Idols SA Gets A Dose Of Dr Malinga At The Pretoria Auditions

Flying high kicks, blaring airhorns, rules by the book and the spirit of Musa characterised an eventful audition round at the State Theatre in Pretoria.

Guest judge, Dr Malinga, turned out to be the perfect catalyst for the crowd that lined the pavements around the audition venue. The high-kick sensation’s energy brought out abo majaivane as the hopefuls set aside singing nerves and got down to some beats while waiting for their turn in front of the judges.

As a first timer behind the judges’ table, Randall had some advice for the music doctor. “We are looking for four things – a good voice, looks that can be developed into a brand, stage presence, and hunger. The person needs to have passion,” he said.

Passion certainly came in spades from the wanna-be Idols. A contestant who described herself as having a “man voice” was not fazed by the competition because “this is Idols of miracles”. Pity she didn’t receive her miracle on the day.

The winning spirit of Season 9 Idol, Musa, was strong as his neighbour from Witbank got the first Golden Ticket of the day; shortly followed by a singer who had performed as part of his backing choir when he took the title. There was definitely Musa Magic in the air.

A group of five returnees received a lifeline as they auditioned at the same time. They each got their Golden Tickets in one fell swoop and left the audition room amid tears of joy. Those who were an ear-sore received Randall’s airhorn as a firm no, prompting host and co-executive producer Proverb to consult with the rule book on just how many times the judge could press that horn.

The Telkom Pop Up Audition bus stopped in Port Elizabeth to unearth some gems and handed over three tickets. All in all, 24 contestants will be joining others at Theatre Week when the audition phase is over.

Next week marks the last leg of the tour when Joburg people get their turn.
