My Kitchen Rules: Farewell Bloem Besties, Hello Semi-finals

My Kitchen Rules SA:
Liz and Leanne bid a sad farewell ahead of the semi-finals

In tonight’s nail-biting episode of My Kitchen Rules SA, the ever-coordinated Bloem Besties, Liz and Leanne, were eliminated from the competition. This means that Charnell and Kerry, Brent and Andrew, Lani and Louzel and Jamandi and Machiel are the four couples heading into the semi-finals of M-Net’s hit cooking series.

After last week’s disastrous pasta challenge, all five teams brought their A-game to tonight’s final People’s Choice event: a High Tea featuring some of Johannesburg’s most well-known socialites and celebrities, as they gathered in support of the Pink Drive early cancer awareness programme. Judges David Higgs and J’Something tasked the teams to create 90 savoury and 90 sweet canapes for the illustrious guests – including Edith Venter, Anele Mdoda, Jason Greer and The Voice SA finalists to name a few – and the teams did not disappoint, pulling out all of the stops to wow their audience.

Brent and Andrew achieved the top honours from the attendees by winning the majority of their votes, but for the first time in the competition, the judges did not agree with the public vote, making it clear that Charnell and Kerry’s canapes were their winning dishes of the night. Charnell and Kerry’s rounds of snoek mousse and orange gel, coupled with dessert canapes of passion fruit sponge rounds with crème patisserie, passion fruit gel and pistachio crumb had all of the flavour balances that the judges were looking for. Unfortunately Liz and Leanne’s “Sunday Lunch” roulades and angle cakes with citrus filling, swiss meringue and sugar art did not live up to their beautiful presentation, and were deemed the least impressive canapes of the day.

Since Brent and Andrew’s dishes were the people’s favourites, they had the advantage of choosing which team they would go up against in the first semi-final round of the show. They chose to square up against Charnell and Kerry, who, according to Brent and Andrew “are simply excellent cooks.” This means that the second semi-final of the competition will be between husband and wife team from Bloemfontein, Jamandi and Machiel, and Cradock’s mother and daughter duo Lani and Louzel.

What the teams do not know yet is that there will be a special panel of guest judges in the semi-finals of the competition. The Top 4 are sure to be blown away when they discover that they’ll not only be cooking for judges David Higgs and J’Something, but that they’ll be joined by none other than Chefs Lentswe Bhengu, Vanessa Marx, Reuben Riffel and Karen Dudley!

Who will be the first team to make it into the My Kitchen Rules SA finale? With only three more weeks before one team takes the winning title and a whopping R1 Million cash prize, nerves are about to be set on fire.

My Kitchen Rules SA is broadcast on M-Net channel 101 every Sunday night at 18:00.
