KZN Killing Fields

Over the past few months, several people have been brutally gunned down in Kwazulu-Natal. At face value, the motives seem to be purely political, but is it that clear cut? Experts believe corruption, dodgy business deals and power struggles may well be behind some of the killings. Carte Blanche investigates.

Brain Cancer Hunters

The glioblastoma is an aggressive form of brain cancer and it’s very difficult to treat. The survival rate for patients beyond two years, is only 30 percent. But now, a landmark study could reveal the answers cancer researchers have been looking for. Scientists from the University of North Carolina have been able to convert skin cells into cancer-hunting stem cells which hone in and destroy tumours. Carte Blanche witnesses the life-saving possibilities of this medical breakthrough.

Cell Masts

There’s no denying that cell phones have vastly improved our lives, but cellular masts are mushrooming across suburbs with complete impunity. Several Johannesburg residents have opted to pack up and sell rather than live next to a mast, often losing hundreds of thousands in property value in the process. Carte Blanche asks: why are residents’ objections disregarded and towers built with no public participation process?

Report Card: Vaal

It’s been a year since Carte Blanche highlighted the problem of pollution from sewage entering the Vaal River system. Attempts were made to rectify the problem, but it seems the river is currently experiencing some of its worst pollution to date. Solid attempt or a dismal failure?

Producer: Anna-Maria van Niekerk and Marzanne van den Berg
Presenter: Claire Mawisa

KZN Principal

After years of poor matric results at Amangwane High School in rural KwaZulu-Natal, principal Nhlanhla Dube embarked on a turnaround strategy to improve results. This no-fee school, with a severe shortage of textbooks, a lack of basic resources and a small government subsidy, faced enormous challenges. But, by implementing a pioneering learning programme, students finally defied expectations. Carte Blanche goes into the classroom.
