviews with the Bashers and bridal couples, and follow all the breaking news and conversations around the show on Twitter @MNet / #WeddingBashers or on the official M-Net Facebook page.

Thor: Ragnarok : Review

The mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth – Ghostbusters, Blackhat) lands himself in a spot of trouble, imprisoned on a planet, and forced to partake in a deadly contest run by the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Independence Day: Resurgence), as gladiator. Matched up against none other than the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo – Now You See Me 2, Avengers: Age of Ultron), will he manage to win his freedom, will Loki (Tom Hiddleston – Kong: Skull Island, Crimson Peak) betray him once again, and can he gain the trust of one of the legendary Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and most important of all, save Asgard from the evil, risen Hela (Cate Blanchett – Cinderella, How to Train Your Dragon 2).

The film wastes no time getting started, diving right in to the action, but dragging a ton of humour along with it. By far one of the funniest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), there is no shortage of glib remarks, one-liners, or wisecracks.

As is often the case with the solo movie outings for any of the Avengers, this story remains rather contained and straight forward. Even with visiting several locations in the MCU, heading back to Asgard, and a brief stop off at Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch – Doctor StrangeZoolander 2), there are not too many twists or turns in the plot. Opting rather to take the viewer on an adventure, to entertain the audience, share a laugh, and expand on this segment of one of the more beloved characters in the entire collection of films.

Thor: Ragnarok is fun, it is entertaining, well worth a viewing (and not even because it is part of such an expansive universe). An outing for fans and casual viewers alike, and not to be missed.

As with all films in the MCU, stay for the end credits, as there are always a few short, additional scenes to catch.

Thor: Ragnarok opens 27 October 2017, in South African cinemas.

Producer: Anna-Maria van Niekerk and Marzanne van den Berg

Corporal punishment has been outlawed for over 20 years in South African schools, but it seems it is still the most prominent form of discipline. Churchill (DVD) : Review

Film

96 hours before the World War II invasion of Normandy, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Brian Cox – ) is being increasingly pushed aside by the other world leaders, and the allies. He has severe reservations about Operation Overlord, and fears for the many young lives that will be lost.

Churchill explores the many obstacles that great leader was to overcome, yet it by no means depicts a man who is seen as the greatest Briton of all time, in any positive light. Churchill himself is portrayed as an old oaf, drinking too much whiskey, and at loggerheads with many, including his wife Clemmie (Miranda Richardson), Dwight Eisenhower (John Slattery – Ant Man), and General Montgomery (Julian Wadham). South Africa’s own Jan Smuts (Richard Durden) seems to have old Winston’s back, acting as a go-between and helping keep the peace.

The filmmakers make no mention of where they got their material for this story, and for the most part it does not follow any other account of the man. A slow, meandering look at a man that is misrepresented, as some of the most poignant events of history play out in the background. Perhaps one to skip, unless you are in the mood for some study of acting.

Disc

Overall, the disc is of a decent technical quality, with an engrossing main feature, though lacking in any bonus material.

Churchill is available now, to purchase on disc, in South Africa.

Video

Video is encoded at a high average bitrate. There are no visible artefacts on screen, nor any perceivable colour bleed, save for the bottom of frame, when viewed on a large, high resolution screen. The film is presented in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Darker scenes maintain their detail.

Viewers with the relevant hardware or software could scale up to a larger, or higher resolution screen, should they wish.

Audio

Audio is encoded at a high average bitrate, and presented in a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. There is a secondary, downmix soundtrack presented in Dolby Digital 2.1

Dialogue is clear via the centre speaker, with the weight of the soundtrack carried via the front channels. Little use is made of the surround channels, but given the dramatic, dialogue centric nature of the film, and its settings, this does not come as much of a surprise.

Navigation

The main menu on the disc is simple, and easy to follow, with text links to play the main feature, or access the scenes sub-menu. The main menu has a static background, and no accompanying music.

The scenes sub-menus each contain four small, motion, colour thumbnails, for a total of twelve chapters. While these are numbered, they are not labelled, and so and amount of guesswork would be required in order to navigate to a particular part of the main film.

Bonus Features

There are no bonus features on the disc, except for trailers for The Lost City of Z, Krotoa, and Home Again. These autoplay at the beginning of the disc. While these can be individually fast-forward, or skipped, they can not be accessed again via the disc menu.
