4DX Wins ‘Most Innovative Technology’ Award

Nu Metro’s multi-sensory cinemas lead the way

Nu Metro Cinemas continues to lead the way with revolutionary cinema experiences, which was affirmed by the announcement that its multi-sensory 4DX cinema-format has received the international “Innovative Technology of the Year” award at Big Cine Expo 2018.

The rapid expansion of 4DX in South Africa over the past two years, located exclusively at Nu Metro cinemas, is in tandem with the continued growth of this next-generation cinema format into one of the most innovative, successful and award-winning technologies, paving the way for the future of the industry.

“Nu Metro is proud to be a part of the global 4DX community. This accolade further substantiates the great success we’ve seen with this ground-breaking technology at our own cinemas. South Africa has embraced it with open arms – demonstrated by various 4DX hits over the past few years, as well as the record-breaking box office results for THE NUN in 4DX this past weekend – literally making movie fans a part of the onscreen action in-cinema. This Friday sees the release of THE PREDATOR in 4DX, followed by a special pre-release engagement for THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS (exclusively in Nu Metro 4DX). 4DX is proof that cinemagoers are looking for fresh new, innovative, all-immersive cinema experiences and we are pleased to give them exactly that,” says Gary Craul, Nu Metro’s newly-appointed Marketing & Content Executive.

Through the first seven months of this year, more than 15 million people worldwide experienced the motion seats and environmental effects such as water, wind, fog, bubbles, lightning and scents that accompany and enliven the on-screen storytelling of the world’s biggest blockbusters in 4DX.

The “Innovative Technology of the Year” award is presented annually at the Big Cine Expo to honour the technical excellence of professionals in cinema exhibition industry around the globe and to applaud the innovative technologies that have successfully carved a space in this highly competitive industry.

CJ 4DPLEX (, the world’s first and largest 4D cinema company, and creator of 4DX, received the award. “We are honoured to be recognized for our achievements bringing innovative technology to cinemas around the world,” said CJ 4DPLEX CEO Byung-Hwan Choi. “Our success is a result of hard work by a growing team, and most importantly, our strong partnerships at the studios and within the exhibition community internationally. We look forward to continuing to work together with our friends in the industry to bring even more new innovation to the movies.”
