Star Wars: The Last Jedi : Review

Following on from The Force Awakens, Rey (Daisy Ridley – Murder on the Orient Express, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) begins her first foray into using the power that is growing within her. Setting out with the rest of the rebel team, Finn (John Boyega – The Circle), Leia (Carrie Fisher), and Poe (Oscar Isaac – Suburbicon, X-Men: Apocalypse), she seeks to enlist the help of Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill – Kingsman: The Secret Service), as evil once again peruses the alliance, and threatens the galaxy, and the dangerous Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) continues his dastardly quest of destruction.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi continues, and adds, to the latest trilogy, in the space saga. The story has the usual onslaught of space craft, and special effects, but at its heart there is a story. The film is also a lot funnier in several scenes, than one would expect. But do see it in a cinema with a decent screen. Still, all too many cinemas in South Africa have screens that are not aligned correctly, and that are way too dark. The cinematics of the film would be spoiled, and lost, on these many sub-standard setups.

As the title imparts, there is a nagging question as to whether the Jedi are at an end. Following the main saga’s previous instalment, the galaxy has all but lost these noble knights of The Force. Is Luke the last Jedi? Are there others? What of Rey? The musings of The Last Jedi’s plot, and ultimate goal of The Empire.

While fans will flock to the film, and it is indeed thoroughly enjoyable, audience members with a bit of discerning taste might feel there is a little something missing from this latest outing. One might wonder exactly what this is, but it feels as if the story and characters lack a little substance, that little extra that makes Star Wars some of the most anticipated releases of a year, and have some of cinemas greatest moments, in those films. The introduction of Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), as another important member of the rebel group, does go a long way to quell this feeling, but just a little more development, and story insight would likely have been welcomed.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens 15 December 2017 in South African cinemas, with a handful of screenings on the 14 at places such as the 4DX.

A fun, enjoyable film, and one that continues a great story that is massively relatable, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to be one of the festive season’s biggest hits.

Things Quickly Get Tense When SuzelleDIY And Tali_babes Co-star

Interest in Tali’s Wedding Diary, the first Showmax Original, is reaching fever pitch. Promotional videos for the show have generated nearly two million views in less than a month, with the trailer trending on YouTube for the week of its release. As Channel24 wrote last week, “Her show hasn’t even aired yet but Tali is already a star.”

While @Tali_babes has been an undeniable hit on Instagram, she’s still not as popular as SuzelleDIY, whose YouTube channel has more than 23 million views. Not that it’s a competition, of course…

SuzelleDIY has been very supportive of Tali_babes, following her on Instagram and inviting the bride-to-be onto her YouTube show for an episode called How To Make A DIY Wedding Cake, released today. But while Suzelle starts the episode praising Tali as “gorgeous” and “fabulous,” things quickly get tense as Tali and Suzelle disagree over, well, everything, really.

Suzelle and Tali are both played by actress Julia Anastasopoulos and co-created with her husband, Ari Kruger, who directs both shows.  Ari is also known as one of only three South African directors to have directed two Vimeo Staff Picks, the short films Jakkals13 and Focus.

Premiering this Thursday, 14 December 2017, Tali’s Wedding Diary follows a self-obsessed Sandton princess (Julia) who’s moved to Cape Town and is filming the build-up to her wedding to her property-agent fiance Darren (Anton Taylor, star of the popular web series Jozi Shore and the award-winning short Money, Keys, Phone).

At last week’s three-episode cast and crew premiere at The Labia in Cape Town, the packed audience was in hysterics from start to finish, with TVPlus tweeting afterwards, “Great news. Tali’s Wedding Diary is AWESOME. So funny… She’s a monster. Shrieking with horror and laughter… We can’t wait until 14 December to binge the rest…”

Tali’s Wedding Diary also stars Lara Lipschitz, who just won Best Actress at NYC Web Fest for her series Chin-Up; three-time Savannah Comics Choice nominee Glen Biderman-Pam; Fleur du Cap Best Actress winner and 2017 SAFTA nominee Kate Normington (Those Who Can’t); and two-time Fleur du Cap winner Guy De Lancey (The Pervert Laura). Look out for cameos from the likes of Top Billing host Lorna Maseko; Nic Smal from Derick Watts and the Sunday Blues; Nicci Saint Bruce (Push Push); members of Al Bairre; and, of course, Gina Collins (Marianne in SuzelleDIY).

Tali’s Wedding Diary is the debut Showmax Original, building on the success of this year’s acclaimed co-productions: iNumber Number with Mzansi Magic and Waterfront with kykNET. “We’ve already seen a spike in subscriptions directly linked to Tali’s Wedding Diary,” says Showmax Africa head Chris Savides. “It’s further confirmation that hyper-local content like this is a key differentiator for us.”

The eight-episode mockumentary will be available to binge-watch from this Thursday, 14 December 2017 on Showmax, which was just included in the App Store Best Of 2017 list. Save the date; as Tali says, “It’s going to be the best day of your life!”

4DX Celebrates Two Years With “The Last Jedi”

4DX MARKS 2ND ANNIVERSARY WITH RELEASE OF NEW ‘STAR WARS’ MOVIE

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ releases in all Nu Metro cineplexes this Friday – including multi-sensory 4DX, fully immersive Xtreme and ultra-luxurious VIP formats.

Johannesburg, 13 December 2017 – Nu Metro’s ground-breaking 4DX theatre-format celebrates its 2nd Anniversary in South Africa with the release of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI tomorrow from 20:00 – ahead of the film’s official global release this Friday, 15 December 2017.

One of this holiday season’s most highly-anticipated blockbusters, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, will be showing at all Nu Metro’s cineplexes nationwide – including their multi-sensory 4DX- and fully immersive Xtreme-theatres, 3D cinemas and Nu Metro’s luxurious “in-cinema dining” VIP-format.

Nu Metro opened Africa’s first ever 4DX theatre at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront with the release of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS in December 2015. South Africa now boasts six 4DX cinemas nationwide, exclusive to Nu Metro. The release of the sequel – STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – promises to take cinemagoers on a movie experience like no other with the next-generation 4DX format.

Nu Metro’s 4DX has expanded at a rapid pace across South Africa, and is now also supported by the world’s top film-producing studios. It is considered as a respected format, which significantly enhances the cinema experience and literally makes moviegoers a part of the Big Screen-action.

In Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of THE FORCE AWAKENS join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

What is 4DX?

4DX features full-length movies in live action – a revolutionary cinematic experience that stimulates the senses using high-tech motion seats and special environmental effects including wind, fog, lightning, water, scents and lots more. These effects are synced perfectly with the action on-screen to create the most exhilarating, unmatched cinema outing – only at Nu Metro.

With 4DX at Nu Metro, cinemagoers can feel the wind in their hair, they can feel sprays of water or blasts of air during sudden, unexpected action scenes; and they can smell the scent of the scenes on-screen – and be taken on an inter-galactic journey like no other.

Movies are now no longer bound by their visual and aural limits. 4DX is the next step in the movie-going evolution, taking audiences on a journey into the full feature film. Find 4DX at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront (Cape Town), The Pavilion (Durban), Menlyn Park (Pretoria), Hyde Park Corner (Johannesburg), Emperors Palace (Johannesburg) and the recently opened Cornubia Mall (Umhlanga/Mount Edgecombe).

What is Xtreme?

Xtreme at Nu Metro can simply be summed up as “Big Screens, Big Sound, Best Digital Quality”. Nu Metro’s Xtreme cinemas combine Premium Large Format screens, 360-degree sound, along with recliner seating, advanced RealD™ “Precision White Screen” (PWS) digital projection technology (ensuring brighter, crisper visuals on-screen) and 4K Ultra High Definition visuals.

Sound in Xtreme cinemas includes overhead speakers and a large array of speakers placed strategically throughout the cinema—a vast improvement on the limitations of traditional cinema sound, moving past the confines of “stereo” or “surround sound” channels. Dolby Atmos delivers full all-around sound in the Xtreme cinemas at Nu Metro; sound objects can literally be moved around in 3D space.

Find Xtreme at Nu Metro Clearwater Mall (Jhb), Menlyn Park (Pta), The Glen (Jhb), Canal Walk (CT), Ballito Junction (KZN North Coast) and the recently opened Cornubia Mall (Umhlanga/Mount Edgecombe).

What is VIP?

VIP upgrades the Nu Metro movie experience to first-class, with luxurious leather recliner seating, VIP lounge and an à la carte menu prepared in Nu Metro’s own kitchen by its executive chef (along with all the standard cinema catering fare – from popcorn to sodas, sweets and special combo offers). Select VIP cinemas also feature a licensed bar offering cocktails and other premium drink options.

Nu Metro VIP is the cinema experience of choice for discerning moviegoers who enjoy a cut above the regular cinema fare, with intimate in-cinema dining and a range of freshly prepared meals, hot and cold drinks. Meal and drink orders can be served in the VIP lounge or directly to cinemagoers in their comfy VIP seats.

All Nu Metro VIP cinemas feature world-class digital projection technology and the best in audio quality with full Dolby 7.1 sound in each cinema.
