Luisa Miller (Verdi)

Showing for the first time in HD, Italian opera music composer Giuseppe Verdi’s Luisa Miller isn’t just a classic tale of lovers torn apart. It explores Walter Miller’s (Tenor Plácido Domingo) love for his daughter Luisa Miller (Soprano, Sonya Yoncheva) and the lengths he will go to protect his child and how a daughter will go to the ends of the earth to save her father. The opera set flits between a humble, village house and a palace. When Luisa falls in love with Rodolfo, the son of local lord, Count Walter, plenty of conspiracy, deception and tragedy is thrown into the mix to satisfy drama-lovers. Conductor Bertrand de Billy hits every note perfectly, with a musical pulse that both syncs with, and adds depth to the emotive narrative.

Screening date: 12 May 2018.

ESTIMATED RUN TIME: 3 HOURS 28 MINUTES WITH TWO INTERMISSIONS

Cendrillon (Massenet)

Cendrillon (Cinderella) is a ‘fairy tale’ opera performed in four acts by French composer Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Henri Caïn. It is based on French author Charles Perrault’s 1698 version of Cinderella, one of the most popular, modern-day fairy-tales. Cendrillon is ill-treated by her step-mother and step-sisters, but thanks to her Fairy God Mother (Kathleen Kim) she attends a Gala Ball where Prince Charming (mezzo-soprano Alice Coote) is ordered to find a wife. Coote plays the prince in a breeches role, dressed in male clothing. Cendrillon attends the ball and leaves a glass slipper behind in a race against the clock. The Prince seeks out woman, who enchanted him at the Ball and an emotional rollercoaster ensues.

Conductor Bertrand de Billy perfectly executes music that captures the melancholy of the prince

and Cendrillon as they pine for each other. Prepared to be surprised because the opera takes some twists and turns that gives a different perspective on the classic fairytale.
