It’s Survivor Week On M-Net

Get ready for Survivor Week on M-Net!

The sixth season of Survivor South Africa kicks off on Thursday, 3 May and to celebrate, M-Net channel 101 is turning this week into Survivor Week!

Starting in prime time tonight (Monday 30 April), M-Net will premiere nine of the 18 castaways’ profiles on air. Viewers will finally get to see what motivated these ordinary South Africans to enter the “greatest game on Earth”, and also why they think they can take home the title of Sole Survivor. On Tuesday 1 May, the remaining nine contestant profiles will be debuted in prime time on the channel so that by the time the first episode of Survivor South Africa: Philippines premieres on Thursday, 3 May at 19:00, fans will already be familiar with their new Survivor players.

In the sixth proudly South African instalment of this globally popular series, things will be done a little differently as M-Net continues to make strides to bring its viewers riveting, top-quality content. Thursday’s premiere episode of Survivor SA: Philippines will be a special 90 minute broadcast from 19:00 – 20:30, packed full of gruelling challenges, explosive social dynamics and, of course, the first elimination at Tribal Council. For the first time in Survivor SA history, the castaways will also have to Outwit, Outplay and Outlast their fellow contestants for a whopping 39 days, instead of the usual 27 day period.

But things aren’t only a little different on screen. For the first time ever, M-Net has created a Virtual Reality experience for fans of the show. By simply logging on to www.mnet.tv.survivorsa viewers can click through to a full 360 degree experience of the Survivor SA islands, living areas as well as each challenge site as the weeks progress. Fans can now see and experience the surroundings of the exotic Philippines exactly as the Survivor contestants did, and stumble upon some clues along the way that could put them in line to win some great prizes while doing so! The Virtual Reality experience will go live during the premiere episode of the show.

Make sure that you don’t miss tonight’s first instalment of Survivor Week during prime time, where you can get to know the following castaways:

Coming Up On Carte Blanche – 29 April 2018

On M-Net & M-Net HD [101], Sunday 29 APRIL 2018 at 19:00 & again on M-Net Plus 1 [901] at 20:00
Please note: this an extended 90-minute broadcast

Snake Park

Situated next to one of the world’s largest mine dumps, Snake Park near Soweto, is a community in distress with an unusually high number of Cerebral Palsy, respiratory diseases and inexplicable deformities in animals.  With a growing body of evidence linking toxic dust in mine dumps to various illnesses in nearby communities, it appears environmental issues are to blame for these and other medical conditions. The circumstantial evidence is compelling, but there are still no empirical studies to make conclusive links. Carte Blanche searches for answers.

Presenter: Macfarlane Moleli

Goldman Girls

The new nuclear deal pushed by former President Jacob Zuma would have been the largest procurement ever undertaken in South Africa. It was supposed to be transparent and affordable, but it was neither, as the Department of Energy drove the process in secret. But two small NGOs, Earthlife Africa and SAFCEI refused to accept that the trillion rand procurement was a done deal. Leading their campaign, were two activists forged in the struggle, Makoma Lekalakala and Liziwe Mcdaid. This week they received the international Goldman prize for stopping the State’s nuclear procurement in its tracks.

Kidnapping Spree

Kidnapping wealthy business owners is fast becoming the latest money-making operation for brutal, crime syndicates who demand multi-million rand ransoms.  While it appears highly organized syndicates are behind the big ransom kidnappings, there are also smaller or amateur groups carrying out “copy-cat” kidnappings. But as kidnappers become more daring and sophisticated, it gets increasingly difficult for police to make a breakthrough in any of the cases.  Carte Blanche investigates the modus operandi behind a spate of kidnappings that has gripped the South African Muslim Indian community.

On Top Of The World

The effects of global warming are very real, but nowhere are they more evident than in Greenland. The ice sheet in Greenland holds 8% of the world’s fresh water, but with rising temperatures, the ancient glaciers are crumbling and its vast ice cap melting. The consequences for the rest of the world could be devastating but for those living on the once icy island, it’s a welcome development.  Drought, brushfires and warm water fish have become the new normal and the farming and fishing industries are booming. Greenland’s waters are attracting more tuna, so much so that this now accounts for up to a quarter of the island’s exports.

Avengers: Infinity War : Review

It is the end game, and Thanos (Josh Brolin – Everest, Old Boy) is moving forward with his plans to collect all six of the infinity stones, leading to devastation and death across the universe.

Standing between Thanons, and total ruin, are The Avengers, along with their allies, of near and far, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), T’Challa / Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman – Black Panther) and the armies of Wakanda, and Thor (Chris Hemsworth – Thor: Ragnarok, Ghostbusters). And not forgetting Heimdall (Idris Elba – Star Trek: Beyond, The Jungle Book), and Wong (Benedict Wong – The Martian, Kick-Ass 2), helper to Dr. Strange.

Rounding up the Avengers team are Tony Stark / Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr. – Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron), Bruce Banner / Hulk (Mark Ruffalo – Now You See Me), Same Wilson / Falcon (Anthony Mackie – Triple 9, The Night Before), James Rhodes / War Machine (Don Cheadle), and Peter Parker / Spider-Man (Tom Holland – Spider-Man: Homecoming, Locke), with the team calling in the help of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans – Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man), and Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson – Ghost in the Shell, Sing), and seeking out Vision (Paul Bettany – Transcendence) and Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen – Godzilla). Of course, Loki (Tom Hiddleston – Kong: Skull Island, Crimson Peak) is there too.

The Guardians of the Galaxy lend their assistance, with Peter Quill / Star-Lord (Chris Pratt – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Passengers), Gamora (Zoe Saldana ), Drax (Dave Bautista – Marauders), Rocket (Bradley Cooper – War Dogs, American Sniper), Groot (Vin Diesel – The Fate of the Furious, xXx: Return of Xander Cage), and Mantis (Pom Klementieff – ), and with the help of Nebula (Karen Gillan – Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, The Circle).

And in this plethora of characters and stars, there are many brief cameos, with The Collector (Benicio Del Toro – Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Eitri (Peter Dinklage – The Angry Birds Movie, Pixels) to name but a few.

Avengers: Infinity War brings together the culminations of ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). A story that began back in 2008 with Iron Man, with the first Avengers movie following in 2012. Bringing all the various characters from many movies, into one showdown. And while the greater a viewers knowledge of the universe as a whole, the more enjoyment and understanding one would garner from the current incarnation, it is not necessary to have seen all, or even most, of the previous films. A basic knowledge of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, would stand one in good stead as background to Infinity War.

As a film, Infinity War has an engrossing, thrilling, and adventurous story. The talented ensemble cast brings much character depth to each hero and villain. The cinematic settings provide eye-popping visual effects and scenery, to satisfy the senses.

With the film being a showdown, all bets are off, and anyone and everyone is at risk of death, a change in loyalty, or perhaps worse. And yet, as one waits for the post-credit scene, processing the events, and changes to the MCU, on also wonders how might the many burning questions one would have, be answered. Or even if they will be any time soon enough to satisfy the cinematic appetite.

One thing to consider when heading out for a fun night with friends or family, is to be sure to view Infinity War in a cinema that has both hardware and staff who are willing, and able, to actually screen the film correctly. Too many cinemas in South Africa lack this, meaning the audience are left with a screen that is far too dark, causing them to miss out on many finer details, if not entire story points, in darker scenes.

Avengers: Infinity War, a fun film, that has been long awaited, and a film that can be enjoyed by a vast audience, from all sectors of society, and walks of life.

Avengers: Infinity War opens 26 April 2018, in South African cinemas.

M-Net Launches Local Wildlife Series

M-Net launches proudly South African wildlife series The Wild Ones

M-Net channel 101 has announced that it is launching a brand new local wildlife series entitled The Wild Ones. The proudly South African series, which covers a variety of ecological topics, will debut on the channel on Sunday, 6 May at 15:00.

Produced by Homebrew Films, which has previously created numerous wildlife series for both local and international distributors, The Wild Ones comprises 13 episodes and will take viewers on a never-before-seen journey predominantly focused on wildlife stories from within South Africa’s beautiful borders.

“The content covered The Wild Ones is not simply of a wildlife documentary nature; this series tells exquisite stories that will move and uplift our viewers every week,” explains M-Net’s Director of Channels Jan du Plessis. “In partnering with the experienced team at Homebrew Films, we are bringing more top-quality, heart-warming local content to M-Net’s Sunday offering.”

The Wild Ones comes as M-Net continues to expand and broaden its local productions slate. It is the first local wildlife show acquired by M-Net in over a decade. The series will include some emotionally-charged and inspirational episodes set in a local rhino sanctuary before taking a deep dive into the magical and mysterious world of marine life. There will also be episodes dedicated to bigger beasts, friends that fly as well as other success stories from special wildlife initiatives across Africa.

The premiere episode on Sunday, 6 May is a once-off special focusing on all the exotic, weird and dangerous inhabitants of the islands surrounding El Nido in the Palawan province of the Philippines – the same location where M-Net filmed its 6th season of Survivor SA earlier this year. Viewers can thus expect a tantalising glimpse into the types of creepy crawlies that the South African castaways would have been on high alert for during the show which premieres in the same week on Thursday, 3 May.

  • Episode 1: The wildlife of El Nido, Philippines

Award Rules Approved Fro 91st Oscars®

Campaign Regulations Updated For New Awards Season

The Academy’s Board of Governors has approved Oscars® rules and campaign regulations for the 91st Academy Awards®.

Submission deadlines for awards eligibility have been changed.  There is now one submission deadline – Monday, October 1, 2018 – for the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Animated Short Film and Live Action Short Film categories.  The submission deadline for Best Picture and all other categories is Thursday, November 15, by 5 p.m. PT.

In the Music categories, all members of the Music Branch will view films eligible for Original Score and film clips of eligible Original Songs and vote in a preliminary round to produce a shortlist of 15 titles in each category using the preferential voting system.  Five nominees for Original Score and five nominees for Original Song will then be chosen by branch members in a second round of balloting also using preferential voting.

In the Documentary Feature category, films that have won a qualifying award at a competitive film festival will be eligible for Academy Awards consideration regardless of any prior public exhibition or distribution by nontheatrical means.  The Documentary Feature Qualifying Festival List will be available later this spring.  Furthermore, the critic review eligibility requirement has been expanded to include additional New York- and Los Angeles-based publications.

To align with credits eligibility in the Best Picture category, rules in both the Animated Feature Film and Documentary Feature categories have been updated to allow for more than one producer to be designated as a nominee.

In a procedural change, members of the Visual Effects Branch Nominating Committee will now be able to stream bake-off reels from the shortlisted films or attend satellite bake-off screenings and vote online.  Previously, committee members were only able to vote in person at the Academy’s Visual Effects Bake-off in Los Angeles.

Other amendments to the rules include standard date changes and other “housekeeping” adjustments.

Rules are reviewed annually by individual branch and category committees.  The Awards and Events Committee then reviews all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the Board of Governors for approval.

Updated campaign regulations, which specify how companies and individuals may promote to Academy members any movies and achievements eligible for the 91st Academy Awards, are also presented to the Board of Governors for approval.

For the first time, studios, distributors and filmmakers will be required to use an Academy-approved mailing house to send sanctioned awards materials for eligible films to Academy members.  Each approved mailing house will be provided with an official list of Academy members who have opted-in along with their contact information to facilitate both physical and digital mailings.

Additionally, the number of post-nominations screenings with a filmmaker Q&A is now limited to a maximum of four regardless of category or country in which the event takes place.  This rule eliminates the two additional screenings currently allowed for Documentary and Foreign Language Film nominees.

For the complete 91st Academy Awards rules, visit oscars.org/rules.

The 91st Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.  The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (DVD) : Review

Film

Four high school kids discover an old video game console, while in detention on afternoon, and upon trying a game cartridge, they are literally drawn into the game’s jungle setting becoming the adult avatars they chose, as Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson – The Fate of the FuriousMoana), Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan – The CircleGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), and Moose Finbar (Kevin Hart – The Secret Life of PetsRide Along).

The third instalment, yet second film to hold the Jumanji title, is fun, hilarious, and a great adventure. There is a great deal of rewatch value, as the humour comes thick and fast.

The pop-culture references are fun to spot, interspersed throughout a rather engrossing story. An enjoyable film indeed.

Read the full SAMDB review of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Disc

Overall, the disc is of a good technical quality, with a fun, enjoyable movie as the main feature.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is available now, to purchase on disc, in South Africa.

Video

Video is encoded at a high average bitrate, with no visible artefacts on-screen. There is no visible colour bleed, and colours in most scenes, as needed, are vibrant. Detail in darker scenes is good too.

Video for the bonus features is also encoded at a high average bitrate, a change from most discs where these would be encoded at a lower bitrate to save space for the main feature.

Audio

Audio on the disc is encoded in a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, and encoded at a high average bitrate. Dialogue is clear via the centre speaker. There is a great amount of use of the surround channels, serving to further draw the viewer into the on-screen action, and expand the cinematic world.

Audio for the previews is also presented in a 5.1 mix, with the bonus material having only a 2.0 mix.

Navigation

Navigation is simple, and easy to follow. The main menu is static, with accompanying music. The menu items are text links, with options to play the main feature, languages, scene selections, and special features.

The languages sub-menu has a text list of audio languages to choose from, with three additional sub-menus from there from which to pick the desired subtitle language.

The scene selection sub-menus each have four large, static, colour thumbnails, for a total of sixteen chapters. There is no way to jump directly to any particular page, with the disc only allowing the viewer to page forward or backwards between the scene selection sub-menus. A small inconvenience, which could have been laid out in the menu system a little better.

The special features sub-menu has a text list of the various bonus materials.

Bonus Features

Gag Reel – A two minutes video showing a few of the slip-ups on set, and the cast goofing about in some takes. Worth a look and a laugh.

Journey Through The Jungle: The Making Of Jumanji – A fourteen minute featurette lead by the character Nigel, showing behind the scenes footage, the input from cast and crew on the making of this comedic adventure.

The video provides much insight, and interesting facts, which would not only prove useful to budding filmmakers, but be of interesting to the average viewer alike. A great addition to a great disc.

Meet The Players: A heroic Cast – Just over five minutes, this featurette shows the viewer some opinions on the cast and movie, by the cast.

They cast share insight into their characters, with some more behind the scenes footage. Another fun addition to the disc.

Attack Of The Rhinos! – A very short clip on the making of one of those more intense action sequences in the film, and how the cinematic visuals were created. An interesting addition, for viewers and filmmakers.

Jumanji, Jumanji Music Video –  Jack Black and Nick Jonas surprise the cast with a new theme song, and accompanying music video. But it’s rather cringeworthy, and must be seen to be believed. A good laugh.

Previews – Access to the original trailers that autoplay at the beginning of the disc. A link such as this is so easy to implement, yet is so seldom part of a disc menu.

The trailers are for Peter Rabbit, The Emoji Movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming. These autoplay at the beginning of the disc, and can be individually fast-forward, or skipped. These can also be accessed again via the disc navigation menu.

Packaging

Packaging for the disc is standard, with a title, poster and main cast names listed on the front. The back has a short synopsis, a few stills from the main feature, and a listing of the bonus features. There are also the usual technical details and logos.

The Road To Mecca – Must Close 19 May – The Fugard

Athol Fugard’s
The Road to Mecca
Final extension – must close 19 May

Eric Abraham presents this Fugard Theatre production of Athol Fugard’s The Road to Mecca, in honour of the iconic playwright’s 85th year. Directed by Greg Karvellas (The Fugard’s Shakespeare in Love, Clybourne Park, The Father, Bad Jews), the production stars Sandra Prinsloo, Marius Weyers and Emily Child.

Inspired by Helen Martins, who lived in Nieu-Bethesda and created the now famous Owl House – which is designated a provincial heritage site – The Road to Mecca is the story of a woman’s desire for personal and artistic freedom within the narrow confines of a conservative and highly religious community in the Karoo in early seventies apartheid South Africa.
