Idols SA: Play Time Is Over As Theatre Week Kicks Off

The time has come to separate the pretenders from the real makoyas!

The brilliant – if slightly brutal – beginning to Idols SA Season 14 Theatre Week marked the end of playtime and the beginning of real work for those aiming to make it to the Top 16.

“My fellow judges were extremely generous in rewarding potential during the auditions. Now it’s time for them [contestants] to show why they are here,” said Randall.

Unathi said she was looking forward to an “interesting” week because of the diversity of the group, with Somizi sharing the same sentiment.

While 95 contestants made their way to the picturesque Wild Coast Sun in Port Edward, only the best and most consistent 16 will live to tell the tale at the end of the week. But first, the excited group had to get through the reality of Day 1, with its Chorus Line stage.

Within hours of exiting the Idols Bus at the resort, the aspirant singers found themselves with just a microphone and a vast stage separating them from the glare of the judges as they flexed their vocal muscles during the Chorus Line stage. They were then divided into three groups of different coloured chairs, with none knowing what each colour represents.

After an intense afternoon of singing and waiting, the judges finally delivered their verdict: 47 hopefuls were to pick up their bags at the door and head straight back to the airport. The rest were divided into groups of four, with a captain tasked with picking their Group Stage song.

The thrill of a foursome soon gave way to dismay and anxiety when the judges threw a spanner in the works – the group of four had to break up into two duos and do a sing-off. Queue meltdown.

“The aim is to see if they can cope under pressure. Pressure is the name of the game,” said Unathi.

In the end, after a highly emotional night and day of rehearsals and performances, only 31 made it to see Day 3.

Now for the Solo round and finally, the unveiling of the Top 16.
