Five Fingers For Marseilles To Release In USA

South Africa’s first and much anticipated western ‘Five Fingers for Marseilles’ opens nationwide at cinemas tomorrow, 6 April.

While South Africans will be first to see Five Fingers for Marseilles, the fast-paced action film will also be released in the USA on 7 September, starting in New York and Los Angeles, before moving to an additional 15 American cities.

“We are thrilled to be working with the team that produced the Oscar winning films ‘Precious’ and ‘The Paperboy’ starring Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, David Oyelowo. This is excellent news as it gives the film, which has fairly universal ideas and themes, access to a global cinema audience.” said writer-producer Sean Drummond.

Post the USA theatrical release it will also be made available on Amazon Prime, Amazon’s exclusive streaming video on demand service, increasing its reach even further.  ‘Five Fingers for Marseilles’ has also secured releases in Japan and Scandinavia, with more to follow.

‘Five Fingers for Marseilles’ tells the story of a group of young men (the ‘Five Fingers’) who stand up to brutal police oppression in Marseilles, a town in the rugged badlands of the Eastern Cape.  Tau, one of the Five Fingers, kills two policemen and is sentenced to 20 years in prison. When he is released, the embittered ‘Lion of Marseilles’ discovers his comrades are now in prominent positions in the town. But there’s also a vicious new threat afoot, prompting Tau to reform the Five Fingers, take on old allies and new enemies.

“The film is hitting all the right notes with reviewers who have praised its cast, screenplay, directing and cinematography,” says Helen Kuun of Indigenous Film Distribution. “It’s not only action-packed and visually exquisite, but it also makes some incisive comments on the socio-political context in South Africa right now.”

The cast includes Vuyo Dabula, Hamilton Dhlamini, Zethu Dlomo, Kenneth Nkosi, Mduduzi Mabaso, Aubrey Poolo, Lizwi Vilakazi, Warren Masemola, Dean Fourie, Anthony Oseyemi, Brendon Daniels and Jerry Mofokeng. Cast by acclaimed casting director Moonyeenn Lee, the film also features people from local Eastern Cape communities in supporting roles, and introduces to the big screen talented newcomers Toka Mtabane, Vuyo Novokoza, Ntsika Tiyo, Sibusiso Bottoman, Abongile Sithole, and Qhawe Soroshi.

‘Five Fingers for Marseilles’ was awarded Best South African Film in Development at the Durban FilmMart’s finance forum in 2013. It was produced by Drummond and Matthews’ Be Phat Motel Film Company and Yaron Schwartzman and Asger Hussain of Game 7 Films, in association with Stage 5 Films and Above the Clouds. Schwartzman and Hussain’s previous credits include TIFF competition title ‘The Paperboy’, as well as TIFF 2009 Audience Award winner, ‘Precious’.  ‘Five Fingers for Marseilles’ was also made possible with the backing of South Africa’s National Film & Video Foundation and the Department of Trade and Industry, and with additional support from Dupa Films.

An Unforgettable Opera Journey With Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau In April With Semiramide And Così Fan Tutte

Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau strikes all the right chords this month with Semiramide, releasing 07 April 2018; and Così fan tutte, releasing 28 April 2018. Stay true to your opera fetish with an amazing Met Opera line-up at your nearest Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau theatre where you can witness opera come alive and ignite your vocals for a grand finale of The Met: Live in HD 2017-18 season in May 2018.

This masterpiece of dazzling vocal fireworks makes a rare Met appearance—its first in nearly 25 years—with Maurizio Benini on the podium. The all-star bel canto cast features Angela Meade in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon, who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace, a trouser role sung by Elizabeth DeShong. Javier Camarena, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Ryan Speedo Green complete the stellar cast. Semiramide is the culmination of the Italian phase of Rossini’s monumental yet unusual career. He had already produced such immortal comedies as Il Barbiere di Siviglia and L’Italiana in Algeri, but in the early 19th century he was celebrated above all else for his tragedies—none more so than Semiramide. For decades after its premiere, the opera swept through the music capitals of Europe and beyond, enthralling audiences with its urgent, transcendentally beautiful use of melody; undeniably exhilarating drama; and, most importantly, astonishing vocal displays.

Screening date: 07 April 2018.

Così fan tutte

A collaboration with Improbable, is a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera and English National Opera. A winning cast comes together for Phelim McDermott’s clever vision of Mozart’s comedy about the sexes, set in a carnival-esque, funhouse environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island—complete with bearded ladies, fire eaters, and a Ferris wheel. Manipulating the action are the Don Alfonso of Christopher Maltman and the Despina of Tony Award–winner Kelli O’Hara, with Amanda Majeski, Serena Malfi, Ben Bliss, and Adam Plachetka as the pairs of young lovers who test each other’s faithfulness. Every possible impression of love—from the loftiest to the basest—is explored in this extraordinary opera. David Robertson conducts.

Screening date: 28 April 2018

All films will show at Cinema Nouveau and select Ster-Kinekor sites: Rosebank Nouveau, Gateway Commercial, Brooklyn Nouveau and V&A Waterfront Nouveau. At Somerset and Blue Route Mall in Cape Town, Bedford Square in Johannesburg and Garden Route Mall in George.

Winnie: In Her Own Words

“The leadership on Robin Island was… not subjected to the violence we were subjected to and if you have done that, if you were picking up the bodies of the children on June the 16th, 1976 – I can’t pretend I suddenly woke up the following day, prayed to God and I was this angel, and I forgave.  It was a battle, it was a process. It is still a process” – Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The late struggle icon and political activist Nomzamo Winifred Madikizela-Mandela tells her story, in her own words.

Producer: Mandy Jacobson

Car-T Cell Therapy

A South African family was devastated when their daughter was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.  Since her diagnosis three years ago, 6-year-old Mia Cara has undergone months of intense chemotherapy, lumber punches, gruelling bone marrow biopsies, intramuscular injections and countless days and nights in and out of hospital. But in a major medical breakthrough in genetics, US scientists have developed a specialized gene therapy treatment, which uses the body’s own immune system to treat Leukaemia in children. This treatment was recently approved by the FDA and hundreds of children have been successfully treated worldwide. After undergoing the Car-T cell treatment, Mia Cara is now officially in remission. Gnome Alone : Review

When Chloe (Becky G – Power Rangers) discovers that her new home’s garden gnomes are not what they seem, she must decide between the pursuit of a desired high school life and taking up the fight against the Troggs.

Gnome Alone stars the voice talents of Tara Strong (Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) as Catherine, Olivia Holt as Brittany, Jeff Dunham (Smurfs: The Lost Village, The Nut Job) as Quicksilver, and George Lopez (The Smurfs 2) as Zook.

The film is a fun romp, as we follow Chloe on her adventure against the slightly cute and slightly angry invaders. With creative animation, and vibrant colours that dance about the screen, there is no shortage of visual feast.

As for the story, the plot is pretty straight forward, to keep younger viewers interested, yet has enough to appeal to older audiences too. While the “good guys” are their usual near spotless selves, one does feel a bit for the “bad guys” as the Troggs do feel just a bit misunderstood. However, that misunderstanding does not mean they are scary or creepy, with this meaning kids are likely to prefer them to the human or gnome characters.

Gnome Alone is a fun, animated escape, with some laughs, and a delight for children.

Gnome Alone opens 2 March 2018 in South African cinemas.

End Of The DWTSSA Journey For Former Miss SA Liesl Laurie

Radio host and former beauty queen Liesl Laurie and her dance partner, three-time British Show Dance champion Ryan Hammond, had to bid Dancing With The Stars SA farewell tonight [1 April] after three out of the four judges opted to save netball champ Vanes-Mari du Toit in her third Dance-Off.

Bryan Watson remarked on what a difficult choice this was – “both ladies left their hearts on the floor”, he noted. “But on this occasion I will save Liesl and Ryan,” he reluctantly concluded. Debbie agreed that both ladies had implemented the judges’ comments from tonight’s show in their Dance-Off performances, and she elected to keep Vanes-Mari and Johannes.

Judge Tebogo also decided to save Vanes-Mari, and that left the deciding vote to head judge Jason Gilkison, who declared that for him, Vanes-Mari had given the “more committed and more positive performance” in the Dance-Off.

The former Miss SA and radio host Liesl opened her run on Dancing With The Stars SA with the very first dance of the season, a Cha-Cha-Chá, in Week 1, and judge Debbie Turner predicted then that as her confidence grew over the weeks, Liesl would be “stunning”.

In the two months since then, Debbie’s prediction turned out to be true.

Despite having to perform with a back injury in Week 3, Liesl powered through the pain and bounced back the following week with a scintillating Quickstep, after which Bryan Watson thought that she “lit up the floor”.

The judges had some issues with Liesl’s Week 5 Salsa, with head judge Jason cautioning her to try to have the same amazing communication with her partner as she had with the camera, but they were all blown away by her passionate headbanging Rock-inspired Paso Doble in Week 6. “Now we see a completely different side of you! I really, really enjoyed it,” Debbie commented then.

In Week 7 Debbie was equally impressed with Liesl’s American Smooth, complimenting the way that she managed to communicate energy through the tips of her fingers, and last week she commented on the musicality of Liesl’s Salsa. But unfortunately this week Debbie didn’t think that Liesl sufficiently portrayed the characterisation behind the song to which she and Ryan performed the Foxtrot, Beyoncé’s “Listen”, and Jason agreed. “You’ve got to do the dancing from the inside,” he chided Liesl, reducing her to tears.

“There’s been a lot of tears, but I did warn everyone in the beginning that there would be!” Liesl smiled tonight after the result was announced. “I don’t leave this competition with any losses,” she said graciously. “Maybe the loss of my beautiful toes!” she joked.

The vote count and ranking of contestants is done according to the international format rules and was independently computed by Deloitte and Touche and confirmed against the vote results determined by M-Net.

Next week, 8 April, these 5 couples remaining in the competition will each perform two numbers:

  • Screen and stage personality Frank Opperman and his partner, Jeanné Swart,
  • Television actress Zola Nombona and her partner, Tebogo Mashilo,
  • Actor and model Eden Classens and his partner, Ash-Leigh Hunter,
  • Protea netball goal shooter Vanes-Mari du Toit and her partner, Johannes Radebe,
  • Singer and songwriter Connell Cruise and his partner, Marcella Solimeo.

Viewers have to register at to participate in the live Dancing With The Stars SA voting. Voting registration opened again at 20:30 tonight and will close at 16:30 on Sunday, 8 April, ahead of the next live episode. Viewers only need to register once to be able to vote in every episode of the season.
