Mzansi Finally Gets The Top 16 Singers Who Will Battle It Out For Your Votes | Idols

It’s finally here! After four provincial tours, three satellite stops, and almost 10 000 hopefuls, we reveal your Idols SA Season 14’s Top 16!

Thato Makape (23) – He must surely hold the record for the for the longest traveller to an Idols audition! Thato journeyed for a staggering 1250km from his hometown of Postmasburg in the Northern Cape to Cape Town. The young barber’s resolve was not in vain – he received his Golden Ticket from three of the judges and is now determined to go all the way for his mother, who is a cancer survivor.

Yanga Sobetwa (16) – Talk about a girl with a plan! Season 14’s youngest contestant stepped into the Cape Town audition room with the single-minded purpose of leaving with a Golden Ticket. Not only did she succeed in scooping a yes from all four judges, she had already arranged for long-distance studies with her school. Now that’s what we call levels!

Lincoln Lewis (22) – When a judge tells you that you’ve given them the best audition of the season so far, you know you are on to a good thing. The young man from Ravensmead on the Cape Flats has fought to get to this point and is not about to back out now.

Mthokozisi Nqcobo (20) – The UCT student from Umlazi in Durban loves music so much that he suffered from depression when he opted to study accounting over music for financial reasons. But the same music is his “healer” and helping him find his feet again. Receiving a unanimous yes from the judges has rightfully validated his passion.

Niyaaz Arendse (22) – The Ottery, Cape Town, homeboy is determined to connect with Randall, who has not been taken with him, especially as this is his fourth try on the show. He won’t give up on his dream because he is convinced that music is his life.

Nosipho Silinda (17) – This teenager from Ladysmith in KZN is all about the creative industry; she wants to build a school for the arts in future. For now, she must get through juggling Idols and her Grade 11 studies…oh, and work on her emotions like Somizi suggested.

Sandile Skosana (26) – Representing Tsakane in Ekurhuleni, Sandile knows the meaning of hard work. He’s already attempted a Masters, is a research scientist and is doing his post graduate certificate in Education. He is also the music director at his church and believes this is the right time for him on Idols.

Ntokozo Makhathini (18) – There must be something in the air in Witbank! Ntokozo comes from the same neighbourhood as previous winner Musa, and bowled over the judges during auditions, resulting in four yeses. She’s passionate about nature and tourism, but for now is taking a gap year to concentrate on Idols.

Mnqobi Dlamini (21) – He came all the way from Piet Retief in Mpumalanga to audition in Pretoria. A returnee who got his Golden Ticket during the “mass returnee audition”, his life is about gigs and trying to provide for his family.

Delene Swartz (21) – Unathi called her one of her favourites and couldn’t get enough of her voice. As a vocalist for a working band, it was no surprise when Somizi complimented her on being well prepared and “blessing” them with her voice. She comes from Ennerdale in Jozi.

Basimane Boys Melato aka King B (20) – Big in voice and big in personality, King B’s vosho is sure to become his trademark. The HR student from Kagiso says he is inspired by Miss Universe and is here to soar.

Thando Mngomezulu (19) – She epitomises the saying “dynamite comes in small packages”. However, her crippling lack of confidence has been a talking point among the judges from audition all the way to Top 16. The Media Studies student says she’s always wanted to be in the music business.

Lethabo Ramatsui aka Wattahmelon (18) – Hailing from Attridgeville in Pretoria, the sassy theatre student says she’s obsessed with fruits and loves watermelon especially. She attends the YIT Academy at the State Theatre, where she trains in drama, music and dance.

Zamagambu Memela aka Xae (18) – The Pinetown, Durban, teen is the first in the history of Idols to get a Golden Ticket autographed – by all the judges. And no, it doesn’t mean anything, but it’s still nice. She says winning Idols would make her dreams come true.

Victor Matalane (25) – Originally from River Cross, Limpopo, he auditioned in Johannesburg and was saved by Unathi during Theatre Week. He is a praise and worship singer.

Bongiwe Pearl Mdaka (23) – A boutique sales lady from Melelani in Mpumalanga, Bongiwe once had twelve fingers before she had the extras surgically removed. She prides herself on playing guitar well.

At the DSTV Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards (DMVCA) launch event held at Summer Place in Hyde Park, the Gqom sensation, Destruction Boyz, and their smash hit, Omunye the dynamic Durban duo commanded the spotlight. They also lead the nominees list with an impressive three nods; for Song of the Year, Favourite Rising Star and Favourite Music Artist/Group. It looks like they were right on the money when naming their breakout album Gqom is the Future!

Nipping close at the heels with two nominations each are Prince Kaybee and Kagiso Rabada. The house music master and Proteas fast bowler have been making waves and raking in the silverware respectively – most definitely #livingourbestlife in 2018!

Sci-fi Procedural ‘Reverie’ Now On Showmax

Reverie, a new sci-fi procedural, is now available to binge, first on Showmax in Africa.

The series is named after a customisable and immersive virtual reality experience that scans users’ memories and social media footprints to help them bring their dreams to life.

REVERIE — Pilot — Pictured: (l-r) Sarah Shahi as Mara Kint, Dennis Haysbert as Charlie Ventana — (Photo by: Sergei Bachlakov/NBC)

“It’s so real that when you go in, it’s hard to distinguish it from real life,” says actress Jessica Lu (Awkward, American Horror Story), who plays the tech genius behind Onira-Tech and its ground-breaking technology. “The problem is, for some people, their Reverie is better than their real life, so they choose to stay.”

Enter Mara Kint (Sarah Shahi from The L Word and Person of Interest), a failed hostage negotiator, who’s brought in to save people from themselves.

“It’s almost like Inception meets Alice in Wonderland,” says Shahi, although media have also compared it to a more mainstream version of Black Mirror and Forbes described it “The Matrix meets cop show.”

Golden Globe nominee Dennis Haysbert (President David Palmer on 24 and Nelson Mandela in Goodbye Bafana) co-stars as Charlie Ventana, Onira-Tech’s head of security, while Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes) is an expert in dreams and Kathryn Morris (Cold Case) is a venture capitalist.

Indiewire called Reverie “a dazzling and poignant summer diversion,” praising the “gorgeous… brisk and arresting pilot” with its “imaginative take on various mental and psychological playgrounds,” “vibrant visuals and lush virtual landscapes,” and “hints of unexpected side effects and bugs.”

The Verge called it “refreshingly idealistic… fresh and timely,” while Slash Film said “the story is interesting, the acting is great, and the premise remains intriguing.”

Reverie is created and executive produced by Mickey Fisher, who worked with Steven Spielberg to create Extant and with Guillermo del Toro as a writer on The Strain. Directors include Daisy von Scherler Mayer (The Walking Dead), Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows), John F Showalter (The 100), Kenneth Fink (The Expanse), P.J. Peske (Supernatural) and Wendey Stanzler (Arrow).

HBO’s Hit Series ‘Succession’ Now Streaming On Showmax

“This is the thing about being rich: it’s f*ing great,” says Matthew McFadyen in HBO’s latest hit, Succession, a show that suggests just the opposite in its skewering of the Roy family, one of the biggest media and entertainment conglomerates in the world.

McFadyen, in a slimy, sycophantic role miles away from Mr Darcy in Pride & Prejudice, is joined by a stellar cast that includes Emmy-winner Brian Cox (War & Peace) as the aging patriarch; Hiam Abbass (Blade Runner 2049) as his third wife; and Golden Globe nominee Kieran Culkin (Igby Goes Down), Jeremy Strong (The Big Short), Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and Sarah Snook (Steve Jobs) as the children in the line of succession now that their father is starting to step back from the company. If you think the Lannisters are bad, meet the Roys…

Streaming exclusively on Showmax, Succession is currently at number 32 on IMDB’s Most Popular TV chart, has an 82% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and has been hailed as everything from “my favourite show of the summer… the only thing I’ve been able to think about” by Vox to “King Lear for the modern media age” by The Telegraph.

Appropriately for a show about the 1% of the 1%, Succession’s credits boast an embarrassment of riches. Creator Jesse Armstrong was nominated for an Oscar for In The Loop and a Writers Guild of America award for his work on Veep and won a BAFTA for Peep Show and a Writers Guild of Great Britain Award for The Thick Of It.  Adam McKay, who directs Succession’s first episode and doubles as executive producer, won the Oscar for The Big Short and topped the box office with Talladega Nights, with Will Ferrell, who is also an executive producer here.

And then there’s Emmy-winning Veep writers Tony Roche and George Pritchett; Emmy-nominee Mark Mylod (Game of Thrones) as a director and executive producer; Oscar-nominated composer Nicholas Britell (Moonlight); Emmy-winning editor Ken Eluto (30 Rock) and Art Directors Guild-winning production designer Stephen H. Carter (Birdman), among many others…

As you’d guess from those credits, there’s a tension in Succession between its comedy and its drama. Vulture pitched it as, “Having Veep withdrawals? Try Succession… another HBO comedy that also combines whip-smart dialogue, a killer ensemble cast, and a cynical look at the intersection of politics, corporate business, and mass media.”

But Succession doesn’t sit as comfortably within the comedy genre as Veep does. Rather, as Slate pointed out, “It’s a comedy and then it’s a tragedy, in the same show, but not at the same time… The show’s ethos: to gut you while you’re laughing.”

Similarly The Guardian warns, “The writing is savage, the dialogue sharp and foul-mouthed. Although funny in places, it is also scary, as any drama peopled by monsters ought to be.”

Not that Succession fits neatly into the drama genre either. “The show is a lot more fun than it might look,” says Vox, praising the way it “expertly strikes a balance between humour and heartbreak.”

The genre-bending result is one of the most acclaimed series of the year. As The Hollywood Reporter says, “Succession is spectacular… sharp, cutting, wonderfully acted… Each new episode is more darkly funny than the one before.”

Or as Slate says, “It’s amazing…  Electric, funny, fun, and occasionally, tragic…  You should be watching it.”

In November, Forbes reported that a study had found that America’s three richest individuals – Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Jeff Bezos – collectively have more wealth than the bottom 50% of the population there – 160 million people in 63 million households.

Succession is a voyeuristic glimpse into a family with that level of wealth – where kids are offered a million dollars to hit a home run, where destination weddings are held in picturesque castles. But their family life is not as f*ing great as McFadyen’s character dreams it to be. Rather, as The Guardian says, “Above all, Succession is reassuring, in that it seems to argue that wealth and power offer no respite from the obligation to live one’s life in mortal fear… The next time you are annoyed by the arrogance of some ageing media mogul, try imagining him in the middle of the night, confused and alone, pissing all over an expensive carpet. I find it helps.”

Binge now, only on Showmax in Africa.

Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences And The Linux Foundation Launch The Academy Software Foundation

Founding members include Animal Logic, Autodesk, Blue Sky Studios, Cisco, DNEG, DreamWorks Animation, Epic Games, Foundry, Google Cloud, Intel, SideFX, The Walt Disney Studios, and Weta Digital

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and The Linux Foundation today launched the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) to provide a neutral forum for open source software developers in the motion picture and broader media industries to share resources and collaborate on technologies for image creation, visual effects, animation and sound.

“We are thrilled to partner with The Linux Foundation for this vital initiative that fosters more innovation, more collaboration, more creativity among artists and engineers in our community,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “The Academy Software Foundation is core to the mission of our Academy: promoting the arts and sciences of motion pictures.”

“Open Source Software has enabled developers and engineers to create the amazing visual effects and animation that we see every day in the movies, on television and in video games,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of The Linux Foundation. “With the Academy Software Foundation, we are providing a home for this community of open source developers to collaborate and drive the next wave of innovation across the motion picture and broader media industries.”

The ASWF is the result of a two-year investigation by the Academy’s Science and Technology Council into the use of Open Source Software (OSS) across the motion picture industry. The survey found that more than 80% of the industry uses open source software, particularly for animation and visual effects. However, this widespread use of OSS has also created challenges including siloed development, managing multiple versions of OSS libraries (“versionitis”) and varying governance and licensing models that need to be addressed in order to ensure a healthy open source ecosystem.

“Developers and engineers across the industry are constantly working to find new ways to bring images to life, and open source enables them to start with a solid foundation while focusing on solving unique, creative challenges rather than reinventing the wheel,” said Rob Bredow, SVP, Executive Creative Director and Head of Industrial Light & Magic and Member of the Academy’s Science and Technology Council, Open Source Investigation Committee. “We are very excited to launch the Academy Software Foundation and provide a home for open source developers to collaborate, regardless of where they work, and share best practices which we believe will drive innovation across the industry.”

ASWF Mission: The mission of the ASWF is to increase the quality and quantity of open source contributions by developing a governance model, legal framework and community infrastructure that lowers the barrier to entry for developing and using open source software. Developers interested in learning more or contributing can sign up to join the mailing list at

The ASWF Goals are to:

  • Provide a neutral forum to coordinate cross-project efforts, establish best practices and share resources across the motion picture and broader media industries.
  • Develop an open continuous integration (CI) and build infrastructure to enable reference builds from the community and alleviate issues caused by siloed development.
  • Provide individuals and organizations with a clear path for participation and code contribution.
  • Streamline development for build and runtime environments through the sharing of open source build configurations, scripts and recipes.
  • Provide better, more consistent licensing through a shared licensing template.

“In the last 25 years, software engineers have played an increasing role in the most successful movies of our time,” said David Morin, Project Lead for the Academy Open Source Investigation. “The Academy Software Foundation is set to provide funding, structure and infrastructure for the open source community, so that engineers can continue to collaborate and accelerate software development for moviemaking and other media for the next 25 years.”

For more information about the Academy Software Foundation, visit

The ASWF will have a significant presence at SIGGRAPH 2018. Interested developers and engineers can learn more about the ASWF by attending the keynote session on Monday, August 13, from 2:00 – 3:15 pm PT by Rob Bredow, SVP, Executive Creative Director and Head of ILM, or following the keynote livestream on YouTube or Facebook.

Conference attendees are also invited to participate in the Academy Software Foundation Birds of a Feather (BoF) session on Tuesday, August 14, from 9:00 – 10:00 am PT in the Vancouver Convention Centre, East Building, Room 11.
