The Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards take place tomorrow evening at the Johannesburg World Trade Centre (known as The Venue Greenpark). The event will also see the winners of the newspaper categories, the Frewin, McCall and, Joel Mervis Awards announced.
All the winners received R15 000, a trophy and a certificate while all finalists received certificates. Commendation Certificates are awarded at the judges’ discretion.
This year’s theme, The truth Reloaded, aimed to draw attention to the challenging environment journalists are having to operate in. The theme states: “Journalists have to reload the truth at every turn, building trust, loyalty and community.”
2018 Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards Judging Panel Convener Judge, Mathatha Tsedu says: “Journalism is an important part of the democratic process of any country. It is the means through which individuals, communities and societies as a whole converse about the issues around them that affect them.”
The 2018 judging panel included Dinesh Balliah, Gus Silber, Latiefa Mobara, Mike Siluma, Tyrone August, Phil Mthimkhulu, Pippa Green, Mary Papayya, Neo Ntsoma, Lizeka Mda, Ryland Fisher, Thabo Leshilo, and Liesel Louw- Vaudram.
