Coalition Politics: How to Steal a Metro
After numerous failed attempts, this week coalition partners in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality finally succeeded in a no-confidence vote, to push out Democratic Alliance mayor Athol Trollip. Now as one coalition falls apart in a major metro, analysts believe that the DA led political partnerships in the Johannesburg and Tshwane municipalities in Gauteng, are also under threat. Carte Blanche asks: Is this the beginning of the end for coalition governments in South Africa?

Baboon Killings in the Vineyards
Raiding baboons are terrorising farmers on the hills above the peri-urban Constantia wine farms in the Western Cape. Addicted to sugar and used to getting easy access to farmsteads with fruit trees and vegetable patches, over 200 baboons pose a threat to residents and domestic animals. To the public’s outrage, two wine farms obtained permits to kill two baboons a day for a year. Carte Blanche investigates what it takes to manage the baboon-human conflict.

Henri van Breda: Axe Murderer
It was a crime that shook South Africa. In 2015, then, 20-year-old Henri van Breda took an axe and brutally killed his parents and brother, and seriously injured his younger sister in a luxury golf estate in Stellenbosch. After a lengthy trial Van Breda was found guilty of three counts of murder and attempted murder and was denied leave to appeal. Now the convicted murderer is looking to the Supreme Court of Appeal to overturn this decision. Carte Blanche speaks to Van Breda’s uncle about the devastating tragedy.

Lewis Pugh
Lewis Pugh is known as one of the top extreme swimmers in the world and he’s conquered almost every endurance swim one can imagine. Now Pugh has taken on a new challenge – to swim the entire length of the English Channel. It’s a punishing 560 km swim from the United Kingdom’s Land’s End, all the way to Dover. Battling harsh weather conditions and icy waters, Pugh hopes this swim will bring attention to his campaign to fully protect a third of the world’s oceans by 2030.
