Tough Economy

Hard hit by an increase in Vat, multiple fuel hikes and the soaring cost of basics like electricity, food and public transport, South African consumers have had their buying power slashed by 30%. Carte Blanche examines the knock-on effects of the core increases paired with a poor growth outlook and uncertain policy futures around land and health. With more increases looming, what fat can be trimmed to survive these tough times?

Durban’s Homeless Shelters

Over 4000 homeless people in Durban rely on the Ethekwini Municipality to provide them with meals and a safe shelter for the night. But often these shelters are far from a place of safety. Carte Blanche goes deep undercover into some of the dismal shelters to expose how the homeless and vulnerable are exploited, abused and forced to live in filthy conditions.

In The Hot Seat: Christo Wiese

For years, analysts, banks and ratings agencies promoted global retailer Steinhoff as a sound investment. With 40 brands under its belt and operating in over 30 territories, the retail giant was one of the top performers on world markets, that is, until the House of Cards came tumbling down. Billionaire businessman and former chairman of the company Christo Wiese is suing Steinhoff for R59 billion, but was he really unaware of the accounting fraud and financial irregularities happening right under his nose? Carte Blanche puts Wiese in the hot seat.

Transorbital Surgery

Brain surgery is one of the most common operations for tumours, where skilled surgeons have to cut bone from the skull to be able to operate.  It’s a complex and dangerous surgery with long recovery periods and high risk of complications. Now a team of South African surgeons have developed a surgical technique that’s changing lives. Through the eye sockets and nostrils to some parts of the brain – that’s how specialists are now performing these complex surgeries. Carte Blanche explores this remarkable innovation.
