Diski Star Delron Buckley Departs Dancing With The Stars SA

SA netballer Vanes-Mari du Toit survives to dance another day

Bafana Bafana winger Delron Buckley departed Dancing With The Stars SA this evening after his second consecutive Dance-Off in the bottom two pairs, as judges Bryan Watson, Debbie Turner, Tebogo Kgobokoe, and Jason Gilkison voted to keep netball star Vanes-Mari du Toit in the competition for another week.

It was the highly anticipated Movie Week theme this week as all of the celebrity dancers and their partners moved to the music of some of the world’s most popular silver screen hits. From Fame to Beauty and the Beast, the contestants pulled out all of the stops to make it a night to remember. Hoping that the force would be with him tonight, Delron performed the notorious Paso Doble to the iconic Star Wars theme music, but in the end his efforts didn’t translate. “I think there was too much in your head,” Tebogo Kgobokoe said of his performance.

Delron had started the competition very low on the leader board, with award-winning judge Jason Gilkison wanting to Red Card him for his messy footwork in Week 1, but the judges were impressed with his dedication and dramatic improvements week-on-week. Judge Jason raved that Delron’s energetic Charleston in Week 5 was his “breakthrough dance”. By last week’s Jive routine, judge Debbie Turner thought that Delron was “turning into a tiger”, but unfortunately this week’s Paso Doble proved a dance step too far.

Delron said the Dancing With The Stars SA experience had opened his eyes to the world of dance, “and I take my hat off to you guys,” he graciously told the judges. And he paid tribute to his wife Raphaela, who flew in from Durban every weekend to support him in this adventure.

The vote count and ranking of contestants is done according to the international format rules and was independently computed by Deloitte and Touche and confirmed against the vote results determined by M-Net.

Dancing again next week [25 March] will be:

  • Radio host and former Miss SA Liesl Laurie and her partner, Ryan Hammond,
  • Screen and stage personality Frank Opperman and his partner, Jeanné Swart,
  • Television actress Zola Nombona and her partner, Tebogo Mashilo,
  • Actor and model Eden Classens and his partner, Ash-Leigh Hunter,
  • Protea Netball Goal Shooter Vanes-Mari du Toit and her partner, Johannes Radebe,
  • Silver screen actress Juanita De Villers and her partner, Johan Dippenaar,

And singer and songwriter Connell Cruise and his partner, Marcella Solimeo, who achieved a highlight this week when three out of the four judges scored them a perfect 10, earning them a sensational 39 points out of a possible 40 for their James Bond-themed Rumba.
