John, who is battling to find a receptive readership in New York for his graphic novels, rushes home to the town of his youth at the news that his mom needs urgent surgery to remove a brain tumour. He becomes embroiled in a web of emotional traumas.

Desmond Doss is a pacifist whose Christian beliefs preclude violence of any kind, so he becomes a combat medic. At Hacksaw Ridge, he shows exceptional bravery and saves the lives of at least 65 fellow soldiers.
